I will write more about the Dunlop MC404 CAE after spending more time with it.

The built-in MXR MC401 Boost/LineDriver is really nice and different than ones on other Dunlop wah pedals.

Currently my mind is more in a modern sound. So less in the vintage direction of wah.
Thats awesome! To my ear buffers wake up a wah pedal. When I take my buffer out of the chain I can tell there’s a little less life in the wah tone.

Still becoming familiar with the internal trim pots on the CAE MC404.

Think I might pick up a JP95 next.

Late to the party but my $0.02- I've had less than 10 wahs, but the Dime wah is my favorite by an order of magnitude. Both at home & in the band it's just perfect.

Fulltone Clyde Deluxe is the best Wah I own. On my smaller "grab n go" pedalboard I have the Crybaby Classic which is very nice as well and ticks a few boxes for me i.e. true bypass and Fasel inductor. My only complaint in regards to the latter is the sweep of the pedal is too narrow, I wish it "Wah'd" just a bit more.

In my closet I have the Crybaby 535Q which is very nice as well and also a VOX Reissue which sounds great but sucks tone.

I mainly use Wah pedals in my classic rock cover band, when needed. However, sometimes I will randomly step on them for effect, usually mid solo etc.

The 847 definitely needs to be modded to be true bypass. I’ll never understand why they didn’t make that a feature for the modern era.

If you want it to “wah” a bit more you can up that vocal resistor up to 68 or 100k and to counter balance the brightness go from a 470ohm bass resistor down to 330ohm.

Those reissue Vox wahs can tone suck. I believe they have a buffer in them? If you remove it, and do a slight increase in the input resistor you’d get a better result. You can also include the mods above for a more lively wah tone.

Have a Wilson Effects modded Ibanez wah, fantastic for really anything.

Go for the JP95, it is awesome! 😎
Finally picked up the JP95 yesterday. Sounds good with the amp overdrive. Clean amp it is kind of harsh. I messed around some with the internal trim pots. Lowered the volume a bit.

Do you have any advice on setting the internal trim pots ???

Vox U 847
Back in the 90’s when selling wah’s it was pretty much Dunlop. Morley and Vox 847’s. Consistently liked the Vox but hated its tone suck in bypass. Once they’re modded to true bypass just a great wah.
Before I worked retail I had a 1st gen Bad Horsie that was actually a pretty good wah. Especially for hi gain. I loved the spring loaded, switchless on and off.

I’d have tried lowering the volume as well. How about cutting the high freqs a bit or playing with the Q value?

I love wah pedals, and been fortunate to find some really cool ones since 1999.
I used to have 42 wah pedals at my former studio. From the most basic new production to an original 1966 Grey Vox(pre Clyde McCoy). All available for the clients to use during sessions.
Since I no longer have the studio, I've downsized to the 15 wah pedals pictured below. With the more modern ones on top and the vintage ones on the bottom.
Each one of them has its strong and it's weak point. I love them all.
But if I must pick one, the MJM Ulisses Wah, the one in between the Fulltone Supa Wah and the EMS Remote Wah(EMB reissue-like the one used by Slash and Hammett during the 90's). That MJM wah is, by far, my all time favorite wah ever. Including the expensive Pete Cornish, the rare Vox Grey and the sought after Clyde McCoy Picture and Script wahs.
The sweep on the MJM is the best, and the vocal quality of that circuit is just insane.
I'll try to make a video doing a good A/B of all those pedals sometime soon.

Friend of mine gave me a new 535q 9 volt a few weeks ago he got in a trade. He didn't like it.

Anyway I hooked up the 535q, CAE MC404 and JP95 so I could directly compare them.
The JP95 volume is + 6dB. Each of the six EQ bands is + or - 18dB.
Pulling back the volume and EQ bands I was able to get it more in the output range of the other two wah. Q was set at noon. I moved it up between 1 and 2 o'clock. I need to spend more time with the six band EQ to get the balance I want. Being inside the pedal setting them is a pain in the ass. But since it covers so much range worth it.

The voice is really throaty and different than anything else I have used. Extremely vocal and vowel sounding. Definitely unique.

My three favourite wahs in no particular order are BMF stock board, Friedman and the Dunlop JR. I’m currently using the JR purely due to space on the board. I’m interested in the Petrucci model.
