Build quality.....Old vs. New

Yes Dousie the amps both sounded wonderful when they were working correctly. Peter, I did email you and my amp is going to Atlanta. The reason I posted this is because I looked inside the Herbert to check things out and noticed the out of place solder joints. That is what this thread is about. The differences in appearance between the new Herbert and the old one. Now that we have solved that issue (Thanks Angelika) we can move on to getting the amp fixed. This has nothing to do with tubes, tube sockets, trolling, Diezel hate, etc. It has to do with the out of place solder joints. The amp has not been working properly basically since I got it. After opening it up and looking at it I thought I would start a discussion about the attention to detail. Again this has nothing to do with tube sockets or broken amps. Build quality people...build quality. Everyone and there mother that has seen those pictures knows that looks like shit. Why are you people still questioning me?

Like I have said about ten times. This has nothing to do with anything other than the pictures I posted. The broken amp is already getting taken care of and I thank you a million times over for that Peter. I started this thread because I thought it was an interesting topic. The whole Diezel camp retreated into its shell and jumped on the defensive from the word GO. This being the 2nd time that has happened. Dousie I know you remeber the first. For Gods sake I had to post pictures of my rig to get you to believe me. I just want a fixed amp for the love of god. THATS IT!

(the only person besides you owning two Herberts is Berni, thats why)

The only reason I have two is because the first one stopped working.

It is a prophylactical rescue thread in case HCAF has a meltdown one of these days :D

Yeah, unfortunately, but we went thru that 6 weeks ago. I was thinking it was fixed before christmas . . .

On a separate note, having checked this thread and the "related link" out, did Terry (aka Duolos) get the boot? If so, I'm sorry to hear/read that - he was nothing but professional and ultra-helpful and accommodating in my dealings with him.

Peace,
V.

PS - Yo Pauly...good call.

Not that I am aware of.

PS - Phew!! That woulda made me feel kinda crappy... You're all good in my books Braddah.

V.

Well after a few failed trade attempts and the holidays I am finally ready to get it fixed. Having the working one has made me put it off this long.

this thread makes me even more leary of buying used amps again in the future - unless I know for certain it wasn't modded/messed with by someone other than the manufacturer.

How could you be

I bought it NEW, and if it DOES turn out to be modded...then that's really saying something.

I was speaking more of in generalities about amps that get passed around to many different owners. In this case, it appears it was not the case with this amp. I wouldn't be concerned buying an amp if I knew and could trust the people who owned it prior to me.

mraajr,

You are sending the amp to Atlanta or are you bringing it there yourself? I live in Atlanta and I assume you're talking about Andrew's Amp Lab? From what I hear, he does good work.

Hey, I am sending it not taking it. That is the place. I too have heard good things.

Hope it works out for you. As far as this thread and the ones on HCAF, it's not that I (and most likely others) do not believe you or want to help you out with your amp. It's just your behavior and the fact that you post here and then cross post over at HCAF to start drama leads to, well.... drama. You seem to have gone out of your way to be conspicuous, rather than handle the situation with a little more tact.

In any event, good luck. I may be paying a visit to Andrew's Amp Lab in the coming weeks, myself.

Ok ..... picked up my wife from German school and had a beer.

So let´s have a look to the "new build quality" Mraajr is asking
for:
This is a Schmidt built by my wife before wiring. The board is
assembled and soldered by her. Every amp is working perfect
from the beginning and looks great. It´s phenomenal that the
sound is 95 % the same on all units.

This is one of the very first Schmidt´s which has a small mod
on the preamp and a big mod on the phase inverter in the background.
We did it like P-2-P but it´s a very tight construction.

A Herbert built by Angelika

Some pics from the workshop

Mraajr was posting replaced resistors with ugly area.
If we or any tech replace a resistor for any reason,
we cut it from the surface of the board and resolder
the pads. This and the solder wire on the new resistor
causes some fluid around the solder pad. Sorry we didn´t
remove it. Another hardship is the new lead free solder
wire.

I would like to invide Mraajr to our workshop.

Good night ..... Oyasumi,

Peter

You did not have to convince me. Now that we know what the issue was it is very obvious why those joints look the way they do. Now what do you think is wrong with my amp? At first it was just the 2nd and 3rd channel cutting in and out and if it was on a stand it would be fine. Now after moving it from one place to another the 1st and 3rd channel do not work and the 2nd channel volume does not work.

I just want you to know I am not here to start anything with you Peter. After seeing the pictures and knowing yourself first hand the quality of your product you must understand my cause for concern. Even still they seem a bit sloppy but I do not care how they look I care how they work. I amalso not saying that is what is causing the problem. I jsut want to find out. I can take detailed pictures of everything.

Hi Peter!
Do you keep history of every amp that's been in for a repair or mod?

The previous owner of my VH4 (2002) said he dropped of the amp at your place some time ago and I'm just curious what's been done to it.( I think the midiboard is from 2005...)

Can I send you an e-mail with pictures and serial?

Take the amp to Jeff Andrews and we will find out the issue.

Thanks,

Peter
