I've thought about that too, although part of what I like about the JEL-100 is having two independent channels. That's why I was wondering if maybe the 2nd channel of the King Kong could be tweaked to JEL specs. Otherwise, the right OD in front of my 2203 could probably get me close :-)
I wish Dave would make the JEL-100 a regular production amp. It's about the only Friedman that I've been really interested in, but I missed out on the limited edition, and I'm not gonna pay what they're going for used. I'd be more likely to see if Nic @ Ceriatone could mod the King Kong to JEL...
IIRC the Ceriatone transformer thing was years and years ago. I can't remember if it was a single batch that had issues, or what, but they determined what the problem was and corrected it. It seems like it comes up whenever someone asks about Ceriatone, but it was a past, isolated problem. I've...
I've been using a Fortin Zuul for several years, and it's worked great for me. Keys off the signal coming from my guitar, but gates in the loop. It's a pricier option, but I think the Zuul is one of several pedals designed around the 4301/4305 chip, so you can probably find a similar pedal with...
Egnater Tourmaster 412. I was browsing a Guitar Center used cabinets a few years back, and stumbled across one at a price I couldn't pass up. It is far and away my favorite cabinet.
I like them too. I ended up with some V-Types when I couldn't find the Lynchbacks that I really wanted. They have qualities of both V30s and Greenbacks that I like, without being either of them.
One thing I don't like about them is that I don't think they sound as good as they get pushed...
Randall 667. I was expecting to be underwhelmed. Then I rolled in some different pre tubes and swapped out the JJ EL34s for Tungsol, gave it a proper biasing, and through my V30 4x12 it just roars. Big iron, thick PCBs. It's my primary gigging amp.
I've gotten my Axe-FX III dialed in to where I move seamlessly between that and my tube rig. It took a while to get there, basically having to learn a new platform after spending decades using tube amps.
For me, it's important to use the Axe with a real guitar cab in the room. No amount of...
I'm not a tech, but I guess I kinda assumed that any variations in wall voltage would affect the voltages of pre and power tubes.
When the wall voltage fluctuates, it seems like voltages to preamp and power tubes would be similarly affected, unless they're being fed regulated voltages. I've...
Fractal into a SS amp and traditional guitar cab is my favorite way to use a modeler, although I'm increasingly using it direct for recording, and via FRFR.
I don't know that I'd sell your tube amps just yet though. It was about 18 months after I'd gotten my Axe-FX III that I finally felt like...
In the whole scheme of things, the up-front cost of musical gear seems fairly modest compared to other professions. I have friends who are plumbers, electricians, dentists, etc., and I don't envy their startup costs. Most of us could buy our dream amp for less than the cost of the 2-4+ years of...
