20thA XTC Review - about 20 hours in...

Atropos: Well said. Glad you're digging it so far. What's really cool is how useful each switch and mode actually is. With my old 101b, I pretty much set it and left it. True, it's not an ultra modern amp, but is modern enough for me. I'm starting to grow tired of 'modern' sounding amps anyway...they don't tend to have enough midrange bite for me. And yeah the Class A mode is cool...I think it's a $300 charge.

I am seriously considering selling my new Mesa Dual Rectifier to help fund a used 20th XTC. How heavy it is? Is it a monster refrigerator like a Diezel?

I currently have a 20th Shiva with EL34s and a new Dual Recto. I keep thikning I am just a Bogner guy all the way but don;t want tons of overlap. How similar are the 20th Shiva and XTC?

Hell, maybe I will end up with an XTC, Shiva and Goldfinger!

Any of you guys do bar gigs with the 20th Shiva? Seems like a lot of amp and money to be taking to local bars! :)

The Shiva and XTC are not very similar. The Shiva is a lot more "marshally" The XTC is not very heavy (weight) compared to Diezels. I sold my VH4 and now use the 20th XTC and it feels like a feather compared to the VH4. I use my XTc for bar gigs all the time.. Why spend a lot of cash on a rig to play it in the bedroom only?

Thanks man!

I heard some talk of odd ghost notes and modulation sounds with the 20th XTC. Any guys notice that?

Depends which XTC. IMO the 101b XTCs that came with the post-04 factory mod can have weird, unpleasant overtones. The 20th? Not at all.

[funky overtones, etc]

Nothing but pure bliss with my 20thA... All volume levels, all styles, pure tonal bliss.

2 cents,
V.

Aw dude, that won't last long... Why you selling?!?!

V.

I've got too much gear bro, and being I don't gig I'm having a hard time justifying having so many expensive amps. I need the money to use elsewhere. It's an amazing amp for sure! If I was in a band (or rich haha!) I would keep it in a heartbeat!

I've taken my XTC to all sorts of shit bars, lol. Most people don't even know what a Bogner is and also I fully subscribe to the "it's meant to be played" mentality.

I find it's hard NOT to play like hell when plugged into this work of art...

FWIW, as per a few PMs that have drifted into my inbox, I'll be doing some clips of this rig this weekend, and should have 'em up Sunday night, Monday day. Straight up, no FX for the most part, clean - crunch - gain - rippin'. Mostly soundtest material, as per the request of these PMs - probably no backing drums or the like - just naked.

Lookin' forward to it.

Same goes for the Hagen if you're at all interested (see Diezel section for these).

Namaste,
Mojo

Killer ....
Got some good stuff last night... What I believe to be good representation of the amp's tone and scope. Just chopping the clips down to sensible portions right now, and will post ASAP. I think between the X and the Hagen, I logged about 5 hours of recordings

Peace,
Mojo

Nice work. looking forward to it. Its great to see you've had it from day 1 and still rocking it. I have the same love for my Shiva 20th. Just can't play it enough. Though Im thinking about swapping my 34s for the KTs now.... great stuff.
