OK, I have an Ultra and an Ed Roman bass guitar. Both are great, one's for sale. Since I'm not doing metal anymore, this bass isn't a good fit (SPAM: BC Rich Spider bass, 4 string for sale) and its case is gathering dust, except for its regular usage to keep it in top playing condition: great playing, sounding and looking bass.

So you have a BC Rich bass that you bought from Ed, or you had him make you a bass of that style?

I know that Ed has a bad reputation by many and I personally didn't deal with him during the construction of my axe after we nailed down the original configuration of the guitar I wanted.

I only spoke with the actual luthier during the build process.

My Quicksilver is the best and highest quality, easiest playing, most versitile, best electronics and beautiful guitar that I've ever owned or played - regardless what your opinion is of the leprechaun himself. Right out of the case the action was absolutely perfect and the neck was exponentially better than all others that I have owned or played. This includes but is not limited to: Baker, Anderson, PRS, Gibson LP-X, Ibanez, Brian Moore 6&7, Carvin, Suhr, Mayones, Ernie Ball Music Man John Petrucci 6&7 Sig, etc...

- David

I had Ed's shop build this back in the early '90s, when he was still at East Coast Music Mall in Danbury CT. My guitarist at the time, had nothing but great things to say about Ed, and bought all his gear at ECMM - he's the one that took me there for the first time - great shop. Ed always treated me right, and great - very fair. In fact, I bought a bass from ECMM kept it for awhile and traded it in for the custom built BC Rich spider I had his custom shop build to my specs, he gave me full credit for the bass I had, no questions asked - well Ed looked at it, and had a guy in the back take a look to make sure it was fine.

When I bought the bass, Bernie Rico had sold his name/company whatever, and whoever had it was abusing the name. Ed bought all the BC Rich custom shop blanks, etc., from Bernie during the sale period. This is what he used to make these American Custom BC Rich basses and guitars. Every one I checked out and played was excellent. Ed and Bernie were friends as far as I remember.

That's why I was curious as to why it seemed Ed has such a bad rep here? I had only great experiences in my dealings with him.

What a poor, sad man Carl is. I hope people realize, he's probably heavily sedated on psychotropic drugs and I suspect that's a huge reason for why he acts like he does.

I am highly surprised that this type of behavior hasn't caught up with him in real life. I guess if you never leave your house though, how could it? Much like when people get addicted to online gaming or gambling, Carl has created a world for himself to live in. His behavior suggests underlying issues of addiction that I can only imagine manifest themselves in real life.

I sometimes wonder if more of us knew him in real life, if we would truly ignore him, much like you ignore a 3 year old calling you bad names. They just don't know any better, or can't control it.

I used to manage a group home for the developmentally disabled, and there were certain behaviors that, yes- you ignored, BUT you can't ignore someone when they are attacking you, or someone else. Granted this is the internet, BUT Carl just acts like an idiot, he's not actually retarded-- Delusional, probably. He is quite a sad and pathetic person, imo-- but fortunately for me, I don't have to tolerate his kind of BS, nor should I OR anyone else be expected to.

main point "this is the internet"

Certain people have been at each others throats for YEARS...multiple forums, etc. After a while, you have to realize that bitching at someone isn't going to change anything, and you just move on.

When Bernie (Bernardo) first got into the guitar building business, my dad was his main wood supplier for all his Bernardo’s classic, flamenco and dreadnought acoustic guitars.

I remember when I would go with my Father to Bernardo’s shop that the workers all sat on wooden tree stumps while carving by hand the necks and bodies of these acoustics. Talk about old school!

Obviously since then, Bernardo began to get into the electric guitar market and the rest is history.

I’ve got some cool stories about the first Stick that was the idea of Emmett Chapmen. My Father made the first 100 or so runs of these exotic instruments. There are few to this day that have been able to play, mush less master the instrument. All the frets are grounded.

Have some friends in Analog Missionary, Cool people, they do a lot of ambient type stuff, thier bass player, Tony Novack plays the stick, and does it well. The guy can play anything, they use a ton of different instruments in thier stuff, even a theriman. Actually the singer plays the theriman, she is his wife. They are wrapping up thier new album, I believe its thier third album, They have a studio in Silverhill, AL. where they do all of the recordings. They do a great job on their recordings, the sound quality is very good. If anyone here likes that type of music, give 'em a listen - Jim

So, no one wants to discuss the Axe-Fx here? I know its not the best topic/thread, but we can salvage it by talking gear?

Who dislikes the Axe-Fx and why? :poke:

What are some issues with Ed Roman guitars?

I'm real happy with both.
I love my Axe-FX. I think most here who have one or have played one love theirs as well.

Some people feel Ed Roman overcharges for sub-par instruments, takes credit for others' work, etc. He build me a really cool guitar, well built great playing/sounding of my design and then went on to make it a line of guitars without ever asking me if it was cool to use my design. Frankly, I wouldn't have cared anyway, but I feel he should have given me the courtesy of asking. He was also very difficult to deal with over the LONG period it took to get the guitar done. He was always rude when I called (infrequently) to ask about progress, never could give me any idea of when it would be done and generally acted like he was doing ME a favor by talking to me and taking on a project I paid him large cash up front for. No customer service, however, I've found this to be the case with every custom guitar builder I've dealt with except for Lee Garver and Michael Charvel. YMMV...

Hey... gear discussion. Bitchin'! How 'bout we all get back to it?

Steve

will you post a pic of the guitar ed built for you?

I remember when he first started building quicksilvers. I drove up to his place in CT pretty convinced that a quicksilver would be my next guitar. Ed was rude on the phone, but when i got to his place (huge old recording studio) he was actually pretty cool. He continued to yell at his wife and hammer customers over the phone while i was there, but he took the time to show me different builders' guitars and consistently shit on ibanez and esp :) . He left me alone in a back room for a while and came back to tell me that i needed to "turn up the amp" if I was going to play his guitars. I didn't like the quicksilver as much as the many prs guitars he had. I preferred his bc rich eagles to all of the above.
Hey man!

I finally found the pics of the guitar Ed Roman had built for me:

Cool huh? That is a Steinberger TransTrem, of course and a Fernandes Sustainer in the neck position. I wrote this song where I kept switching it from E to F# tuning, pulling up the bar and locking it in F# and then knocking it off the lock back to E for parts. Was a cool tune. I hate the recording I did though - I'm so much better at recording now. Tune was aw'ite though - unfortunately I can't re-record it because I no longer have this guitar...

Hey Steve, I bet you could play the intro to "Summer Nights" by Van Halen note-for-note, couldn't ya? :)
Me personally... umm,... no. In fact, I couldn't play ANY cover tune note for note because I suck. However, "Summer Nights" certainly could be played note-for-note on that guitar by a more talented guitarist... :)
