20thA XTC Review - about 20 hours in...

FWIW, I always liked my Twin Jet with G12M / V30 speakers far more than with the V30 / G12T-75 mix. If I ever get another Uberschall, I'll probably try a VHT Deliverance 4x12 with P50Es or something similar with Scumback J75-LHDCs.

Ventura great review, thanks !
Aw, thanks man... Almost 1 year later and it still blows me away - love this amp...

Mo

Guys... I can't get over the benefit some hot biased KT77's (Gold Lions) have made to this rig  Gary, thank you so much for staying on my back about trying 'em out. This love affair just keeps going. The Blue channel, when pushed up around noon on the MV has a very very wicked bite to it now - colorful, tasty, rich - and super snarling and sweet!! Red and Green, overall just "MORE"...!!!

Anyone out there with an EL34 model 20thA, anyone out there considering getting one, just go straight for the GL-KT77's and crank it

Jaw STILL on floor, weeks later :D

Don't know man, wish we could AB the amps side by side, but the brass tax is, the KT77's just added more "more" to everything... Playing 'er RIGHT now, been at it for a couple hours, LOVIN' IT!!! Can't quite describe, other than "more better". How'dya make the Mona Lisa a better painting? Have her holding a matched quad of Gold Lion KT77's

you are all right ...

I have about 10 hours of playtime on mine so far... figured I'd throw my .02 here rather than start a new thread.

Some points if anyone is interested: I wouldn't necessarily label the 20th XTC as very "modern" if you're looking for a super-defined sort of ultra-tight high gain. Not to say the amp can't get heavy, because it certainly can... it just doesn't seem as geared to that sort of thing as much as some other amps might be.

With that out of the way, what this amp does have by the truckload is soul. Above anything else, it has picking dynamic sensitivity like nothing else I've plugged into... this isn't an amp that does the work for you, or masks anything for you, and that's a good thing IMO. You can go from slightly overdriven arpeggiated notes to a full roar on channel 3 by doing nothing other than hitting the strings harder.

What this winds up doing also is making you, as a player, pay a lot more attention to HOW you're playing... and probably ends up making one a better player in the long run.

Layout: Once you're used to the somewhat unusual switching setup on this amp, it's pretty easy to dial in what you're looking for. Coming from a Mark V, there are some setting flexibility points that I sort of wish the 20th had (for example, it'd be nice if there were structure switches for channels 2 / 3 individually), but that is by no means a huge issue.

While I'd like to look into getting the A / AB switch option retrofitted in the future (if possible), I'm 110% happy with this amp. Superb build quality, superb tone on every single channel, and a grin on my face every time I plug in.

Awesome post...

Give it another 10 hours and I think you may find that the EQ and tonal adjustments cover everything and make total tonal sense. At the first, I too had to think that some things were missing on the amp. But then it all started to seamlessly fold together. Perfectly.

Anyway, STOKED you are happy with this amp. I love mine. And hell, what's there not to love about it? Might not be for everyone, but goodness, for those who it is for, it's to me, a masterpiece.

Peace,
V.

PS - a MEGA Welcome Aboard!! :rawk:
