Zappa's HUGE range of tones... That alone oughta keep one busy for a lifetime.

In the "metal" arena, I'd have to say one song ALWAYS comes to mind, Triad by Tool. Instrumental, but I CRAVE & LOVE that tone. So, I guess Adam Jones and his roster of Diezels and Mesa's and some simplistic stomps in the front. I loved Rhoad's tone too - just a dimed Marsha for all it's worth through hot pups. Ministry has some terrific hot tones too, check out Bad Blood or Just One Fix, good stuff...lots of goodies with Ministry. System of a Down had some unique and interesting metal tones for sure too, Spiders comes to mind. In fact, Spiders has a passage of just outrageously awesome tone, I'll have to find it and imbed the vid, but there's a section of just amazing, semi-flanged, semi-DD'd, cranked and gained tone in the midst of the song that KILLS IT!!

Peace, I'm on a search now...

One band:

ICED fucking EARTH !!!! :rawk:

I especialy love the tone on Alive in Athens (Larry Dino + SLO 100) , but pretty much all the albums sounds good, even Iced Earth and Night of the Stormrider (overdrive + jcm 800)

Nothing sounds even close.

Otherwise I like Keep of Kalessin's tone on Armada (5150)

For lead tones I love Blind Guardian on the last records... and Therion

high on fire.
electric wizard.
bongzilla.
sleep.
winter.
black sabbath.

Oh ya, this may be laughed at but I love the muff tones of early Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream - love it... Aggro retro thicko coolio!!

and also....

S.O.D. - Speak English or Die

Hmm.

I've always loved the tones on Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry. A bit processed by todays standards, but it just works absolutely perfect on that disc.

Lots of others I enjoy, but that one always stood out to me.

You can cover the Best Metal tones ever

Surprised to see Vivian Cambell's tone on "Holy Diver" listed on here, but I agree...it's a good classic Marshall type crunch. If I remember right, he was using 50W JCM 800's with a BOSS SD-1 back then.

Fear Factory - Demanufacture

A friend of mine owns the 5150 head / Recto cab this album was recorded with.

That's like.. 5 of my 15 minutes.

where did he get that info? That album was all modded Marshall.

I like early Black Sabbath with Ozzy and Tool's first 3 albums. I do not really consider these "metal" bands and really never been a fan of "metal" very much.

Gary Moore Victims Of The Future
Not really metal but Black Flag Slip It In
Early 80's Y&T
Entombed - Wolverine Blues/Hollowman EP
Sabbath Vol4
Not a favorite band of mine but Queensryche Op. Mind Crime.
Slayer - RIB
Anthrax - Among The Living
Metallica - First three, can't pick one
Judas Priest - Hell Bent For Leather for old school and Screaming For Vengeance for newer.
Zodiac Mindwarp - Tattooed Beat Messiah
Accept - Staying a Life (live)
Whitesnake - 1987
Napalm Death - Enemy of the Music Business, also my favorite drum recording for grindcore/speed.
AC/DC - Fly On The Wall /don't care what anybody says, that's a metal tone.
Salty Dog - Come Along
Rob Zombie - Hellbilly deluxe
Prong - Cleansing
Helmet - Betty
In Flames - Colony
Hammerfall - Legacy Of Kings
Zakk Wylde - Phony Smiles and Fake Hellos / Mother Mary

I think the hugest tone I've ever heard is A Looking In View on the newest AIC album. When all the guitars kick in it's so layered and just...huge.

Also love tones from:

Deftones
Tool
Mindcrime/Empire era Queensryche
KSE- End of Heartache
