Hey Josh, I'll bite...it's been a LOOONG time since I've spoken to Mark, and I do wish him well (and always have).
I first met Mark back in 1997, when he was working in Huntington Beach at a place called "A&V Music". Griff Hamlin was the in-house teacher at the time, and before and after my lessons I'd hang with Cameron. He was making mods in the back of the music store literally in a shed out back, and playing that beat up Randall 412 with the mahogany body, super strat he had from high school.

He did one of the first VH mods on my 1981 2204 and put in a tube-based EFX loop as well (all pre-goop) mind you. Tone-wise it was Bruce Bouliett (Scream) and Akira Takasaki (Lighting Strikes/Hurricane Eyes), which were tones I really dug back then.

Later on, I had him do a Jose mod, EFX loop, on a 1959RI (PTP) with all of the volume boost and resonance knobs on back. I also a 2203RI with the Aldrich Ocean mod.
So as of 2003/4, I think I had 3 Cameron heads modded, and was seeing and talking to Mark regularly. I read in this thread about Steve going over to Mark's storage unit (aka: his house at the time) and seeing how Mark was living. I felt the same. I also experienced the same "come over/it's not quite complete" several times, only in my case it was OC to LA, so add an hour to the commute one way.

At around 2005(?) when Mark had established a relationship with Tone Merchants, and his name was becoming associated with a great mod (and rightfully so), I had lent him $$$, and he left one of his original JMP2203's (KT66's I believe) with me. I had that for about a year before I was repaid - but it was in "kind" (e.g. I had Mark mod out another head :D   ).

I would lose touch with Mark eventually, as many of you have. However I did witness the emergence of the "Cameron Amp" brand at NAMM 2009(?) and was there when Meniketti was demo'ing the CCV and CCM. IMHO, the tone of those amps were/are different from my 1997 and early 2000 period mods (not better or worse).

I continue to wish Mark all the best...and there was a story of us catching the Atomic Punks in Fullerton right around the time Brian Young replaced Bart Walsh (Btw Brian was playing a MB Triaxis preamp at this show, not sure what pwr amp he had..but the tone was fucking amazing!)

It saddens me as to what has transpired over the years since I was close to Mark. I wish him and everyone involved in his work/business all the best.

Just for the record - I'm in South OC as well and was driving from there to Sun Valley, so I feel your pain… :D

Hi Steve - yikes!
These days, driving from Newport Beach to anywhere north of the 605 causes me quite a bit of stress...even for gear
Even getting to NAMM in a couple weeks - with all of it's appeal - is gonna be a commuting "chore" (getting really lazy these days!)
best,
mike.

I'm surprised there are so many OC guys on the boards here. We still have a few Cameron cabs left if anyone is down for a local pickup!

Newport, huh? Sweet! I'm over in Mission Viejo..

My last job was in Santa Monica, but I just drove up on Tuesday after traffic and stayed in SM Tuesday and Wednesday night on the company dime and then came home around 1PM on Thursday. Worked Monday and Friday from home. Not bad if you can pull that schedule. Going up to Santa Monica every day would have been impossible...

Luckily, we sold the company and now I work from home!

Finally and interesting blog that ill be happy to jump into.

to answer the first question.

Im a retired police officer with 20 years experience and have been testified dozens of times as an expert in narcotic influence recognition and I am a court certified Drug Recognition Expert. Having worked very close with Mark for about 6 months, I can honestly say I never once saw him under the influence of any type of illegal drug other than marijuana. Mark at no time displayed any objective signs of stimulant or opiate abuse or influence. Now his reliance on red bull is a little troubling, but whatever its not illegal.

Ohh. I can answer that. Absolutely not. Except he does like his weed. Aside form that, no. And he smokes it legally as he has a medical card.

Glip

Have you ever actually met Mark? And if you have, how much time have you spent with him?

No.

I believe Mark is manic depressive, and probably some other shit, but he's not a meth head, or crack addict.

He does like his weed (which doesn't help his motivation), but I think the crux of the issue is depression.

It really seems to render him incapable of functioning, even to survive.

Pretty astonishing, when you see it first hand.

Well put Josh. I spoke at great length with Mark not only about his physical health, but more importantly his mental health. There were times when I went to his house where I was really concerned. Brad and I did everything we could to try and get Mark help and Mark while he would acknowledge his problems would outright refuse to accept help. I must of said this a dozen times.

"Mark, do you realize that if you get on the right medication, your whole world could possibly change for the better."

It bums me out, but this is a fact. He seems so debilitated by this that he can't summon the energy to work.

Stepping away from the ripoff horror stories, which I have no personal experience with, Mark has always been a nice guy to me and a good dude to hang and chat with, but I would also be bummed out whenever I left his place because of the miserable conditions he was living under and the overarching depressive vibe I got from him. He helped me with troubleshooting my original PlexRod prototype and even figured out and fixed a small problem with the switching that I didn't want to waste the time to figure out at the time because I was already on to the design of the Cherry Bomb, which is quite different and simplified from a switching perspective due to having two independent preamps. He also (unfortunately) made a bunch of other changes to the amp when he took care of the switching problem that I never wanted him to make. I think he thought he was doing me a favor, but I liked the way the amp sounded better before he made the changes and wished he hadn't touched it. It was kind of a nightmare getting my amp back from him as well. There were times I would be driving up to his place when he said it would be finished and he wouldn't be answering his phone, etc. then finally he'd call and tell me he wasn't done. Then I'd just have to drive home (sometimes 30 miles or more into the drive) - this happened a few times. Honestly, if I hadn't been (somewhat) local I don't know what would have happened.

At one point, I was also told that Mark was telling people that he designed the Cherry Bomb, which is much different than the PlexRod, which he also didn't design but did mess with as I mentioned. Mark has never seen the inside of a Cherry Bomb, nor was he involved in the design process or seen the design docs etc. This pissed me off and so I confronted him about it at one point, but he indicated that what he said had been misunderstood and he was just commenting on the fact that my amp has a somewhat similar control layout to a CCV. Since I wasn't there when he said this stuff I gave him the benefit of the doubt, but who knows really. The Cherry Bomb is nothing like a CCV from a circuit standpoint, nor does it sound like one for the record. Two different amps, both excellent at what they were designed for (IMHO :) ).

At first, I thought he was just lazy, but it quickly became clear to me how depressed he is and how crushing it is on his ability to do anything. It's a bummer, and truthfully, tough to be around, which is why I haven't really been hanging with him for a few years now... I honestly just don't have time for negativity or drama in my life and I choose the people I hang with accordingly.

Steve

I asked Mark about the Cherry Bomb and he never took credit for designing the amp. I believe he did say he helped you with a minor issue and that was the extent of it.

Steve- totally agree.

People really don't get the third world conditions dude lives in; I've seen people claiming Mark lives well off of the proceeds of his business. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I wouldn't wish his existence on anyone.

When Mark is well, he's one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. I've seen him help people (including me) at no cost, and with no strings. A real give the shirt off of his back type guy. When he's not well, he's paralyzed, and that's when all the bad shit happens.

I truly hope dude can get himself se help, and find some peace.

For what it's worth, the only thing I've ever heard him say about the Plexi Rod, was in regards to the switching.

Perfectly articulated Josh and pretty much sums everything up

Yeah, Mark and I are cool on this issue as I said. For the record, as I also said in my post, he helped with a switching problem and troubleshooting with the PlexRod, which was a prototype and a very different amp than The Cherry Bomb, with completely different switching. Mark did not help me with any issues, major or minor with the Cherry Bomb. I did work with a great PCB/mechanical design guy on the Cherry Bomb though and I've said that all along...

Hi Josh! :2thumbsup: yeah it's been awhile - and your post on Mark Cameron kinda made me sad as well. But I'm very happy he's trying to improve his situation - or at least that's how I was reading it...
Best to you as well - hopefully you're in possession of a few good Andersons! I've gotten down to only a few now, one of which is a DT7 - it FUKKING SLAYS!
best, mike.

If you don't mind me asking, is the lack of activity on the Cameron Facebook page a sign that things aren't going well? Last post mid-June and now it's a ghost town. I was hoping things had been worked out with Brad and Co., and that something positive would materialize.

All activity on the Cameron branded amps that we were producing has been on hiatus since last year. Everyone who ordered a Cameron amp from us got an amp or a refund if they didn't want to wait for it.

To our knowledge Mark and a few new "partners" were going to build amps again under the Cameron name in direct violation of his agreement. The right to build them notwithstanding we knew based on our experience that the new "pirate venture" would not end well.

We have been monitoring that situation and it looks as if it has now stalled out which was in our opinion inevitable. Rob, I and Dave have plans to release all of the Cameron designs that we have the rights too under a totally new amplifier brand with a tentative name of SoCal Amplification.

Details to follow as it develops.

Brad
