I love the el Capistran for everything. I just got the neunaber slate... The tape delay sound you get get from the software sounds perfect to my ears for a low mix delay for high to mid gain sounds. It's a set it and forget it pedal. The el cap is more of a tweaker. The reverbs in both pedals are great to.

I'd go with an old EHX Deluxe Memory Man for analog.

-EHX MEMORY MAN is a classic,...here's my issue with them

-#1 noisey
-#2 -(if were gonna go to that price range I'm going with the MF4,..-(every control/option can be controlled by an expression pedal)-
-#3 I think the MOOG is just a superior analog delay in all area's

I'm not an expert on delay by any means, but I just want to bring up some points that I haven't heard mentioned yet.

Analog delays have a more vintage sound with the highs reduced a bit with each repeat, like the vintage tape echoes they are based on.

Digital delays (for the most part) will have repeats that reduce in volume but NOT in pitch. Read more

Well, as long as we're bumped!

What kind of delay?
-tape
-analog
-digital
Pick one, give me a budget, and we can get to talking.

One of my very favorite delays I've had was a VOX Time Machine. I thought it sounded great. I got rid of it for two reasons, no trails and huge footprint. A super cool small footprint delay is the TREX Replaybox. Currently I use a Tech 21 BoostDLA

Been through a dozen delays. The TC Flashback does not disappoint. Even the mini with Toneprint is fantastic on a small board or as a ‘one song only’ effect (like Flight of the Bee) that doesn’t take up much real estate on the full size board.

What is your budget? What type(s) of delay are you looking for? There are a ton of amazing options available no matter what itch you need to scratch.

This is a good necrobump, new stuff always coming out. I'm still liking the Nemesis and I use it after distortion. But I want to put another delay in front of distortion to get that sound occasionally. So it can't affect tone too much if at all and must be quiet. I'm having my old Deluxe Memory Man modded to move the power supply outboard but it still might be too noisy (and def affects tone) for pre-OD. AJ uses a DD3 or DD5 but I know my DD20 makes a clicking noise under high gain.

I've owned most of the old reliables, Boss DD3, Ibanez EM5 echomachine, real vintage EP3 echoplex, out of all of them I enjoyed the real echoplex the most but it was noisey needed alot of maintenance. For a simple single pedal the EM5 gets close to an EP3 as well as the El capistan.

So.... all that being said for rack quality like delays with great algorithym models, ease of use, flexibility, stereo/mono routing, layered delays you cannot go wrong with the Boss DD500 version 2.0. I use the SDE3000 and echoplex EP3 models the most... both sound excellent.

Boss DD-3 for sure, it sounds better than the DD-7 even though it has less features. There's just something about the way it tails off that is very natural compared to most other pedals that I've tried.

It's tried and true...

This Nigel seconds, mine sounds better than a DD-5.

Just recently got the Free The Tone Future Factory delay for a guitar demo, best sounding delay pedal I've ever heard and has the sound quality of my TC2290 rack delay, pretty amazing!

Still rock my damage control timeline - I’ve only added a pcm81 but don’t believe the delays are as good as the timeline.

I prefer analog/tape to digital and after trying them all I ended up with the other old faithful (along with the EHDMM)

Maybe I am just simple but any sort of delay sitting behind the core sound works for me. I like my flashback and my DE-7 but dd-3 is a classic too and has been on Schenker's board forever as well as on/off Lynch's board over the years. That says something. I also think racks are a great option. I bought a digiverb for 45$ and it has a cool echoplex setting. The only real concern is what can be put in front of an amp if you don't have a loop.

Been thru a ton and settled on the og Carbon Copy in the loop. Just works.

Update since 2015. The Source Audio Collider is now my favorite delay.
