There's a big difference in building a clone for personal use than building one to sell for commercial profit with your own company name on it .
If you want to mud sling then you should call out C3 amps because that's exactly what they did .

If this were true, then buying something on the used market would also be wrong. As that takes potential money away from the manufacturer. When you buy a used amp from the classifieds, the original builder sees zero dollars of that sale. So why don't you go buy a new one so the manufacturer can profit? Your argument is a classic business dilemma. But there are some holes in it.

No money has been taken away from Soldano. I have never purchased anything from Soldano. And I never planned too. If I hadn't built a clone of the SLO, I still would never have purchased the real thing. If I turn around and start selling SLO Clones to other people who might have purchased the real thing... then yes, then I would be taking sales away from Soldano. But building a clone for myself: nope.

In fact, that scenario actually happened. A forum member (might have been another forum) started selling SLO Clones under his own brand name. He's not around anymore because there was a big shit-storm about it.

But let me be clear: I'm not criticizing the fact that Blades amps are amalgamated copies of other amps. I'm 100% fine with that. It's that what he's doing... and what he said he would do... are two different things. Do you not remember what Billy Blades said when he first came on these, and other, forums? Really? Your memory is that short?

Let's say i went out and reverse engineered the Coca-Cola recipe. And I announced to the world that I was going to share it with everyone. For free. And I make grandiose claims that Coke is evil. And their recipe shouldn't be a secret. Because I hate Coke or some other inconsequential reason. Then a month later, after bragging about my awesome Coke-making abilities, I turn around and start selling and hocking "Moke." That's what's happening here.

Billy saw dollar signs and changed his tune. And that's fine. I'm totally fine with that. But don't pretend that's not what happened.

And what H3000 is missing is that I'm not even talking about copying! That's his own interpretation of what my point is. Because I'm not talking about someone copying a circuit. I'm actually quite ok with that. I'm not talking about lost sales to whomever Blades' designs came from. I'm quite ok with that too. That's business.

What I'm pointing out is that in the beginning, Blades said he wasn't going to start selling those designs as his own. He said he was adamantly against it. He ranted and raved on numerous forums about it. But, that's what he has done. He reneged on his intentions. That's all.

I have no emotional investment in this topic. But it's being discussed and I found it interesting. H3000 and TrueTone and some others seem to have some kind of stake in the whole thing. I don't know why. It's all quite silly really. These are guitar amps. You'd think we were talking about Foreign Policy or something.

I also just want to say that building a clone of the SLO has made me respect Soldano even more. It's a beautifully designed amp. I have no desire to sell amps, as building them is just a hobby for me. And I have a full-time career that is already quite enjoyable and lucrative. Plus I don't have the skills necessary to actually create a design of my own. I'm not an amp designer. But I can follow a set of schematics and solder ok.

And the Framus Cobra is to Mesa Rectifier is to SLO is to a JCM800 is to JTM45 is to Fender Bassman is to RCA book. None of those things are original when you look at the progression. But they are all quite original when looked at in their own light. Because if you compared the Framus Cobra to the Fender Bassman, you'd have no idea they were related. That's real progress. Copying and stealing is how it's done. It would be ridiculous for someone to claim the NASA Space Shuttle is a rip-off of the Wright Brothers' first wooden bi-plane design. No idea exists in a vacuum. But there's a great book out there called, "Steal Like an Artist," by Austin Kleon. Says it all better than I could.
