Wasn't the downside that it was practical because there were only two stationed in germany, they took about a day to setup, and the Russians targeted them the whole time?

One thing's for sure, if they had it in place and in range, it'd be a shitty day for any armored divisions trying to roll through the Fulda Gap...

LOL... Nah, it was just my way of referencing Vlad's statement about women "owning" the vagina. I have been paying on my
wifes for 25 years now. Maybe the interest is paid off and I can
start working on the principle!

I hadn't a clue what that thing was but it looked big enough to
launch a shell with a tactical nuke!

Yeah man, if I'm watching TV, I pretty much live on Discovery, TLC, History, Science, or the Military channel... The Military channel's odd for anyone that knows me, I'm a fairly chill, peaceable fellow... but, I love engineering, guns, and blowing shit up. :D A walking paradox, who knows. :)

Yeah man, I've got a Browning hunting rifle my pops bought me before I was born... It was from the last batch he and his friends saw from the Belgium manufacturer before they switched production to China. It's one of those things I don't like to take out and use too much because it's so nice. It'll throw a .243 range down range with the best of them though. :)

Yeah......Atomic Annie was not a very good idea but the Army felt like they were being left out of the atomic age and wanted something.

Here soldier......I want you to set this thing up and fire it 30 miles downrange........................... :aww:

On my aircraft carrier we had the CIWS aka "R2D2" chain driven guns that used depleated uranium rounds...one time during an exercise the radar unit started to track the tow rope that was towing the now destroyed drone. about 50 more feet and the tow vehicle would have been shredded

Hahahah, classic Vlad.  You know, if you double the payments, you pay a lot less interest. :) See if she's up for that.

Yeah, I just wish laws didn't have to be so strict... I don't mean anyone harm, but a good Saturday to me would be to get out to a deserted area, throw a couple back, and start blowing s**t up.  ;)

I was a kid when I first saw those and wanted to try a Phalanx SO bad. After going through enough Controls classes and such, I always wondering how well those tracking systems operated with friendlies around.

Surprise attacks > making useless noise that reveals your location.

BTW, I'm going to disagree about those shoot-me lights. I personally dislike them as they give away your position in a fire-fight. Hence why I call them "shoot-me" lights. :D I can easily see the pros and cons of them, but I prefer to not use them. Lasers are pretty useless too, as you can only zero them in for a specific range. They won't be that accurate when you're closer/further away from the target.

If you buy a tactical light for your weapon, be sure to use it properly. Do NOT leave it on all the time. What you want to do is quickly turn it on and off, scanning the area. Be sure to be random about it as well. If the bad guy can see a pattern to your scanning, you're in trouble. You also want to be sure you're behind cover, yet changing your area as you scan as well so the bad guy cannot possibly see what position you're in.

We're talking about home defense against some scumbag intruder, not jumping into some sort of "Predator" like situation. Different ballgames. Chances are there's no fire-fight to be had, chances are as soon as said scumbag realizes someone is there, moreso if they know you have something there that will kill them, they will run their ass off leaving pretty much all their "loot" behind and not harming anyone. It's scumbag psychology.

Most situations end without a shot being fired. That is the desired result in a home defense situation. If, after your surprise attack it is revealed that the guy was shot from behind, or the guy had no weapon, depending on the state you're fucked legally. In my state I would have to show that I had no way of even running away from the situation before I could legally fire my weapon. I cannot legally defend property, which kind of pisses me off. Anyway, if it appeases you, the Surefire lights I mentioned run almost entirely via momentary switch, which still makes them a good candidate. But if anyone doesn't properly check their targets because they're taking your advice, one of these days they're going to shoot someone they shouldn't.

That said, I also advocate people learning how to tactically clear their homes in the proper fashion. It certainly makes things easier on their end when they're thrust into a situation like that... kind of a go-to plan for when the shit hits the fan.

I'll also add that you shouldn't keep a loaded gun near your bed. In addition to what you described it is very bad to wake up, grab a gun, and shoot. In both cases many people have killed their own family member. Think if you have a teen that "snuck" out when you didn't know it. You wake up from a dead sleep when you hear something, grab your gun, and shoot the "intruder" that you can't recognize because you're either still half asleep or can't see your target.

That's more up for debate - you certainly don't want to have it in a different room or something, because a scumbag thief WOULD find it. I know a lot of people who have had their guns stolen, if nothing else...

I keep my pistol with a loaded magazine in it, no round in the chamber, hammer half-cocked with the safety on. I can pull the hammer back, trip the safety, and load a round in between 1 and 2 seconds, but someone unfamiliar with the gun would have to mess with it for a bit to figure out why the slide wasn't pulling back... haha

I also don't have children though.

That's not so bad. Having a gun "ready to fire" next to the bed is not good though.

Eh, I'm leery about having a gun "ready to fire" even when I'm awake. Too much can go wrong. Half of that is probably the fact that my particular gun only has a safety due to import laws in the US, and therefore it only works about half the time.
