Yeah, that SL2 is rediculous really. Don't know why I'm getting the EG5......well, I do know....ha ha.

Just downstairs rockin' the mod 50 and my amp class build amp (just popped some 6v6's in). Just plain rockin' amps. I know I keep going on about them, but honestly they just rock!

Heck I had the bassman channel B with the module master at 12:00 and overall master at 3:00 and wow, real plexi like but tight. Rockin' those power chords just kill.....tuned down to drop D and was kicking out the classic VH lick along with some Ratt and Rage against the Machine. Sweet Sweet Sweet..........

Yes, the BMan rocks! Great for old AC/DC, Rush, Led Zep, VH!

I like the MHG but it seems to lack some cut at times. Is that what you guys notice? Is the EG5 really bright? I hear Lynch references...so it is very 80s? I know Lynch used everything but I want thick modern out of this one....ala Bogner (Just more cut).

Don't think I'll buy the Rec but I want the SL2 and EG3/4!

How much to have the MHG moddded to EG5 and how much time????

I also see guys talking about cranking the master when using 6V6s. Is that a big benefit of those tubes? Do you lose low end and headroom?

Look at you rockin' the Ted Knight quotes... Awesome.

I was going to play a gig last night with the EG5 as my lead sound - but then I forgot that my time machine was out of batteries. Seriously, the EG5 is straight out of 1985 - or the year that rock guitar music jumped the shark. It is the sound of too much hairspray polluting the ozone layer, tight leather pants with big pocket combs, cowboy boots with pointy metal toes, Dokken, Ratt, Skid Row and Warrant. I have to go back to the MHG just to not want to poop myself with shame for having lived through that era.

I would use this EG5 if I was in a VH cover band as it seems to nail his tone up to the 1984 album - and really that was the last VH record worth anything.

Hey but if you like it...

The EG5 will cut like no other module. It is cool at bedroom levels, but unreal in a gigging situation. The MHG sounds thick and full at lower volumes and with no bass player or kick drum. Now move it into a band situation with bass and kick and you are trying to get it to cut so you turn the mid knob and it just gets nasal and doesnt fit in the mix.

Yes the EG5 can be extremely bright. That being said when at low volumes,( myself and Matt... (both Treble Nazi's) run treble at say 12. When you start to move air, say gigging levels, I am running it at 9 or 10 tops. Presence off. Use your ears not your eyes is my best recommendation. Remember, your speakers are cause more high end to be heard by our ears than bass as the volume increases! Its a matter of science. Matt will attest to what the EG5 did at his latest rehersal.

Modifiing your MHG to EG5 specs will take $75 bucks and with shipping time a week at most. Call the shop 248-541-9100 ask for Chris..my sister and she will take care of you!

I love what my 6v6's sound like..they are big at low volumes..I mean I run no density and bass never higher than 11 on all of my modules. I run my master on the amp all the time at 1 o clock and use the masters on the modules there after..its all a preference...remember use your ears not your eyes! Now I intregrated at set of el 34's and a set of 6v6's and got a great blend of mids and bottom...but not 6l6 bottom, which is to much to me. The nice thing about the 6v6's is in the MOD 50 you get 25 full power watts and about 4 on low...

anything else just fire away!

That is the beauty of our line..if you dont like it thats fine..but others do. We dont have to change our amp design. You just change the module you want! It is the first amp line to allow for you not to like the amp (module) but still love the amp!

Best amps ever - and a great company to deal with.

Thanks Jeff!!

Have you guys tested the EG5 with different tubes like Kt88 or EL34L?

what is the best Match i know Matt uses the 5881 .

so Jeff, would EG5 be the Shotgun Messiah/Loudness/hardline tone over the SL2?

Oh hell ya..heartbreak boulivard! I love it with my mix of el 34's and 6v6's...But 5881 are what we like to put with the amp to cover all the bases..meaning multiple modules that orginally had differnent power tubes.

The SL2 is woody and truly our and my go to module. It is what Bruce thinks a hot rodded Marshall should sound like. Now the EG5 is just high gain that cuts like a bitch and more of a 80's flavor to a hot rodded marshall.

Agreed about the awesomeness of these amps!

Richedie, I think the power section cranked up works with all the power tubes. I just whomped it up with my Ruby EL34's and was rockin' the house!! Master at 3:00 just kicks in another gear of "big sound".

Spak, your description of the EG5 is exactly why I'm getting one! Can't wait!

I didn't realize you could have integrated tubes. Interesting.

With the MHG I was looking for a more modern, high gain tone ala Bogner and Diezel, etc.
It sounds like the EG5 is quite different! I guess what I am wondering is if the EG5 can cover the same ground as the MHG only better.

I hear people say VH with this module but I get that with the BMan and even with the MHG with the right settings. I bet the SL and SL2 kill for VH.

Need to clarify...I have a MOD 100 so integration is possible..the MOD 50 needs a pair of like tubes..6v6's or el 34's. Sorry!

Well Superunknown likens it to his Diezel!

Likens it to a Diezel? Sounds good to me. I just would be afraid of missing something the has MHG if I had it modded. I'd almost just rather get the EG5 some day. Will the MHG be discontinued as if the EG5 is the new incarnation of the MHG?

One thing that comes to mind is the tone I heard when I let a local band use my Egnater(Bman/MHG) for their set. I sat out front and all around the club and the tone floored me. It was the thickest, fullest tone I had gotten out of any of my previous amps and it had no problem sitting in the mix to my ears. Even the guitarist playing it commented on it being the best tone he had ever had. That says a lot about the MOD 50. I also think it speaks about the MHG and the girth and fullness in the voicing.

Nope, no intention of discontinuing the MHG...lots of guys really like it and that is cool! I have both and they have there place with me as they should with you..The EG5 is just what I was hearing from my 80's days..and we hit is spot on!

Ordered my mod50 2day!!!!! I cant wait. I am retrning a slo 100 tommorow. Its just to one trick pony for me. This amp seems amazing and the versatility is perfect for my wanting a good pallette of tone. I oredered mine with vox/eg5 modules. What I'd like advice on is what should I match them with I aked Frank to put el34's in but I am not yet locked into it. I like the Slo 100 singing quality but I also LOVE Jerry Cantrells Man in The Box Grind...so some advice from my new Breathen would be greatly appreciated... as well as which cab to match it with...hmmm alot to ask I know but I am returning alot of gear tommorrow...for the record I have a Mesa Slant cab with celestian 60w vintage speakers...Again thanx to all.

Just so you all know - I sold Richedie his MOD50 - and he was a stand up cat to deal with.

I TOLD you that the MOD 50 kicked major ass. ;)

I jst sent Jeff back the EG5 module that came with my MOD100 Head to trade for a MHG - which I previously sold to Richedie.

To sum it up for ya - here is how I think of the differences in practical terms - there is a lot of "overlap" in these modules but these are the tones that come to mind for ME:

T/D = SRV to The Edge
DLX = My Fav for the clean to the light Grit (from the Police to the Edge)
VX = Beatles/ Stones / Edge / Queen / Petty / George Harrison
COD = Modern Power Pop Music/ Rush (in the 80's) / Steve Lukather / Jeff Beck / Edge / Johnny Marr
BASSMAN= Zeppelin 1 / JET/ AC/DC a la Bon Scott/ Early Clapton/ Cream/ Allman Brothers
SL = Hendrix/ Zeppelin 2 / Zoso / AC/DC Back In Black/ 70's Clapton / Skynyrd / Pumpkins (Gish)
SL2 = Guns N Roses (Slash on Appetite For Destruction)/ Green Day / Blink 182 / Pumpkins (Siamese Deams) / Badmotorfinger
MHG = Alice In Chains/ Jane's Addiction (Nothing's Shocking)/ Zakk Wylde (the good stuff)/ Motley Crue Dr. Feelgood / Weezer / Foo Fighters / Superunknown
EG3/4 = ANYTHING and EVERYTHING thick and creamy -(my overall "Best In Show" module for ALL the modern rock stuff - a superior tone all over the hard rock map)
EG5 = VH 1978 - 1984/ Dokken/ Randy Rhoades / George Michael / Pet Shop Boys... just kidding
ERECT = Nu Metal/ Detuned Riffs / Metallica (Black album on)

Again this is just my take on the heavy stuff - which is what people here seem to play. My own personal style is more clean with compressed overdrive sound and I am using the DLX / COD / EG 3/4 as my main "go to" MOD 100 rig.

Thanks Spak, same to you bro!

I must say I love the BMan. It will be hard to use anything else as my clean/semi dirty module. Although, I would love the Vx and the COD(which I guess could be used as my second or dirty module).
I seem to be able to get Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rush and VH with this module. I can even get some of those tones on the MHG with the gain down!

I really want the SL or SL2 for my high gain Marshall tones, probably the SL2.

My favorite of the more modern heavy tones tend to be Alice in Chains/Zakk Wylde/Soundgarden/Rage Against the Machine/Tool/APC/and even Fuel. I seem to get this or close with the MHG and rolling back the gain gets me some convincing classic rock tones. Leads are so thick with this module! WOW!
Live at gigs, this module sounds so thick and full.

I also really want the EG3/4. I love what I hear when I listen to clips of this module!

It seems the nice thing about the high gain modules is the ability to cop other tones with the gain rolled way back!

I am a huge Lynch fan/Rhoads fan, etc but not really going for those tones. The MHG is more my tone and I have none of the cut issues I hear some mention.

I have been getting out of the whole modern metal detuned thing these days. My personal idea of modern heavy tones would be more the MHG or EG3/4. Even the SL2 for heavy Marshall.

Yeah - there is a lot of overlap of tones with this amp - which is why it is so fun to have. I just traded back the EG5 for the MHG which was one of my fav's before I sold it to you.

Since I have the MOD 50, the biggest problem i have is figuring out how to cover Zeppelin, Ruch, Cream, VH, GnR, Alice in Chains and modern rock all in two amp modules. I can get a huge variety by varying gain but it can be a pain going back to the amp adjusting gain. Although I am not in a band at the moment so just jamming with guys and doing covers is no big deal. For the MHG, I just keep channel B at a higher volume for lead this way when I want to play GnR or VH I just lower the gain on both A and B...then turn em up for heavier stuff. All the while keeping the volume higher on B for leads. One thing that makes this possible is that channel A and B on MHG sound almost identical. The other thing and easier for gigging would be to use a boost or EQ for lead boosts. This way A could be my lower gain and B heavier gain. This is assuming the particular module isn't designed to have B more lead friendly and A more rhythm friendly. Another issue is having a boost or EQ that can handle the +4 input! Ugh.

Thoughts?????

Try the Dunlop Bradshaw Boost /Line Driver. I love it. I also use whatever pedals that I need in front of the MOD100 to get the level of grit I like. Sometimes my favorite sound is the classic Tube Screamer OD straight into a clean amp channel. Whatever works. I am a tone freak - but I am not a purist. I'll plug into any pedal that works - but generally the MOD100 with the 6 channels paired with the Dunlop Boost pedal at the end of the pedal chain covers it.
