Pantera Reunion on Beato

Yeah, they probably should have called this tribute something else but I can see why they didn't. I have to admit if it were not Zakk and Charlie playing, I'd be pissed. Those two are more Pantera than Phil and Rex in a lot of ways.

This is how they're saying it:

They could have went with Pantera Inc, Friends of Pantera, etc, but nope. Even without changing the name they could have changed the logo to reflect this is a new version but again, nope.

It’s a fuckin’ sign! Seriously, the words “Friends Of” above it would have made all this better? The fact that 2 of the most important dudes in Pantera aren’t on that stage or even alive isn’t obvious enough?! How much hand holding is needed these days? Like someone has to come out before the show and tell the audience “Hey guys, this big sign here that says Pantera might be confusing, just so you know, the two guys who everyone loves so much from this band aren’t here anymore, so they got their best friends to come out, are you all going to be ok with that?“

Is there any single human on this planet that is actually confused about whether or not this is Pantera? Would the words “Friends Of” change anything about the music coming out of the PA or the people in the audience enjoying the show?

Edit, actually, I should temper myself. I was livid when I realized David Gilmour didn’t move to Australia and start the Australian Pink Floyd. I saw the lasers and stage set pieces onstage, assumed Gilmour was up there though it didn’t quite sound like him but when I finally realized David Gilmour hadn’t gained his Australian citizenship and started a new Floyd, I was livid.

You just don’t get it man. Dime and Vinnie WERE Pantera, and the name ”Pantera” should RIP with them.
Furthermore, Vinnie said countless times he’d never speak to Phil again, much less play with him.
There’s a thing called integrity that Rex and Phil have proven to have very little of over the years.
This is an obvious cash grab, and that’s fine, but call it something else FFS, because it’s NOT Pantera.
You’ve made it clear that you view this as a tribute, not a reunion. Name one tribute that takes the name of the band it’s honoring…
Would you be ok with DLR and MA touring under the VH moniker without the brothers, or Page and Jones touring as Zeppelin without Bonham and Plant, who said he’d never do it? Both would be sacrilege and this is no different...

I couldn’t give a fuck what any of it’s called, the ONLY thing that matters to me is the music. This is as close as anyone can get to recreating a Pantera show at their peak, with all the production and the venue sizes.

Not sure if anyone’s realized this, but uh, Vinnie’s gone, so he’s not playing with Phil and is not speaking with him. Vinnie never said Phil couldn’t ever do it and I’d imagine he could have done some legal wrangling before he passed to ensure Phil or Rex never even had the chance to use the name. Or told his family “Never allow Phil to use the Pantera name”, but none of that happened and clearly the family is ok with it since they signed off on it. It’s hard for me to put much stock into any of that, that’s all personal shit between them, I don’t even feel I have a place to comment on it without knowing any context outside of what we all publicly knew, which is probably 1/4 of what actually went on.

For all those other bands, the titles don’t mean a shit to me, the original members aren’t there, I clearly know it’s not the original version of the band. You can look at the stage and see that if there’s any “confusion”.

That is kinda contradictory. It's an obvious cash grab especially because it's named "Pantera". Any other name would have brought in much less money. So if you're fine with cash grab, then I guess it's just the best one they could use.

Pantera INC. would’ve brought in less cash? Tribute to Pantera? Pantera 2023?
Literally everybody I know that supports and spent cash on this “tribute” would have fully known who and what was coming under any other name. People in that scene are in the know.

"Tribute to Pantera" would have brought in less cash for sure. Pantera Inc. or Pantera 2023 would have caused just as much complaining. "How dare they etc.". I don't really see the difference.

Anyway I don't get all the hubbub. I love Pantera but I really don't give a flying f**k if the pope or my neighbor is touring the world under the "Pantera" name. I love Zakk Wylde but I'd much rather hear him play his own material. The brothers are dead. They obviously don't care anymore. I guess Rita is happy about the money. Nothing wrong with all that. That is all.

The titles may not mean shit to you, but they do to many others. And it has nothing to do with avoiding ”confusion.”
Clearly any Pantera fan knows not to expect Dime and Vinnie to be up there. Only a dipshit would think otherwise.
It’s about the integrity of an iconic band, their name, and showing proper respect to the founding, and most integral members who passed away tragically, and far too early. Especially when it’s an obvious cash grab such as this.

And as far as Vinnie approving of or condemning Phil’s use of the name, I’m fairly certain of the latter, considering he said he’d never speak to or play with Phil again…

No it wouldn’t. Any Pantera fan would know exactly who was in the band, the material they’d be playing, and would have gone regardless of any name other than Pantera if they cared to see this version of the band.
On the other hand, I know many people, myself included, that would never go because they call themselves Pantera.

Right, the brothers are dead, so fuck em, do whatever with the band that they named and founded, who cares, right?

People like "us" of course would not confuse Pantera 2024 with the OG. But there's going to be a ton of young little dipshits in the audience (especially when they're opening for Metallica) that'll think this is the revered Pantera of old. When they hear this, which is musically ok but far from great, they'll wonder, "THIS is the legendary Pantera"? Get it now?

Sorry, no, I don't get it. You care about what the younger audience thinks about Pantera ? 😴 I'm slightly upset by the newest AI generated Beatles tune but frankly I don't really care.

Who is everyone talking about cuz it ain't Pantera by a mile, I seen them many many times.

If there were any brains between his Viking ears (I watched the interview), he’d start up Pride & Glory again…

Oh, they’re all aware of who Dimebag is. To them, he’s the guy in the NAMM video who said a slur to a white dude and should be canceled posthumously.

When I was 11 and my dad took me to Floyd, he didn’t need to tell me Roger Waters wasn’t onstage. I don’t know how much of Floyd’s history I knew at the time, but when I dove into the records on my own after becoming a fanatic, there was zero confusion over who I saw and who did it originally, well before any internet was around to give me all the information I was looking for at the touch of a button.

I mean, I can almost understand taking offense by proxy for Vinnie (Dime was ready to reconcile with Phil at the end), but being concerned that some kid in the audience is going to get confused that Zakk Wylde was the original guitarist for Pantera has gotta be on the lowest rung of the ”It’s not Pantera” ladder.

Unless people just think they’re randomly paying tribute to some buddies they knew back in the day?

I think it was a great idea. See, now we have a new topic to bitch about. I started getting tired of the "Metallica died with TBA" threads.

The thing is, is you have people saying in comments and in interviews that this is their first time seeing Pantera...You even have Phillip onstage asking fans, "How many of you this is the first time you're seeing us?" "Us" being Pantera. Makes no sense. That isn't possible because Pantera ceased to exist on December 8, 2004. That's like seeing Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony in concert under the moniker "Van Halen" and saying you saw the actual Van Halen live. Makes no fucking sense.

I watched a bunch of recent live videos and I gotta say that Phil sounds as good as ever. Zakk is trying his best to simulate Dime's vibrato but he's no Dimebag.

Also that ML wannabe purple guitar doesn't fit the act at all IMO.
