Yes. It is basically an MTL but the power amp is voiced like an MC2 and the depth knob is changed to a contour control (since it's a power amp control and that's what the MC2 has). So what I'm saying is tell him to leave it as a depth control. You can either have a contour or a depth, not both.
For sure Depth is a power amp control but is contour as well?

interesting, as I would have thought the bigger tube was more low and high end and more scooped than an el34

That's how I perceive KT88 amp designs...more lows, more highs and slightly less in the middle because of the extended highs/lows. More in the amp design though more likely than the tube....or combination of anyway.

I have a KT88 amp arriving soon...be interesting to see how I perceive it this go around. Seems the old ears are constantly evolving...LOL!

the damn Hybrid is really nagging me - like a constant, annoying siren song in my right ear....

but I think I am like 95% decided on an MC II....now, I just need to decide whether to stick with the 'classic' configuration of 100w EL34 or to roll the dice on a KT88 loaded version....

every once in a while the thought of a 50w EL34 pops up - but I've just always had more luck with 100w vs 50w variants of the same model, so I am not sure that would be the right choice for me

Don't forget that if you go the MC ii route, you can still interchange KT77's for E34"Ls/EL34 etc. I tried it with my MC II and I like it a lot! Possibly might prefer them slightly more but maybe that is just biased to say.

I've sold every amp I've ever owned with the exception of 6. Wizards, Camerons, Diezels, Bogners, Engls, Soldanos, Riveras, Mesas, Fryettes, KSRs, Revvs, Barons, Fortins, Ceritones, Kashas, EVHs, Peaveys, Splanws, you name it...they all get sold eventually. Just because somebody sells something doesn't mean anything. :sneaky:
Do we geteth to knoweth which of the sixith you kepteth

Spot on. I've definitely sold a few amps immediately that I did not bond with, but the dozens and dozens I've sold outside the few duds we're sold for various other reasons and had nothing to do with being unhappy with a particular amp. Several reasons folks sell, even their favorite amps, include...GAS, guilt tripping oneself, or financial issues.
You forgot drug habit maintenance or does that fall into the financial category ?

Cant go wrong with Wizard amps !! They sound tight in ya face and didnt sound stiff.... harmonically richer than any amp out there ya can find...

I've been looking at Wizards lately too.

Has anybody compared the Hell Razor with the MTL?

Didn’t have them at the same time, but I much preferred the Hell Razor KT150 I have now to the MTL and MC I used to have (both 100w EL34 versions)

If it says anything though, I kept my MTL for 6 years and only sold it since one of my Hermansson’s actually slightly outpunched it and was equally open, but then I compared that particular Hermansson to a friend’s Hell Razor KT150 and we both agreed it smoked it, so I sold it and ordered a Hell Razor lol. The price is no doubt very steep, but it’s one of my top 4 favorite high gain amps and my other favorites aren’t any cheaper

That's really interesting. I haven't played a Hell Razor or an MTL, but I have played a Modern Classic and Modern Classic II, years ago.

I remember the MC and MC2 being VERY punchy having a ton of percussive power like a good plexi, but, just like the name implies, they were modernized, so they had more of a wide bandwidth sound and much more gain on tap, but not quite "modern high gain" levels of gain. What they did have, however, was killer clarity and dynamics, touch sensitivity, etc.

The biggest concern I have about an amp like the Hell Razor is that to control all that gain, the amp might need to do some heavy filtering on the guitar itself, like cutting off the lowest lows and the highest highs fairly aggressively, which sounds great for super high gain but could kind of choke the sound out if you were to try and use it with less than "white hot metal" levels of distortion.

Can you describe how the Hell Razor is different than the MC in terms of clarity at Modern Classic levels of gain? In other words, can the Hell Razor do the sounds of the Modern Classic, big full clarity and dynamic punch with a crystal clear top end, or does it more focus exclusively on more compressed modern high gain tones with some of the highs filtered away to control the fizz?
