There are so many to pick from. Accept-Balls to the Wall, Dokken-Tooth and Nail, S.O.D.-S.E.O.D.-Slayer-Hell Awaits, Pantera-Vulgar, Pestilence-Consuming Impulse, Mercyful Fate-D.B.T.O., Armored Saint-Delerious Nomad, SYL-S.T., Believer-Sanity Obscure, Carcass-Heartwork, Malevolent Creation-Retribution, Anthrax-Among the Living, my Fortin Cali.

Metallica - Reload era is pretty high on my list. Also, one album that impressed me from the first few seconds after the guitars kicked in - KSE As Daylight Dies
Somebody mentioned FNM King For A Day, that's also one of my personal landmarks. Anybody knows what was used on that record?

Down - A Bustle...
Chimaira - Resurrection
Megadeth - RIP, UA
Strapping Young Lad
Deftones
Gojira

Metallica Garage Inc. Juiciest mids ever. Tight yet dripping with sustain and gain. Awesome.

Although I hate playing in drop tunings because I consider it "cheating", I do love the sound of it.
I'm all over the place on this one:
Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal
Job For a Cowboy - Ruination
Gojira - all
Vader - Necropolis
Exodus

Not dropped to Z:

Slayer - Reign In Blood
Skeletonwitch - Breathing The Fire
Black Sabbath - all, but like the new Heaven and Hell tones the best.

Really love the tone on Dr. Feelgood by Crue, just a huge rhythm tone IMHO and for lead tones I would have to say anything on Andy Timmons Resolution disc as well as most of anything Lynch did up to the first Lynch Mob disc.

where did he get that info? That album was all modded Marshall.

He worked @ Bearsville when that disc was tracked.

Tool...all of em.
Smashing Pumpkins...Siamese Dream and Melancholy
System of a Down...Scrantonicity or whatever...(their live tones suck ballz)
Deftones...Around the Fur

And also.....NIN and RATM

Maybe not "metal" but definately DISTORTED as all get out...and heavy.

quote from an interview with Dino.....

"Tell me about your set-up. How do you get your most unique heavy-duty distortion sound on Demanufacture?

DC: “Mine, it’s pretty simple. I created and developed the sound over the years, just years of experimenting with different amplifiers, different pedals and different modifications, till finally I found this modification that worked really well with what I wanted to do. I had a pre-amp built inside a Marshall JCM-800 head, and I really liked the JCM-800 head because it had this traditional Marshall sound that I liked. Like if you turn up to ten, you get this really full crunch. But you see, I didn’t wanna have to turn up to ten to get the sound, I wanted to turn up to two and still have the same sound, so I can practice in my house (chuckles). So I had this guy build my head for me, and it sounded amazing. So now I needed the right guitar, I went through all these guitars, all these pickups and so on, and so on. And now it’s evolved to a seven-string guitar, and the whole guitar is tuned down to A."

The Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal

ooh i like that one too, just sounded real elastic for lack of a decent description. but, carcass heartwork was my favorite over all. just dense and brutal.
i think metal guys get too caught up in having a super tight sound. those two are semi loose to me and perfect....

I really want to play with a Cobra for a while, cuz I think it would pretty much get me exactly where I want to go for my tone. As far as bands go? KSE and Decapitated have some of my favorites. I think Arch Enemy has my overall favorite tone, though...

my dying bride 43%
entombed wolverine blues
fear factory demanufacture
tool 10,000 days
alice in chains black gives way to blue
soilwork stabbing the drama

Petrucci - Awake
Sykes - Blue Murder
Jones - Everything
Hetfield - MOP

My favourite from high to low:

  • Matt Pike's tone on High on Fire's third last album, Blessed Black Wings - It's pure Soldano bliss.
  • The Ocean - Pure VH4 glory.
  • Adam Jones' tone on Ænima - Marshall and Diezel bliss.
  • Architects' Hollow Crown - I bloody love their producing.
  • Mudvayne's Lost and Found - Fryette/VHT awesomeness.
  • Cancer Bats - More VH4 glory.
  • The Dillinger Escape Plan's Ire Works album.
  • Gojira's From Mars to Sirius - One of the only times I've really liked a Mesa Boogie
