does lars just sit there the whole concert facing one direction?? kind of an awful stage set up :dunno:

LMAO, I love these threads, all the geniuses come out in full force to show how much better they know everything about tone live than big mick or James. Also, as it was stated, their tone has changed drastically over the years, and it ain’t because of the axe fx rigs. You really think they couldn’t get closer to the tones they had in the early 90s and late 80s if they WANTED to? With, or without the axe fx? Some of you are seriously close minded. The band that rigged their own FOH every single night for 2 years on a world tour, that has the best of the best of everything, all the resources on earth, couldn’t get closer to their album tone if they wanted to?You people kill me.

That video posted sounds insane, I’d love to hear any of you sound that great AS A BAND live, I’ll wait.

Metallica is my favorite band and I've seen them twice, once on the Black Album tour and in 2018 or 2019. I was planning on seeing them in October of 1986 in Germany but we all know what happened there.

Both times I saw them, it was a letdown compared to some of the other shows I've seen. The Black Album show was in an echoey chamber called the Hampton Coliseum and could barely make out the songs. The last time I saw them "Hardwired..." started and when the inteo stopped and the music started, it was so low on the volume, I could talk to my friend without yelling or leaning in. The sound got better but just was missing something.

My benchmark has been my first hard rock show in 1988 and still hasn't been outdone. Cinderella opening for ACDC and me and my best friend were against the railing, front row center. Deaf for a few days, sweating like pigs and arm's length from Angus. Is still the top.

I agree that they sound amazing in that video. I have seen shows where the sound was phenomenal but unfortunately I had two shows that just didn't have great sound. I do blame the venues a bit because both were arenas for sporting events and just a wash of noise.

And that’s totally fair, no doubt about it! If they are guilty of anything it definitely can be inconsistency. But the, “ their tone isn’t as good because…..modeling” is not a thing, and never has been. Also, a lot of their shows by the time we hear them on YouTube etc are HEAVILY edited as well, but I don’t really think this video posted is at all. Sounds fucking killer to me for what it is. Bass tones are huge too.

i saw them in 2000 with Slayer, Slipknot and a bunch others at giants stadium and it was just awful, every band sounded so good and killed it that day, then they came on and yeah it was hard to even make out the songs it was so bad lol. AC/DC ball breaker tour was my first big show too, but we were second row center, we got covered by angus' sweat all night and i still cant hear right from that show lol

the double bass editing they got caught out for recently was fucking hilarious, the editor had to be laughing as he "corrected" the parts into sounding like a robot

Please someone show me Metallica having great digital tones over their tube rigs. Or the best live examples of great digital tones.

If you can't get a good tone with the $$ resources they have and those Fractal rigs then it's on them or their guitar techs.

I do agree that in the vid Drucifer posted the tone is kinda meh...but if they like it..who are we to tell them otherwise?

I a using my AX8 at practice full model into a Marshall 9005 rack power amp into a 4x12 with Texas Heats and Manowars and I am loving the shit out of the tone I'm getting.

Crap mids, no chunk, no balls (n)

But hey, why sound like this when you can save so much on transport costs?

That way the "saved costs" can be utilized for re-recording, re-amping, overdubbing, re-mixing a "live" recording.

And, how many years have they been using Fractals live? It's been going on for a good long while.

They can sound good. I just personally feel the 81s sound better for Metallica. There is a “splat” vibe instead of immediate.
I have a few guitars with the Het set...I have to say that the classic 81 in the bridge still does the best job for these types of tones. the Het bridge is overly thick in the bottom end and presents as bloated at times.

?

since hardwire there is something in their guitar sound i can't stand. i don't think it's the modellers. it's more like they are not using real cabs anymore or something?

Honestly their hearing is probably gone. I haven’t been a fan of their recent tones either. Axe Fx or otherwise.

Those tones sound like garbage, whatever theyre using ?

I haven't liked their tones since they played Marshalls though ?

While it’s subjective, I can give you a dozen eras of Metallica where their tone was garbage live with real amps as well, so what’s the real problem here? I’m just trying to wrap my head around how everyone thinks Metallicas tone now is complete garbage, so it must be the fractals fault. Surely it couldn’t be just, the tones they dialed in with them? And the same people who say they sound like complete shit, could never tell the difference between a digital product and a real amp ever live or recorded. Everyone here knows I love the axe fx but look at my signature, I am not a digital only fanboy, I’m just calling it like I see it. You have to be incredibly small minded to think that the reason Metallica’s tone is garbage is strictly because they use a digital product. That’s horseshit and we all know it.
