Guys who play out (or used to)…question

How many guitars do you typically bring?

Roll the dice with just one?

Main ride and a backup?

7 Strats with different pickups that the audience can’t hear?

Just curious. Usually just two for me but I’ve got the itch to go partial rockstar and bring 3 or 4 😆

My problem is that I don’t ever even use the second one when I bring two. And yet, I want to bring two LP’s along with my Wolfgang. And also wanna hear the rampage in a live context so maybe that too 😆

Depends @Bxlxaxkxe

For a cover gig or originals?

For my original bands it's always 2 - one main guitar and then one as a backup

For the cover band it varies wildly, but generally 3-5 depending on how many tunings and wildly different tones I need

Ideally, I prefer having at least one back up for every main. But the band I play in is located across the country so I have to fly there to practice for shows/tour or whatever so I just bring two in my Enki, and our current tuning setup has us using one guitar for most of the set with the drop pedal for tunings, but there’s a few songs that are in a totally separate tuning that requires a different guitar and scale so I just bring each of my mains for that and share an all-around backup with the other guitarist. Worst case, the regular main can go down to the other tunings in the event there are issues. But I generally keep my strings fresh and my guitars routinely maintenances, I rarely have any issues that are guitar-related. Patch cables are generally the only thing I usually have to keep an eye on.

If flying wasn’t an issue every time, I’d bring 4. Backup for each.

An interesting question would be how often have y'all ever actually needed a backup? I remember once having the volume pot go out in a Jackson V and I pulled the pots from our backup bass at a gas station and plugged in a $5 walmart soldering iron on the side of the building to perform the operation. Left them in for the rest of my ownership of that guitar. Sorry, PLX :ROFLMAO:

I feel like a break I string at 25% of my gigs, so, I do haha. Just so I could quickly unplug and go again.

My preference is two; main & backup. I tend to dig in pretty hard, especially while playing live, so broken strings happen.

If it's a slower paced show, sometimes I'll switch guitars mid-set just because.

I've played in bands where we used multiple tunings & needed a ton of guitars on hand to make that work. It was a total nightmare, I avoid those scenarios at all costs.

I use the backup every 4-5 shows probably.

Generally it's because of a string break, but once in a while there's been other issues
