Vintage TS9 and TS808 vs. Modern Variants

I'm big on that od9pro+, but you can't be afraid to use a bit of gain from the pedal because at gain-0 it is cleaner than the typical ts.
Yeah I’m liking the OD9pro+ myself as well.

I think I’ll try to grab an OD9pro+ and a boss GE-10.

Lots of great info here; most pedals I'd mention have been covered. But, what nearly all of them do is, as the tighten the response many will lose low end, and 'narrow' the tone...which of course, is part of the job.
But, 1 pedal that tightens, without losing low end, leaves the sound big/wide without narrowing it, is quieter than any pedal I've ever played( I still have an 86 SD1, have had many OD1s, Savage Drive, VFE and other pedals) is the Boss OD1X. Where I used to double boost a Jubilee for example, the OD1X does what my 2 pedals I used to use do. I also had a vintage Boss GE 10, great unit but after dialing it in, it sounded almost identical to the OD1X and was far noisier.

This isn’t the first time you’ve mentioned the OD1X. I think that would balance well with an SD1 since I was looking at a GE-10 to compliment an OD9pro+.

I have tried TOO many Tube Screamer and variants of which. These include vintage, modern and spins from other brands...

What can I say after that? I learned that I am not typically a Tube Screamer person, I have a vintage unit from the first year they released as well as the newest iteration, the "mini" Tube Screamer which both sit on a shelf unused. BUT there are 3 Tube Screamer types that I REALLY love and have earned permanent spots on boards.

The Wampler Paisley Drive - TS8008 Variant that fixes basic Tube Screamer cons (Works well with volume knob, more gain on tap, keeps treble and bass of your base tone, can emulate Zwreck sound). This is perfect for any country Tele/Strat or Country guitarist. It has a switch for EQ shapes and a switch to boost or lower the presence as a Marshall amp type voicing. So you can mix that with the TS circuit of the pedal.

The Wampler Moxie - A TS10 circuit that enables you to make switch from the JRC455D to Mosfet for a boost or you can flatten the EQ and got more of a Timmy or Klon mixed with a Tube Screamer. The result is basically 5 pedals in one, it sounds great regardless of what switches ans where the knobs are set. You have tons of volume and gain.

The Catalinbread Sidearm - A TS9 Variant that has a mids control and a Tilt EQ. The standard TS Mids stays the same in a fixed setting but the mids control messes with different frequencies and the tilt EQ is a much needed, modern changeup. More gain makes the pedal able to go into borderline/almost Metal spaces (Think 90's alt rock- stuff like Creed, Three Doors Down).

Here's my video on the Sidearm:

So yeah, for me it's gotta highly modified version of the Tube Screamer. I just really don't care for a stock Boss SD-1, Blues Driver or Tube Screamer. I don't mind stock Klons, BB circuit, Timmy, etc but I feel stock TS/SD1 circuits need alot of tinkering to be usuable.

Grabbed an OD9pro+ and have it being shipped my way. I didn’t know these weren’t made anymore so it was hard to track a good one down.

Those are really great. If set to the "standard" clean-boost with level at max and drive at 0 they are cleaner than the basic ts9 or 808.
Sometimes I use the toggle in normal with the drive at 9:00-11:00, and other times with the toggle in boost with the drive at 8:00-9:00.

Even using the drive to inject some more typical screamer compression, the od9pro+ still keeps a clearer more dynamic sound and feel.
I tend to prefer staying at 9v instead of 18v, but I can see where 18v might be better for boosting some guitars/pickups.

I’d take a VFE Standout over a tube screamer. I believe he had a write up that the standout or dragon was basically a tube screamer, but the user could determine the frequencies they wanted vs having a factory single setting.

That said, don’t overlook a nice vintage EQ like the MXR 10 band or Boss GE-10. They can get most if not all of a TS tonal affect.
I’ve had a standout for years and it’s a great pedal, but always wished i could have a bit of clipping added in like a tubescreamer ads (some of my amps don’t get along as well with a pure-clean boost)

about two months ago I got the Dragon from Peter’s recent run of pedals, i really should have got one years ago, it’s not been turned off since I got it, it’s the most tweakable and best sounding ts-style pedal I have. I would highly recommend it.

this shit just always cracks me up

Buy a vintage one and sell it for 5x what you paid for it 😏

Buy a Behringer and get the sound of the shitty stock TS808 it will last only a few gigs with that plastic casing and 2nd rate Chinese knockoff parts.

This just validates my purchases of unique TS variants even more so.

in the beginning of the video he talks about how JHS and most other pedal companies buy all their parts from behringer, so theres a little pedals out there with shitty parts.

Josh says alot of things 😆

No different than Paul Red claiming that slap bass was first done in the late 70's lol

Build quality is worth admission though and if that statement was true, Behringer would be rich enough to release better products with top builds and lasting components, also they'd strive for metal housed mini pedals and I don't see that happening.

Japetus and Mr.Mansfield know whats up .....

Sounds like an awesome boost for something like hair metal but how does it sound without a high gain amp in the back of it? Are there demos for how it interacts with a low gain or completely clean Fender type amp?

Sorry so many questions. The paint job is cool, reminds me of earlier 90's remote controlled gas cars paint scheme.

it's simply a tube screamer variant ... a blend of the earliest 808 circuits .... with modern parts .... I lay out the PCB's to maximize noise reduction .... I'm not breaking any new ground .... if anything I'm upgrading quality ...
so it's going to react and interact just like any decently made screamer
and I like High Gain applications ...... especially the way Blake's using it as a clean boost .... with the chip I use in it .... it retains your tone while giving you that 808 mid hump and thickness

Awesome, thanks!!!

Sounds like yours is better than the typical TS clone then, at the very least. More clarity and usability, very cool!

a big sleeper Tube Screamer variant is the EQD Palisades ..... it's basically a TS with just about any mod that's been done to that circuit in one pedal ... a big feature is the two separate gains .. it's definitely worth checking out if you want a SUPER fine tunable modded Screamer ...

That looks pretty sweet!

By the way, I still have that dual pedal (that I asked you to build) on my mind, I just have to buy a few things before I get there.
