How many of you believe the Earth is flat? Go.......

Even gravity creates an even surface. The surface is measured to the center of the earth, so all across the ocean is basically the same distance from the center of the earth, hence smoothing sailing
That doesn't have any bearing on it though that I can see. It doesn't eliminate the curve on our globe earth model. Even on a perfectly flat sea, there is still curvature in this model, because the ship sails over the horizon, or rather, dips below it as it disappears from the sight of the viewer over the curve.

Thinking a little more on it....since the boat is not stationary like a viewer, the downhill run is only 6 or 8 inches per mile. So you ARE sailing downhill, but only ever so slightly, and not at any rate you could perceive with your senses nor any amount that would create any measurable additional speed since a boat hull experiences significant drag to begin with.

100 miles is not a “long distance” relative to the alleged circumference of the earth. And accurate is a relative term — the note says the calculation is nonetheless “practical.”
According to some of the calculations I came across the accuracy of 8 inches per mile squared is greatly reduced without referencing additional factors into your equation around the 100 mile mark. Maybe because the earth is oval or pear shaped, or whatever fantasy shape the are choosing to believe in.

In the model you are never really walking downhill because you are the same distance from the center of the earth and thus the same theoretic gravitational pull. Everything is relative to the center of the earth.

I can't grasp that. I brought up sailing downhill because water finds level. I built the foundation to my shed using a basic carpenter's level. With globe earth theory wouldn't my level actually provide me with a very slight curve in theory? It's 12x16 so wouldn't technically there be a small curve since in globe earth water can bend? Everything about it become contradictory.

Well my phone is about to die and my wife is pissed im not watching the Steelers game. If you don’t want to take my word for it, maybe take his.

I think it covers your math formula too

You better get your butt in there then!

The refracted light discussions confuse me even more because it would seem that could cause all sorts of misguided perceptions in terms of shape. I had watched a couple videos discussing this but it's been a few years. I'll try to see if I can't maybe dig them up tomorrow.

This guy is such a douche, but his dog is cool. Tell me, space boy and Mr. D with a cool dog, what is the formula that accounts for the height of line of sight? There is a formula, and it still wouldn’t account for the fact that we can “see Chicago.” He won’t address that and turns to refracted light, mirages, etc. This tactic is known as muddying the water.

Maybe watch it again. He listed several variables that would affect it, so your hopes for a formula are useless

Im on the couch next to her, I’m just not paying much attention. They choked anyways.

Let some light refract through your eyes and dig in

Yep a plumb bob points right at the centre of the Earth no matter where you are. Funny about that.

Also I'd point out the Earth spins clockwise when viewing the South Pole from space. Most people would say that a spinning spheroidal object's top would be in that orientation. Even if that's a bit like asking an Irishman in a circular room to go and sit in the corner.

True, but I'm leaving for my cabin on a 3 day weekend and I'm not going to waste it sitting on here arguing with you cats :D

Later,
Hey have fun man, that sounds like a great weekend. I can't afford a cabin to vacation in so I just built one to live in, lol.

Don’t believe those lyin’ eyes I tell ya!

This is atmoshperic refraction. When you have a cold mass of air, above the lake and a much warmer mass of air above it, the speed of light travelling through each section of air changes causing this 'magnification' of distant points.
I saw this once looking across Lake Superior. Saw an island in the distance but it turned out to be much farther than I should be able to see. Freaky to say the least.

Are you a duluth/superior/two harbors area guy?

Spent a lot of time over there. My mom's family lived there. Used to love Grandma's marathon time of year and the bayfront blues fest.. Park point and watching the ore boats roll in and people out sailing on the lake. I love that north shore ride.

From Southern Minn originally. Used to take family vacations up near and on Lake Vermillion as a kid. North shore is amazing. I once found an Agate on the shore that was like 20 lbs.....wish I had it today.
