OT:Pit Bull attack

I have a yellow lab male around 92 lbs. I was looking at his canine teeth just last night and messing around with him some. Play biting etc. He could really do some damage with that weapon of a mouth he has. I have seen him go thru a t bone in seconds. A good bonding with the human owner is critical for a great dog personality. The lab breed is usually gentle and that is thier reputation as a whole. Pit bulls do get a bad rep for all the things that happen with them. Hope you and your dog recover 100% .

Wow...that is fuckin rough! Glad no one was shot or killed. I know the owner of the pit was heroic, and that was cool....Is the dog detained now?
The dog has been put to sleep :( but it could no longer be trusted

It does hurt John but in the end it was the right thing to do and this comes from a dog lover and fan of all breeds. My vet has one Shephard that has to come at closing time or the entire waiting room has to be cleared out it is such a strong Alpha dog. I am lucky that mine is a good Beta that has a backbone but also has been trained to listen to her masters.

Thanks for all of the well wishes, Goldie isnt doing as well today as she has been. Lets hope its just a bad day.I only kept my head due to the many years and courses I have taken on tactical firearms training. I must admit, I really thought the biggest threat to me and my family would be the 2 legged kind and was a little unprepared for this event. I really could have used my tactical shotgun at that moment but unfortunatly that wasnt what was in my hand at the time.I have revised my strategy for dealing with threats and a shotgun will defenetly be part of my "toolbox" in all future events (hope there are none).
I really cant warn you guys enough to keep both eyes open because when shit goes down the tubes it happens in seconds, not minutes.
I do beleive without that pistol in my hand Goldie would be dead. Even though I didnt shoot, it in itsself was a great striking tool and weakened the Pit just enough so I could pry its jaws.
One of its teeth went right through my fret hand middle fingernail and it is going to be a while before I can play comfortably again  BUT damn I got off easy for sure...................John

Again thanks for the thoughts for me and my family, you guys are the best..........

I wont shed any tears for that beast BUT it was a very unfortunate situation and the fact that the dog didnt tear me or my kid apart means it had some restriant and some good in its heart........

Man, that's rough. Glad to see it didn't turn out worse. You always bring in some interesting stories to tell, though. :) If I had the gun and was put in that situation, I'm not sure I'd be able to restrain myself from firing. The stuff those pits can do is gruesome....

I'm sorry, but I don't think the owner of the Pit was "heroic" at all. IMO he did the MINIMUM that he needed to do. Why were his dogs even out? He has 2 dominant breed dogs, and they're out loose? They should be behind a fence with flippin razor wire on it. I hope Goldie turns out alright. I'm glad you didn't have to shoot, because that would have had the potential of causing you all kinds of grief. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad the owner helped out, but those 2 dogs should have NEVER been out. My fiance wants to get a really large dog that can be a dominant breed. If we end up getting one it's going to be the most passive out of the litter, and it will NEVER be out in public without a pinch collar and leash on it. Dogs are dogs, and I don't blame them for acting like dogs, but you better be able to control that thing or you shouldn't own it. I especially don't like owners that get dominant dogs and bring them up to be aggressive. Dominant dogs don't need ANY training on how to be a gaurd dog, or protector. They'll do this on their own, and if you "train" them to do it more, you'll end up with a liability on a leash. /rant off

This is my question as well, why were his dogs running loose?? Did they just happen to get out?
Two other things occur to me: 1) would that dog have attacked if your dog had not been there that night - 2) supposing it would have attacked anyway do you think it would have gone after your kid?
Just thinking about it creeps me out. I'm glad that you and your family are for the most part ok. Scary ass shit indeed. Best wishes for your dogs full recovery man.

Hey if you get a large breed you really don't want the most passive of the litter. The problem with a passive dog is that if you get one that is overly shy or perpetually scared, you'll have way more problems than from an aggressive dog. An aggressive dog can be controlled with consistent firmness, a scared dog will be quiet and retiring and then bite for all the wrong reasons. They tend to feel threatened for no good reason and will "defend" themselves.
Just my two cents.

Yeah I mis-stated when I said "most passive." I was trying to make a point mostly. I realize you don't want a fearful type dog anymore than a dominant one. You want a more middle of the road temperment-wise.

Thanks bro,
"would that dog have attacked if your dog had not been there that night ?" Question I have asked myself a dozen times. My instincts are No. Since the pit never really turn full attack onto me (or my boy) even when I was beating it to death(or trying to)seems to tell me that this pit had an issue with other dogs/animals.
You guys need to understand that if that pit wanted to it could have eaten off my fingers, if not hands. I got VERY fucking lucky 4- sure.......John

I am just sick of pussies that go out and get tough dogs thinking that somehow makes THEM more of a man. I see it all the time these little punks bragging about how "badass" their dogs are. I have small problem with the breed, BUT its the fucking owners that burn my ass most...............John

I was just basically saying that Erik did everything he could post attack to make things as right as he possibly could. This issue has left us closer friends then we were pre attack for sure.He HAS taken full responsability for his negligence..........John

Yeah I agree with that. Certain dogs are more dominant and prone to biting than others, but in the end it's the owners that are a mess. I saw some medium sized dude the other day walking 2 pit's who were pulling him along, and I was just thinking what a mess that was.

There is a scenario I also see all the time. The other day I saw a little hottie around 23 or so walking a pit that she couldnt control even when it was being mellow. She has NO business walking or even owning that breed.....John
