Well, he wrote some killer songs and some of his bass lines are pretty fucking cool. And his voice, at least in the early days, was killer.
I just ain't much of a Kiss fan. The first album was cool but Paul and Gene started screwing everything up after that.

My understanding is that Paul plays the solo in "World Without Heroes" which is a nice atmospheric, almost David Gilmour thing.

First three KISS albums and then early 80’s Gene has some killer tunes for sure!!!

I feel his songs from Destroyer, R&R Over and Love Gun get to “character-y” for me, if that makes sense?

This is a fun thread but in all seriousness, how?

I mean have you listened to Peter's solo album? That was what those guys were having to deal with. Gene's solo album was about ego, Peter was really trying to be the next Sinatra. Peter gets a hit with Beth then starts putting demands on the band. The dude was so drugged out they had to dub his voice in that stupid movie. By all accounts, his wife included - Peter was crazy. Even on the Reunion tour it's documented the guy came back humble ready to work after essentially be out of the spotlight for 20 years and by the end of the tour he was intolerable.

And when a guy just doesn't show up to record his guitar parts after you just hit pay dirt, how as a band are you supposed to deal with crap like that. Ace for all his supposed talents, and he was a great meat n potatoes player only "individually" wrote 8 songs his entire time in Kiss.

Two guys willing to work and two fuck ups is basically what Kiss was. I'm amazed that Gene and Paul kept it going for 50 years.

That song is the musical equivalent of this coffee commercial:

The solo wasn't terrible, but the tone sounded like it was dialed in by someone who'd walk around clasping their coffee mug with two hands.

Two screw ups and two guys willing to work. Sounds like the average rock band to me.

I wasn't really speaking so much on their work ethic or lack thereof but just on the material itself. Ace still pretty much sounds like early Kiss. Paul and Gene in total command resulted in some gross music with maybe a bit of marginal stuff here and there. No I haven't listened to Peter's album. I had the first album and it was obvious from most of what I heard going forward that it was a band in decline from the beginning. Peter and Ace are the NYC gutter drunks and the first album had that sound and it was a great sound. Gene and Paul are a couple of prissy soyboys and their material sounds like some prissy soyboy stuff to me for the most part. Since I like to hang out back by the dumpsters myself, the only album I can listen to front to back is the first one.

So Torpedo Girl sounds like Cold Gin or Parasite lol? Zero doubt G&P wrote some clunkers as I've said multiple times in this thread but they also wrote some great stuff and in the 80's and 90's as well. Ace, not so much his high point was Cold Gin and Parasite on the first two albums. You should do yourself a favor or disfavor and pull up Peter's solo album, then put yourself in their mindset and think this is the stuff he was wanting the band to make lol.
