The closest Metallica got to using a III was on "The Shortest Straw", you hear that distinctly shittier tone on that song? That was done with the III channel on a Quad pre-amp.

i always heard this and never paid much attention, listening now though it is just not as good. i wonder what the reason was for doing this?

Shortest Straw was originally intended to be tuned down to D standard. They probably thought the Quad/400 setup might be tighter for that tuning. Ultimately the song ended up in E.

Yeah it’s definitely grainier/grittier than the rest of AJFA

I'm guessing they didn't want the whole album to have the exact same tone, for variety. On MOP Hetfield just changed his settings a bit to get a slightly different tone, like from Battery to Master Of Puppets, the title track has a darker, thicker tone to it, while Battery is brighter and thinner. "Disposable Heroes" has gotta have my favorite tone on that album though.

grittier and just not as "deep" sounding. if the whole album was like the shortest straw would i like it any different?? probably not. like i said i never even really noticed

yeah disposable heroes is the best, i really gotta cover that with my iic+, ive done it with pretty much every other amp i have except the real deal lol

I love the justice tone . So much . And dimebag . All the tones people say suck lol .

What stories has Ed told about his gear
Yet, Hetfield said in a 1991 interview with Guitar World that he used the same Mark II that he’d used on previous albums. Wouldn’t that be the most credible source of information? Was he lying? Did he forget what amp he’d used to track guitars just a few months earlier? Or did Bob get it wrong 30 years later?

How many stories has Ed told about his gear over the years. He lied about everything all the time!

We think alike. I love Dimebag's tone to, especially on FBD and TGST.
I love lots of different tones . It’s amazing how many great tones are out there . Like brain stew by Green Day .not big on the band but that tone is huge

Hating on dimebags tone is a guitar forum thing more than a real life thing. I mean who puts on VDOP and says “this dosent sound good” with some sour ass puss on their face?? No one I’ve ever known.
I think it started because people thought it was all solid state . Then they learn wizard is a huge part of that tone . I do think it was SS bias even though tubes amp on his albums was very prominent
