I didn't realize this until recently
Farmers don't really own their crops and legally aren't allowed to sow crops using seeds from the previous year. 2-3 large seed genetics companies modified/developed the seeds of crops and legally own the rights to them. Farmers have to pay a subscription service; which isn't cheap, to "rent" seeds each year from these companies.
