Call me crazy, I liked putting a hot rails in the bridge so I could play metallica, megadeth, old VH covers and not only get a decent tone but not have 90db of annoying hum and buzz. :)

Now, crazy would be having someone take a woodworking tool to the bridge pickup cavity!

Pete

You're crazy too! :D

Yep! I do love my EJ strat though, it's the best sounding strat I've owned. Those guitars are great value for the money, especially used.

putting hot humbuckers on a strat like that is positively sinful IMO...but to each is own, what ever floats your boat.!
I met Eric Johnson and shook his hand, his hands are very large. There's a chord on his first instructional video that's impossible to fret.
I had the same the experience meeting Eric..his hands/fingers are very long. by the way, i think cut and paste a quote that i didn't write. : ) me and humbuckers don't go well.

Couldn't resist. Got an Eric Johnson Strat locally (used). Really liking it as far as playability, but man, I'm definately not a single coil guy. So, I was thinking before I even bought it (tell me if I'm crazy here), that I'm going to have a local, very well respected luthier route it out for a humbucker in the bridge. Some might think I'm crazy doing this to such a nice guitar, but I figure it will really kick some arse when I get it some beef.

So, I'm I crazy?
those pickup on that axe are gonna sound bright unless u do what he does which is roll off on the tone knob towards the bridge pickup, which darkens the tone however decreases the output.
I just tryed rolling back the tone pot on the bridge and WOW!! What a difference! These tone pots are very different from what I'm used (never using them   ). I turned it down about 3/4 of the way and it sounds great now! Very cool, thanks for mentioning it!

awesome dude! I have all my strats wired that way..........shhhhhhhhh don't tell.

I love the neck. It's what sold me on the guitar. Soft V into a C shape around the 12th fret.

by the way, I know u have the Camerons and I'll tell u that when I was at Mark's shop I played my old strat with hs-3 in the bridge and Mark flipped, and ended up playing my guitar for a good half hour because it still sounded PAF'ish and thick on that amp. It was actually super fun and easy to play with all that crunch going on.

That looks like a perfect Stratocaster man. Like somebody pointed out, why not just put together another pickguard with pickups and electronics and swap it with the original. Try single-coil size humbuckers.

cool guitar jb, i think you will like the hot rail in the bridge, i had a custom shop 60's strat and i loved the neck and middle single coil tones but the bridge didnt work for my style and i changed it to a hot rail and it sounded nice for metal.

I'd try something like a JB Jr. or Duncan Hot Rail first. Both of those pickups sound great IMO.

+1

There are a lot of SC sized HB's that you might be happy with.

Looks nice JB! A guy at my work had a EJ Strat and I liked how it played a lot. In my opinion, you would like a Hot Rails bridge pickup. I had one in a old Charvel Model 7 Tele that I had years ago and it screamed! You can get GREAT harmonics and a nice growl out of that PU. Don't hack up the EJ strat for a humbucker.

Congrats on the new guitar!!

If anything, take the neck off and put it on a vintage spec body thats already routed for humbuckers. That would be sweet.

Blasphemy. All of you.

What you gots in your bridge on your strat?

Yeah I thought so bitch
I didnt route out the bridge pickup cavity of my guitar thus destroying all resale value. Its also not an Eric Johnson body with a thin nitro finish, nor did it have the EJ pickups in it. :D

Even I posted not to route that guitar and you know where I stand with modding guitars

First strat....well what do ya know. You should know that trembucker / humbuker / single coils all sound different of a given model. The normal size humbucker well not cover all the strings on a fender. I would go with one of the Jr. /stacked what ever. More so than this leave it the way it is for a few weeks or months that sound may grow on you. At first going to single, when your into humbuckers it seems very different. But there are advantages to the single coils.

J-man! :)

Di marzio :D

Jason!

Try a Dimarzio HS-3 or give Seymour Duncan a call and get him to wind you a Mojo Stack singlecoil (Doug's singlecoil in his 68 strat.).

I love the tone of a strat with a fat singlecoil in the neck and bridge position.. so much so i may end up buying a 69 Reissue strat if i dont get my gas under control soon :D

I'm keeping it stock right now. I just needed to turn the tone knob down. It's very aggressive for a single coil IMO. But we'll see what happens. :scared:

Cool, aslong as your getting a tone you like its all good man!!!

I'm quickly finding that I'm not a Strat guy. It's not just the tone...and it's not the neck. It's strange, it's like it's the scale length or something. I don't see myself keeping it. FUCK ME!!

Seriously... go try out a YJM or 69RI Custom shop strat. I like those two models way more than the EJ strat!

Also.. big headstocks are cooler :D
