James...that was the coolest thing EVER! I'm so glad I was able to be part of it, thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into it....you rule. Like you said, this will be referenced for YEARS to come. Plus, everyone there was so cool and it was just great getting to meet everyone and hanging out.

Your '71 Marshall was DEFINITELY my favorite! It just slayed, I'd love to hear it next to my Marshall B.E., just to see how different or not they sound from eachother. I also loved the new XTC, and both Soldanos. So much great stuff, it was unbelievable.

And for the new "dad-to-be"....HAPPY FATHERS DAY! Relax and enjoy your first one!

Back atcha daddy-to-be. More people have commented on my P90 Paul that you setup and put the humless Fralins in. I think Dave wants one. Also people have asked, it's just a GC bought new Special, nothing vintage, I think they go for about $500. Great guitar, it cuts without being harsh.

You have a Fathers Day to man. Gotta think of the next event, maybe something at the end of summer. I'm so busy at work and I have to start concentrating or it'll be back to ramen noodles for me... I do miss those days though...lol

Peace

F me I am still totally burnt. Thanks James

Maybe it was the Absinth martinis.... :D What was the name of that place again?

James when I left at 2:30am I was so freaking tired yet I did NOTHING except sit, listen and take the occasional peek at the girls next door ;)
I got home and my wife said your a freaking nerd. I nodded and said yes but.... I had soooo much fun. I am so happy you pulled this off, you kick ASS. BTW Dave did you drink that last beer?
Dan great job as well.

I cannot tell you how cool this was. I think you guys should get an award for doing this and id shake each and everyones hand who was involved in this shootout if I could!! You guys    :rawk:

Ralph

It was insane..... insanely awesome!
James, Dan, Dave and everyone else involved rock!
Thank you guys so much. It was fun and cool to hear and see all those amps right there in one studio room.
When James played Unchained on the Jose Marshall it was all right there! All he needed was an MXR flanger and he would have been EVH!!!!!! BTW that amp is the brightest amp i've ever heard. Insane that the amp had the presence and treble on 0.
My favorites sitting right there in the room had to be
Friedman amps - James' 71, 76, the hippie and marsha. Those 4 just destroyed and were so huge sounding.
5153. Great for a production amp.
Jose Marshall...unchained all the way.
and Dan's 74. The classic Marshall on ten sound.
That being said, all the amps did their own thing and represented themselves well.

Thanks again guys!
- Brian

Yeah Brian I see you stayed to the very last amp LOL! It is weird listening back with a semi clear head I didn't know if my choices would change listening back but pretty much the same.
Friedman 71' sounds amazing then and now.
Marsha sounded fat.
Was surprised by the Recto rack pre. Really liked this for what it does. Optional sound mixed with a Marshall.
Still digging the Egnator... a lot.
5153 clip basically concludes that I am not selling that amp!
Engl Screamer good for lots of saturation.
XTC I dug the lead, chewy tone on leads
Angry Hippie eye I especially loved for the Telecaster lead.
I thought the Jose for being as Dave said not the best Jose was very good. Really good. Unchained was right on.
Would of loved to have heard the 800 with a SD-1 or some other boost out front as that would be the norm for higher gain stuff.

Great night

tribute to the mighty Bruce B. and the legions he and Paul spawned!!!

i saw them at the waters club, the country club during the taping of their live album, jezebels, the whiskey, the roxy...at least 5-6 times and never got tired of them

these guys were like crack for gtr players into the LA scene in the 80s man! lunatic fringe guitar playing, in harmony no less, on a bed of killer :rawk: molten metal tunes and just a super talented band...while the rest of the world was oogling on steve vai, the LA scene was feasting on these maniacs and thinking "steve who?"

JL if you don't learn scarified while you are taking lessons from this legend, you will no longer be able to call yourself an american! :salute:

James,

After you get a few days sleep can you point me to the video that has my MOD100 on it playing. I saw it and you were about to demo all they Modules (SL2, EG5 and ERECT) but then it faded out

We probably stopped filming if it faded out. Damn, I didn't even think that it was yours and you would have wanted to see it. I will double check the video session. What vid # was it?

The Egnater rocked, we all loved it. The first mod was our favorite, kind of modded Marshall/Soldano. Great amp man. I remember the notes gluing together real nice with the first mod.

I just downloaded them all and toggled back and forth on my stereo at home. So many of the amps sound great. The '71 just destroys me. That recording was with the Presence on 2.5 and Treble on maybe 6. The Jose is a little smaller and a little slicker sounding, it could be the brightness of that amp. The '76 and '74 seem to have the most meat of the Marshalls. It seems like the '71 sits between the 76/74 and the Jose. For fun, I'm gonna experiment with upping the high end and cutting lows and mids on the '71 and '76 and see if I can get the Jose sound with them.

The other amp that get me going are the; Marsha (would want one if I didn't already have 2 Friedmans), both Soldanos, Mesa Boogie Dual Rec (2 ch) and the Bogner XTC. I absolutely love the voicing of the XTC, just sounds right. The Boogie is definitely on a way different trip but that's what I like, it really gives a different look at the sound. The Soldanos just f**kin' rock! They were both so much fun and so easy to play. If I add another amp to my collection it may be the XTC.

You couldn't go wrong with most of these amps.

Just listened through again, using iTunes to just keep hitting the same section at the end with all the amps. The '71 is flawless. My favorite of the day. It's also fun to play and looks cool. It's articulate without being stiff like some modded Marshall are. Friedman really crushed it when he modded her, he put the whole 'Kitchen Sink' mod, so she real versatile too; Brown Eye, Custom45, Hairy Brown Eye.

James you need to do a Vintage amp shootout next!

get some really nice Fenders, vox, two rock, a dumble maybe?, victoria, etc etc and some nice strats, teles, les pauls PRS, etc

that'd be sweet!

Hats off to you and all the guys that worked with you to pull this off! I came home from my gig sat. around 2am and wound up in front of my computer till 4am watching the first five videos. I was exhausted but couldn't quit watching!!! All of the amps sounded good to me but the 71' and Marsha were just awesome! XTC and Soldano's killed as well and the 5153 sounded surprisingly cool. Way to go man!

James, thanks so much for doing this/posting this, man!

Your '71 Super Trem is just outstanding. Just beautiful.

I also loved the Bogner 20th Anniv.--sounded great!

My favorites were:

'71 Marshall Super Trem
The Friedman Marsha
Bogner 20th
Soldano SLO
Egnater MOD

Lotsa great talent in that room!

5:54 of video #7.

What a great day. It started off with the best pizza Ive had in a long time.

James and Dan did such an incredible job with everything from the playing, to the production, just insanely well done. And can James sing his ass off or what  I got that 30 days song stuck in my head

I would love to give my opinions of the amps. But unfortunately, im not in a position to do that :(

I will say that Dave Friedman's Marsha was pretty much the best sounding Marshall type amp Ive ever heard in person and it recorded fantastic. I think the next event should be a MONSTER GAIN shoot out. Where we REALLY crank up the gain, throw in some really tuned low guitars along with standard tuning and we can CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA away. Ill talk to James about it

Damm, wish i could have made it, sounded pretty EPIC.

The clip of the Mark V kicked ass especially when the Goldtop LP started playing. Was that just the combo or did you hook up a cab to the combo and mic that?
