To me it stops being a “tribute” and becomes something else when it turns into a stadium sized tour and paychecks. A one time show is a tribute, a tour is a money grab

Yeah right. Vinnie went to his grave refusing to ever speak again with Phil, let alone reconciling with him. In his mind, Phil was partly responsible for his brother's murder. So no, he would most definitely not approve of this and furthermore, fuck Zakk for his constant, "the brothers are looking down smiling at this tribute" bullshit.and I would bet that Vinnie and Dime would approve of this and be happy its being done.
Just for the record, best skit everI got no problem with them playing the material but I wonder if figuring out who to play guitar went like this….
“Hey, who are going to get to replicate one of the most brutal, direct and cutting guitar tones in popular metal?”
“I know, let’s get the guy with one of the softest “heavy” tones of all time and I think we can get him to throw in some chorus for free!”
I like in the interview how Charlie was all about replicating the Vinnie experience, even setting up the drums in a way alien to him, to get him into the zone of Vinnie’s style. Meanwhile Zakk is like, why bother, every player is going to sound like themselves no matter what they do yada yada so I’ll just use the same rig I’ve used for 35 years. That guy is so locked in to his sound, style and look, it’s like unfrozen caveman lawyer but a musician.
Zakk just seems like the nicest guy but god damn, I’m not sure he’s had a new creative thought since 1998.

Wow, being there to see Pantera come up and become a musical force that changed a genre of music must have been fucking amazing!Let me preface, I am 53 and was there at the inception of Pantera. Grew up in Fort Worth and spent every weekend in the clubs before Phil even came in the picture. Can’t even begin to think of how many times I saw them live.
I have no desire to watch this or go see the current “Pantera”. Mainly because I was there for the real deal. But not because I am butthurt or have an aversion to cash grabs. I hear that phrase thrown around constantly.
What’s wrong with a cash grab? This is their profession. And how much of this goes to Rita and the estate? Maybe I’m wrong, but wouldn’t she have to sign off on this?
Judas Priest didn’t start calling themselves a “tribute” when Halford left……nor now that Downing and Tipton are gone. Same goes for numerous other bands that had defining or signature members move on or pass away.
FWIW, though not the heart of Pantera, there are still two people from the classic line up involved. Let them have their cash grab. And let the newer generation experience the songs live.
Swing a virtual dead cat and you’ll find 10 kids from 7-17 nailing Dime’s playing and tone in their bedroom…lol But that goes for every guitar great. If there’s a guy/gal who spent 30 years becoming an icon and master, there’s a 9 year old from Riffshredistan who can play all their parts perfectly….Wow, being there to see Pantera come up and become a musical force that changed a genre of music must have been fucking amazing!
I totally agree with everything you said in your post. People get so possessive and judgmental when it comes to something/someone they have love for. Understandable, I'm guilty of it myself. I'm totally on board for this iteration of "Pantera" getting out there and touring. Yes, they're making money. No, not all the original members are involved. But there's also tons of fans who are stoked on hearing Pantera songs being played live and loudly literally all over the world.
My only critique about any this that is happening about Zakk Wylde. To be more precise his playing. There's a portion of this interview in the beginning where Charlie is talking about doing everything possible (drum set up, triggers etc...) to sound like Vinnie Paul. Zakk on the other hand has fallen way short in this respect. There are countless videos out there of him playing Dime's solos "his way" one might even say "wrong". Like way wrong.
I remember about a month or so before they started touring someone asked Zakk if he'd been practicing for a while and he laughed said that he hadn't ever started. I don't know if it was laziness or the inability to play Dime's solos (I doubt it was a lack of capacity) but I found it disappointing to see that be the case. Here we have one dude stepping into a position that requires a lot to pull it off and did the work and another dude not doing that. Not only that, SO many people are defending Zakk saying things like "he has to..." or "of course he's going to put he's spin on it". It doesn't square with Charlie is saying (they all seem to agree with what Charlie is saying) and it's plain ol' bummer. Zakk Wylde can most definitely play those parts if he tried or wanted. The man is killer guitar player, no doubt. Just a bummer, that's all. But let them play. Let people thrash and rock out. That's all haha
To be honest I don’t know much of the history of Pantera, so I guess I was wrong about that. I didn’t know the band broke up…I thought they were doing their own solo type stuff on hiatus from Pantera when Dime was killed. Now that I know this, it does seem a bit weird the two surviving members are touring under the name.Yeah right. Ya I have not thought zakk is doing the solos Justice . It’s not that he’s changing them at times he just sounds unusually sloppy at times . Like it’s chaos . You are pardoned. Pantera history 101 is a subject that is sorely lacking in the schools of today’s educational curriculum. To be honest I don’t know much of the history of Pantera, so I guess I was wrong about that. I don’t know if you’ve followed the KK Downer drama on Blabbermouth but the guy seems to be an insufferable twat. I know I wouldn’t want to spend my twilight years in the company of such a contradictory complainer so I don’t blame the Priest camp for rejecting him at all.Judas Priest is an altogether different cash grab. KK Downing wanted to rejoin the band and the bassist, Ian Hill, rejected his overtures, probably on the advice of lawyers.
I mean, can you believe it? A bassist who didn't write any of the Priest songs gets to keep out the guitarist who made that band what it was? And who are his replacements? Andy Sneap and Richie Faulkner. Tipton is still there, but for what? He doesn't tour anymore because his hands shake. What a load of BS.
You can bet there are a lot of lawyers involved in the Pantera reunion as well. I doubt people like Rex (based on his book, which I'm hearing of for the first time on this thread) and Phil have a lot of love or respect for the Abbott brothers.
They're just like vultures drinking the blood and eating the marrow of those tragic SOBs while their carcasses are still warm and they remain in the public's memory.
Sloppy is the perfect word to describe what I’ve seenYa I have not thought zakk is doing the solos Justice . It’s not that he’s changing them at times he just sounds unusually sloppy at times . Like it’s chaos . I was shocked
You’re probably right on the moneyid be willing to bet the only time they actually practiced together was the day or two before the tour when the crew gets together to set up and tear down the set a couple times preparing. zakks "spin on it" is a wonderful attempt to make us believe him not playing right is by design lol

It’s really odd . Zakks improvs were so clean beforeSloppy is the perfect word to describe what I’ve seen
Priest may have not referred to themselves as a tribute band after Halford left but without Halford Priest is not Priest and anybody with an ounce of honesty will tell you the same .Judas Priest didn’t start calling themselves a “tribute” when Halford left……nor now that Downing and Tipton are gone. Jugulator was fucking awesome thoughPriest may have not referred to themselves as a tribute band after Halford left but without Halford Priest is not Priest and anybody with an ounce of honesty will tell you the same .
YaI can’t call them Pantera without Dime and Vinnie.
