Umm, no...I think...

I have a Columbus, which goes into the XLR on the back. Not sure how the MF-2 works.

You go out of the switchable send of the Herbert into the Xpression input. Out of the Xpression output into the Herberts parallel return. This takes care of the Herbert and the Xpression and all you have to figure out now is the MF-2.

That's only the audio connections!!!

Midi wiring is just like I stated above.

Thanks for the Clarification Jaymz82.

You're welcome :)

I use the cheapest midi cables thomann.de offers and I'm very pleased. Reliable, all 5 pins connected and they simply work.

I've been reading through this post, and although users have touched on the subject, I can't see my specific issue being addressed.

I have a Rocktron Midi Mate and a Herbert, connected via a 7 pin midi cable. I'm unsure whether this cable has all pins connected.

At the moment, the Herbert is not providing phantom power to the Midi Mate.

Can anyone assist me with diagnosing this problem? Is the issue that the Herbert sends power via different pins to what the Midi Mate requires? If so, is there anything I can do with the cable or Midi Mate to address this? Specific instructions would be great, as I'm certainly no electrician!

Thanks

Rocktron sells a 5PIN + jack - 7 PIN cable, lenght 9 meters. You can use that for your Herbert/Mate configuration.

The 7 PIn end connects to the Mate, the 5 PIN to Herbert (or your fx unit) and the powersupply of the Mate can stay in the rack and is plugged into the jack which is attached to the 5 PIN side.

Rocktron uses the outer PINs for PP (1,7), Diezels sends PP via 1,6 and 3,7 - so normally with a "good" 7 PIN cable it should work. Do you have a DMM with a built in diode tester, that can make "beep" when you connect red & black? If so, check if each PIN of the 7 PIN is hooked to its antipode on the other jack. If not: either a new 7 PIN or the one I've suggested.

I actually already tried this - I connected a mic cable to my mixer and switched the phantom power on, then used the DMM to see whether it was picking up anything in pins 1&2. A reading came up. I must admit I've only ever used it for biasing the Herbert, so hadn't used it for this purpose (was just trying what I thought would work). Anyway, I then tried the 7 pin midi cable and nothing. I guess the conclusion is that the 7 pin midi cable doesn't have all pins wired.

No you've clarified the Herbert can indeed send PP to the Midi Mate (with multiple pins), I'm ok with getting a fully wired 7 pin midi cable (didn't want the cost if it was not going to make a difference).

Thanks again to this forum and for the great moderators!

ground control pro costs way too much here in the EU
around 700euro in Italy

for only channel switching (only midi program changes, no control changes):
http://www.advancetubetech.com/eng/op128.php built like a tank, nice look, italian ;-D

or try to find an old Digitech PMC10: there is a user yahoo group, they created a SW to configure everything with a laptop and download it into the pedalboard.
I bought it at less than 100eur, lots of features, like midimate and ground control products.

i just got a tech 21 midi moose - its very good .
well built and accepts phantom power from my VH4 .
its small enough to fit on my pedalboard too ( hence the sale of the columbus ! ;) )

I used the Ground Control when I had a Herbert. It wasn't that expensive, and I used it for my other rack stuff too. The alpha-numeric display was very cool too, something most of the others didn't have. Th display was cool for me, as when playing live, I could see what preset I had programmed based on the display spelling it out.Takes a little time to program, but it is easy.
