What were people buying in 1986.

1986 = my first brand new electric, an Ibanez Artist AR105 (still have - badly in need of a refret) and Marshall JCM800 4210 (sold a couple of years ago - wish I had back, actually). Dollar was pretty strong in Germany at the time (where I was stationed). Both together cost me about $600 brand new! Those days are gone forever :(

I get the feeling I'm one of the youngest people on rigtalk.
How old are you? I'm only 16.

I would've thought Ibanez would be higher on that list

I'm 26.

I'm just wondering what amps Peavey made at the time that were over $500???

Don't worry man, I'm not that old either, I'm 20 :scared:

I'm guilty of buying several products back in the day from the companies on those lists (Kramer, Charvel, Gallien-Krueger, Boss).

Ah, to be young and employed with no bills. :)

True...this is way before the 5150...did they even make tube amps in the 80's?

In 1986........hmm.

I was 16 playing in clubs every weekend, in high school during the week. Playing bass, I had a Spector NS2, Ampeg SVT, 1 - 2x15 cab and 2 - 4 x 10 cabs......playing up against Brent (Gutierrez) with his '72 Marshall Super Lead. Fun times........

I think it was around '86 or 87 that I got a red knob fender "Seventy-Five" combo for my birthday (I was 11), and a used Kramer that somebody had fingerpainted  . I think it was an Aerostar. Total POS. It was $179, I remember that. And a few years later, I traded my saxaphone from the school band for a floyd rose and installed it myself using a hand-crank drill and a yardstick, and painted the guitar yellow. My guitar playing friends all had RG's and Crate combos and I always thought my yellow kramer and shitty amp sounded better!
I had a white Ibanez flying V and a Peavey solid state Stereo Chorus 400 2x12 combo....first guitar and amp that I paid for, was damn proud.

I got myself a Marshall SS 50 watt combo (the 5210 model) and an Ibanez Roadstar around that time. I`m using the combo as a 1x12 cab now, and the Ibby is in parts in the attic

My first "real" equipment

The Classic? The opposite hybrid amp thingy? With tubes in the power amp etc..

The Butcher. It was a JCM 800 ripoff that I thought stil sounded like shit.

My rig in 86 was a Sound City L100 into an Acoustic 4x12, with various guitars, notibly a Hagstrom Swede and a Washburn AV10. In August 1986,that rig was stolen and replaced two months later with a '72 Orange OR80 halfstack, and a Fender Esprit. I also had a brand new Chandler Tube Driver pedal as well.

A question that I have about that gear survey though, is where were people finding Mesa Boogie amps for under $500??? Nearly all the used ones that I was seeing around that time were still selling for about $700 to $900. New Mk 3's were selling for around $1100 - $1300.

1986 - I had a Kramer Pacer with the blue/red flip-flop paint (still have it), a Peavey Butcher half-stack (still have the cab), an MXR Distortion +, an MXR 10-band eq, and a BC Rich ST-III in pink/black crackle (wish I still had it).

Good times!!!

Single pickup jackon with maple neck and Kahler! I used to love that setup back then

I can sell you one, if you are interested......

In 86 I had a 69 Super Bass, a 72 Super Lead and 2203 from 1980 with 6 basket weave 4x12. :)

In 1986 my rig was a '72 50 watt Superlead w/ a Sound City 4-12 cab, Boss Sd-1, Boss EQ, Crybaby, Roland SDE-1000. I had two guitars, '82 Gibson Flying V and '84 Explorer.

I still have the SD1 and Crybaby......the Marshall head blew up all the time, frustrating amp!

Mr. Moneybags!
Right...the total layout for that was about 2500 DM, which at that time was in the neighborhood of 1500 bucks.

When translated to today's cost of living that's about $6000.

All I could afford was a solid state Peavey combo in '87...people laughed at me.

I bought one of these in black.

I know. ;)
I was on the road in my first cover band traveling around in a cube van full of gear and a full PA system playing six nights a week making $200 a week (the soundman, lightman and agent made all the money, we got what was leftover).
If I didn't have a girlfriend with a day job I would've starved to death...ahhh the good old days. :D
