The only one I have any exp with is the Kemper toaster from about 7 yrs ago. I did have an AXE AX8 a few yrs back, sounded good. A couple guys I know that still play out in my area, use a Helix and sound great through the PA.
The Kemper has more of an amp feel than those others I played. But, ultimately still had this 'digital' thing going on that I can't unhear.
The digital feel is something i want to avoid for sure. Hadn’t really thought about it in that way. Yeah i get that this is all modeling and electronic so real possibilities for issues there. But gives me reservations. Good to know yiur experience with it and that some of your friends setups seem to be working out.

Welcome to Rig-Talk.
Don't buy any Fender modeling.
Get the Helix or Snax or Kemper, like these guys are saying.
I have a Peavey Vypyr 60 with a tube power section and Transtube technology and it is decent. It is also 10 years old and $315
Out of curiosity why is everyone off on the fender modeling? Just not what they do…. So don’t do it well or fender biased models of other equipment…. Because they are selling fender or something?
I’m not necessarily opposed to something oldish. Have an electrical background (not electronics) so could get into working on some of that type stuff too…. But thinking that would be a slippery slope for me. Already looking at building a guitar…. Why not an amp right. Built some speaker boxes many many years back haha. I mean what could go wrong?
Not familiar with snax or kemper. Will give them a look too. Thanks

Considering one of the hx stomps and maybe need to compare to the tonex. Any thoughts?
i dont have any experience with the tone x yet; but the hx stomp will do everything you mentioned i believe and sound good right out the box. then add a Seymour Duncan powerstage and a 2x12 cab later and you're set. you can practice through headphones or monitors.

Is “snax” axe? Looked that up and out if my league pricewise. Actually was kind of liking the II vs the III cause has the knob interface….

Thanks. Will definitely continue looking into the hx stomp.
Question…. Looked at the SD powerstage but not following what it’s for exactly. Why would i need that and when. Can’t i just run the modeler “pedal” directly to whatever monitor/ cab i get? Or is that something ill need to fit a wah pedal into the mix? Along those lines am i going to be able to connect a wah pedal directly to any of the modeler pedals and/ or say a FR12 fender cab? I note also that you mention 2x12. Assuming that means 2 12” in one cab right? Am i really going to ultimately want/ need that?

never tried the Tonex, had a Helix LT; still have and use a HX-Effects. HX Stomp is a good option IMO. John Nathan Cordy gets great sounds from his on YT.

Yes, and if I wanted a modeler personally I would go Stomp, but that is just me. There are definitely dudes on here that have tried all three. You'll get more hits starting tomorrow hopefully.

Only the best will do for a first amp.

I have Catalyst 100. They just released a new CX version, and unlike the Boss Katana you can upgrade Catalyst to the new Catalyst CX firmware adding more amp / cab models and effects.

Worth a look.

so do you use the 100 in addition to a modeling pedal or by itself?

I use my HX-Effects in 4CM (4 cable method, to put some effects before the preamp/guitar input, and other, time based effects after the preamp stage and before the power amp section. I also use the MIDI in the HX-Effects to change channels and turn the Catalyst boost on/off. It's a more complex set-up but works and sounds great in a small package.

You don't need another modeler because the Catalyst has 12 amp models built in and 24 effects that you can use two at a time. This way you have everything in combo amp to start with.

I don't use the Catalyst effects because I have more options in the HX-Effects.

Do all of these pedals have wifi capability? Getting a little bogged down in some of the minutae but think thats a feature i would want primarily for when im playing acoustic drums so i can listen to music and backing tracks when im not plugged in (like guitar) or am i missing something? Why would i not need wifi to pull this iff?

That helps. Thanks for expkaining. Still chewing on some of it…. A lot to take in right now but a lot is starting to make sense.

she's joking.

...I think :D
Hedging my bets sort of. Betting someone had that as a first amp and would have a hard time letting it go…. Fwiw I didn’t get the impression “she” was making a recommendation….. more like an i observation

some digital modelers allow you to play tracks over USB, not sure on wireless.

I think you're trying to do several things that are really different rigs, unless you get up to Helix / Axe-Fx level gear.

There are so many options available, it can get confusing; and expensive if you have to keep buying / selling.

Guitar --> amp is basic; you can have pedals with it or a multi-effect. If you get a modeling amp, Katana or Catalyst, you have several amp models and effects all in the amp, so you don't need a modeler right away. If you get a modeler, you will need amplification such as a powered PA speaker or similar. If you want to play drums along with music, you need a computer rig with audio interface and studio monitors which won't be loud enough, so you're looking at a PA again, at least one powered PA cab, and you'll need a source for the music you want to playback...

I think the simplest starting point for a guitar rig with versatility is a digital modeling amp, such as Katana or Catalyst. so amp models, power amp, effects and speaker all-in-one.

If you plan to get a powered PA cab (or two for stereo) for music playback with drums, then a digital modeler (not amp) would work; you would need a way to get the music playback into it so a small mixer would be needed if you wanted to play guitar with the tracks too.

edit: I think there are some modelers that let you play tracks too, from your computer or phone IIRC?
