Likely similar in Canada. Northern Saskatchewan, Northwest and Yukon territories aren't highly populated either. Most of the US interior is also rural. People are weak for luxuries and comforts of city life plus most jobs are there.No one lives in the wide open desert - so while it's a fair understanding of our continent's geography it's not a good understanding of where we chose to live in it. I bet not much of Canada's population live in their "badlands" either, although I haven't done my research on that statement so I could be wrong. Australia's population is 86% urban and the rest of the 14% rural would be mostly nice green rural country - not desert.
