when i was a teenager i loved AJFA tone, i used to go crazy with the mid scooping to try and get that tone back in the day

til this day i kinda still have that tone in my head as the end all be all metal tone, but once you take all the layers away it sounds like a brittle POS

now a days ive changed a bit and my favorite metal tones came from unearths "the oncoming storm" record

that cd just has massively brutal tones

theunearth tone is good but today the metal tones sound really small after an old album like ajfa..

this is the guitar track on ajfa without the layers it sounds so shrill......still it did sound awesome after all polishing up it got in the studio

the black album had better tone by far

Chris DeGarmo from Mindcrime and Empire era. Aggressive, crunchy, but with great clarity.

i don't think so. ajfa was scooped as hell it isn't even really very good tone. i like kill em all better than ajfa out of old metallica tone lol

Not talking about albums but amps.....
I would have to say the Diezel Herbert. That thing is a metal machine that sounds GREAT!
Owned alot of amps....Engls, Splawn, Framus Cobra's, Mesa....
The Herbert is where the Monster gain is.

it's also where the 4000 dollar price tags are isn't it? or more? lol

I have seen a few of them for around $2800.....
pricey....but worth it.
I sold 2 amps and 2 guitars to get mine....
WELL WORTH IT! ;)

yea when i was younger i loved that tone until i realized it had no definition and couldnt cut for shit over a drummer. if i had to pick a fav metallica sound now it would deff be the black album tone

you can only scoop lke that unless you have a mark series or a diezel then it will cut above the drummer...its not scooping its when u scoop a shitty amp

could just be because of what happened but I've always loved Vivan's tone on Holy Diver. Straight thru the Heart, my favourite Dio song.

Zappa's HUGE range of tones... That alone oughta keep one busy for a lifetime.

In the "metal" arena, I'd have to say one song ALWAYS comes to mind, Triad by Tool. Instrumental, but I CRAVE & LOVE that tone. So, I guess Adam Jones and his roster of Diezels and Mesa's and some simplistic stomps in the front. I loved Rhoad's tone too - just a dimed Marsha for all it's worth through hot pups. Ministry has some terrific hot tones too, check out Bad Blood or Just One Fix, good stuff...lots of goodies with Ministry. System of a Down had some unique and interesting metal tones for sure too, Spiders comes to mind. In fact, Spiders has a passage of just outrageously awesome tone, I'll have to find it and imbed the vid, but there's a section of just amazing, semi-flanged, semi-DD'd, cranked and gained tone in the midst of the song that KILLS IT!!

Peace, I'm on a search now...
