Dave's amps are over priced for what you get. I would take a Splawn first!
Tried a Splawn once..sounded like a piece of cardboard..dull..lame..stale..fizzy can of bees

Had to be either something wrong with the amp of or the player. In the right hands they sound just killer. But it's a diffrent tone than the BE for sure. More classic Marshal for sure Everyone chases the Under lock and key tone and I think the Splawn nails it perfectly. Just check out some of VRAD's clips. To me he nails the lynch tone.

To me I think many people don't explore the capabilities of the Splawn. It isn't really fluid without a boost and is very articulate. So, people who are expecting it to be saturated and easy to play are disapointed. To me, I like that in your face type tone. I like the rythms with less gain to give you the in your face tone. Then just hit it with a boost to smooth it out for your solos.

I also don't like thick sounding amps.. i like to fight it a bit for the rythms. Lead tone you do have to work a bit more but you can use OD pedals that compress slightly like the BB preamp to get that feel back for your leads. Seems to me the Friedman stuff is very thick in the midrange. Is this a correct assessment? I only have his modded Brahma MTS module which i really dig but apparently the judge was designed by him and loosely based on the BE and to me, it could use a bit more cut.

I think Vrad's style is a big part of that and I can hear it on all his amp clips Splawn or otherwise, I hear a consistency across them all and that's a compliment to his playing/style/technique.

I also think the older 3 pre QR's were closer to the Under Lock and Key tone than the newer stuff.

If my 4 pre QR was even remotely close to the Under Lock and Key tone I would have never sold it. It got closer with a boost though.

When I think thick mids, Bogner comes to mind....not Friedman. Friedman's have a great cutting mid IMO.

I played a Splawn and thought it was lifeless and stiff. I'd rather shell out the big cash for one of Dave's creations. But to each his own.

Same here. I think Scott is an awesome person and makes some cool amps but for my tastes I agree with this.

Still love my Metro build that Dave worked his BE, SAT, FAT, and simple clean magic on.

Thanks LPFreak on what was IMHO the best deal on the best sounding amp I've owned. My amp will go no where unless I have to pay medical bills to save one of my kids.

I still can't believe you got rid of the Avenger. The tone you got here is very impressive.

Yeah, I should have bought it.

You SLO guys like your amp with generic MArshall cabs? Curt's demo sounded awesome through that slant Randall 4 x 12 with V30's.

I'm almost positive I used a Splawn 4x12 straight with Small Block 25's for that video.

Thanks! It was mostly about the money and honestly needing to replenish some $$$ back into my savings! I'm farely content at this point with what I have left. I was contemplating the BE100 for a different tone and feel...but after talking to a couple very respected forum members, I don't think I would have been happy with it long term. I always go back to the SLO and it's just the amp for me!

I always go back to a plexi type amp, but man, I sure would like to have another SLO. There was an Avenger at the Austin GC for $1k. I looked at it longingly. :)

Last year I bought an Avenger 100 for 900 bucks here in Copenhagen. It had the old "truck grill" front plate... traded it for a VH4 and dropped some cash. It still was a "good" deal for me... for what the Diezel is worth. But man, do I regret getting rid of that Avenger. The VH4 is long gone cause I thought it sucked...

Longing so bad for that avenger.. it was sooo sweet sounding.

One thing i didnt like about it was that the gain know was useless passed 11 o clock.

Do I need to remind you of the Port City, Greg Howe debacle Carl? That pretty much would sum up your amp design and manufacturing capabilities.

Port City, Greg Howe debacle? What happened?

Going back through the clips, the SLO sounds thick yet also detailed on the top end. The BE-100 a little looser and organic sounding but i also hear the lower mid emphasis. I could go either way but on some BE demos i find myself wishing there was more cut so right now I'd lean towards the SLO. Can't afford either right now :)

Also interested in the Greg Howe Debacle... please share, this is Rig/Gossip talk after all!

A little off topic, but are you KIDDING ME!??? Why was the camera man filming the lights during EVH's solo in that video!??!??

Killer SLO tone!!

No joke...EVH sounded great through that SLO! It sounded really hot there, way more gain than we typically hear him use, but I think that some of it may have to do with the EMGs in that Steinberger.

Anyway, I think the BE-100 is going to yield a better clean sound by far than the SLO will, but I would be interested to know if the BE
cuts on the same level as the SLO.

Ooooh Thank You!
I was going to post a BIG Rant but I refrained
because I didn't think anyone would give a Shit.
I was Extremely annoyed as to why the Fuck Head
Camera Man would film the lights during a Rippin'
EVH Solo?! I forgot all about the Tone of the SLO
because of the Idiot filming it.

I hope it's someone on here that filmed it, so I
can tell them direct, what a Shlep they are!!! :gethim:
