Best Delay Pedal?

I've used the Carbon Copy for a few years now. Pretty discrete & reliable pedal. Doesn't do the things a digital delay does of course so there's a place for an analog & digital delay on a board.

Todd, I agree the Rockman is a great delay. I have a Chandler, and SDE3000, but I need a pedal for this particular situation. I'm leaning towards a Boss DD3, but maybe I'll check out the Carbon Copy. . .a lot of guys seem to be using them.

I was gassing hard for a DD3 and then my buddy stopped by with both of his. One is stock with the coveted Roland chip and the other had the Roland chip as well but was tweaked with an "analog" mod which darkens the repeats. Played them side by side with my Carbon Copy for awhile and by the end of it I was happy with my CC. I liked the modified darker sounding DD3 a little better than the stock one, but ultimately thought the CC sounded the best. That's just my opinion. Those DD3s were killer though. Super clean sounding. Just thought the CC has a little more warmth and depth to it.

I have a Strymon DIG too which is a great delay but I prefer it on clean tones or after mild overdrives. I use it into the front of the amp for brighter rhythm stuff. My El Cap was the same. Sounds good in the loop but it seems to change the natural sound of the amp's gain while the CC just stays out of the way and adds depth more like a good reverb.

I haven't tried the CC, but I liked the Flashback a lot more than the DD3. Neither sounds anywhere near as good as the Chandler SDE, though. Man I wish they'd made a pedal of that thing (or that I'd never sold the rack one I had).

Tons of great delays these days but I've always been a boss guy. I have an old DD-2 that sounds great. I modeled it in my Intellifex so I have programable delay times I can control with an expression pedal. Pretty much all I need.
Had a carbon copy but didn't like it. It wasn't very clean sounding

TimeFactor fan here... But it's pretty f'n complex.

HardWire is a great pedal for the coin. In fact, I like pretty well the entire HardWire line up of stomps. And no, in these cases I don't care about true-bypass versus buffered, etc.

I have 3 delay pedals that fit your price range and can recommend all of them. Have a hardwire dl8, tc flashback x4, and tc nova repeater. Of them the flashback x4 is the warmest and the dl8 cuts the best. The tc repeater is nice in that at you have move subdivision options and can control the mods. Tc repeater is the only one I don't like before the amp.

for me the carbon copy, the new flash back tc electronics and the mad professor deep blue delay.

I'm not a heavy delay user, but I've been getting into it more in the past few years. I think it depends on whether you want the repeats to really stand out as melodic elements (i.e. clean stereo repeats for arpeggiated chords, the U2 dotted eighth thing) or want it to be more of a percussive support, like a slapback.

For the slapback stuff, I still love my Boss DM-2. I just got one of the DM-2w "Waza" models and it's great. In the standard mode, it does what my old DM-2 does - a great slapback that fattens your tone without getting in the way. In the custom setting, it gives you much longer delays that add ambience without getting too forward.

That said, it won't do a clean delay like the classic 2290. IMHO, the most versatile pedal out there for delay is the TC Flashback. I've got one of those as well and I really like it. I have a Boss DM-3 toneprint in that slot and it gets very close to my old DM-2, plus it has the clean and mod 2290 sounds which are fantastic.

IMHO, if you want something versatile that you can try a bunch of different sounds on, get the Flashback.

I really like my Guyatone MD3, and the little Hotone EKO delay. Great sounding, and affordable.

Depends what your looking for - tape, digital, analog......
I prefer clean precise digital delays like the tc 2290.
Closest pedal to the 2290 is hands down the Providence Chrono (or even better the earlier version - Providence Delay 80's if you can find one)

I had an MXR CC; great delay for the price.

But then I got a Strymon ElCapistan a few years back and it's my go-to.

I place it between amps (slaved rig) for perfectly clean repeats.

Someone mentioned the SR&D Stereo Delay; have one of these as well.
Although not a pedal (it's 1/2 rack), I agree it's fantastic and probably *the* best analog stereo delay unit ever made.

TC Nova delay. Street price is around $350 but I picked up a mint one for $100 on CL. Just saw that Sweetwater has them on sale for $170 new. You can store up to 8 presets and it has alot tweakable features. Sounds great and easy to set up.
