I am thinking I would go SL2 and eventually I want a Mesa Boogie module and hope they make a new Mark series module. Sounds like you can get fairly close to the EG3/4 with the SL2.

I thikn when I bought my MOD 50, the previous owner let me try the Deluxe module but I found I liked the clean more ont he B Man channel A - thought it was more pure. I also love channel B. Eventually I'll get the T/D.

T/D = SRV to The Edge
DLX = My Fav for the clean to the light Grit (from the Police to the Edge)
VX = Beatles/ Stones / Edge / Queen / Petty / George Harrison
COD = Modern Power Pop Music/ Rush (in the 80's) / Steve Lukather / Jeff Beck / Edge / Johnny Marr
BASSMAN= Zeppelin 1 / JET/ AC/DC a la Bon Scott/ Early Clapton/ Cream/ Allman Brothers
SL = Hendrix/ Zeppelin 2 / Zoso / AC/DC Back In Black/ 70's Clapton / Skynyrd / Pumpkins (Gish)
SL2 = Guns N Roses (Slash on Appetite For Destruction)/ Green Day / Blink 182 / Pumpkins (Siamese Deams) / Badmotorfinger
MHG = Alice In Chains/ Jane's Addiction (Nothing's Shocking)/ Zakk Wylde (the good stuff)/ Motley Crue Dr. Feelgood / Weezer / Foo Fighters / Superunknown
EG3/4 = ANYTHING and EVERYTHING thick and creamy -(my overall "Best In Show" module for ALL the modern rock stuff - a superior tone all over the hard rock map) :rock:
EG5 = VH 1978 - 1984/ Dokken/ Randy Rhoades / George Michael / Pet Shop Boys... just kidding :lol: :LOL:
ERECT = Nu Metal/ Detuned Riffs / Metallica (Black album on)

This is a great tool thanks!

As for the EG5. I notice you show Van Halen only in the Roth years which I guess is basically the brown sound.

Would the EG5 cover the Sammy era as well? Or should I be thinking of a different module?

Bump!

EG5 will do the Sammy stuff...it was all SLO from Ed so the EG5 has a bit of that vibe in its design! Ask litkey he has an slo that just collects dust since he got the EG5!

Jeff is right. The EG5 is actually closer to the Sammy era VH than Dave. The SL2 is a little closer to the Dave era.

This is definitely right. I know I should sell my SLO and I will soon I think. Just been too busy with all kinds of crap since Im closing on my first house in 2 weeks!!! If anyone knows anyone looking for a mint SLO with Depth mod, let me know!

So if the MHG is out and the EG5 in!....what would be considered the modern high gain module for modern high gain tones? The E-Rec? EG-5? Maybe some new Mesa mod on the way? I love the EG5 though and can get all sorts of things out of it. :yes:

EG5 is our modern high gain module. MHG will be custom only from now on and the E/Rect is what it is.

Rich, is there something you'd expect from a modern high gain module that you arent getting from EG5?!?

I agree w/ you there Matt. I could not imagine needing another module for high gain than the EG5. (well that's minus the Super COD when they get that rolling!)

Eric

No, I love it...plus I can get pretty close to the MHG is I want it! Not exact but close. Either way, I want modules that work in a band context, so the MHG had to go. Like I said, I can get close enough. I love the EG5, plus it is so versatile. I was pulling off Led Zep with it the other night with the guitar volume rolled down.

I think I would be set with the EG5, SL2 and super COD for all my high gain desires. LOL. I have never been a big Recto fan so these will satisfy. I like my high gain to be more hot rodded Marshall, Soldano, Bogner, so EG5 is perfect.

Man, I still need the SL and T/D. :no: :D

I have a Erect dual and have it sounding,like my Mesa MK III. CH. A I Barely have the gain on,just enough to get sound out of it and the vol is at about 3 o'clock.Nice clean tone with my strats and my LPs ,if i roll the volumes back on the LPs between 3-5, above that it starts to get that dirty blues edge. I dont really like the Mesa Recto sound,im more of a Fender Deville(not hotrod),Marshall jcm800,Bogner metropolis,Mesa MKIII type of guy. Anything i can play jazzy blues to heavy metal on. :D :rock: :thumbsup:

I would expect less of an over the top 80s metal tone. After all I was expecting, modern. ;) :D

The problem is the excessive gain. Even a buddy of mine sold his due to this issue. I don't know how you guys make it usable with a band.
I would love to see what tubes John uses in his EG5 since his tones with hectic Watermellon are great.
For modern high gain, I expect a bit darker, and not as 80s or so insanely over the top. I shold have kept the MHG because it worked great it
certain scenarios and with a one guitar band. It had its place. Maybe I can find a person to trade for an EG3/4 or MHG.
If only Eggie had a high gain Mesa module that was not the Erect which to me is one dimensional! No solo tones.
since I use ther MOD 50 I expect rhythm and lead out of one module and the ability to get moderate and high gain from the same module as in
channel A and B. The Eg5 is TOO out of control. I might try to cut the gain down 40% with a Mullard 12AT7 in V1.

The 5881s with the EG5 still turned out to be scoop city! I went back to EL34s.
You wold think it would balance with all the aggressive mids in the EG5.

I just have the stock tubes Jeff shipped it with. Do yo have hot/aggressive pickups? Have you tried another guitar? When I record it, I make sure to use a mic on two different speakers, because one speaker is out of control bright (the Wizzard), and if I had two of that speaker in the 2x12, it would be just too much high end for me. I keep the bright off and adjust the presence to get that nice balance between sizzle/edge/cut and whomp. In the end, nobody says you have to like it. If it's not working for you, that's all there is too it. Everybody's got a different perspective on what you want.

I tried the 5881s again today to see if that was why I as not liking the EG5. Everyone swears by this module with the Tung Sol 5881. I still wasn't digging it. So, I thought let me reinstall the Sovtek 12AX7WAs that Jeff sent with the module. I did that and man, I am loving it again! It really sounds so crisp, clear, detailed, no mud, tight, responsive, and just great! I was pulling out AC/DC to VH to Alice in Chains with ease o this thing and the gain never went past noon. It sounds clearer and more controlled with the Sovteks, that is so odd! I never thought the preamp tubes would have THAT much impact. I guess they tweaked this sucker with those tubes so they are staying.

End result Sovteks in the EG5 using the Tung Sol 5881s in the MOD 50, for whatever reason rock. I don't have the gain issues as before. There is a ton of gain there but at about noon I find it to be tone heaven. Like a totally new amp from earlier this week and earlier today.

Do you guys know the difference between the 12AX7WAs and WBs?
