Back then bands were bands....

Johnny Lang is cooler than the other side of a pillow
Until I saw KWS and Johnny Lang I thought I was the only kid around that age who had any interest in blues. That's how isolated I was up there. I know the old bassist from Fargo he used when he was coming up, he lives in Austin now. Good dude, good bassist.

My biggest problem with considering Country as a legitimate form of music lies within the premise that one has to have a bumfucked accent to perform it. The biggest proof of this is I believe Urban meyer is from austrailia, but somehow has a "Country" accent. And this is all from someone that lives in Texas. I mean. There is some good country out there. But most of the stuff made is very poppy and I think it was the first music to really sell out.
I don't know it was the first, but it is almost certainly the most egregious lol. No disagreement here, which makes it all the more surprising 2024 might put 3 Country cd's in my rotation. That's probably a tie for the last 20 years combined.

I've been largely out of touch with new releases since 2015 or so, save for the odd band I'm into. I'll get stuck on a sound I like and find myself digging through back catologues and similar artists of the past. I'm fortunate enough to live close(ish) to Montréal where there's an amazing scene for every genre, so I'll catch a band I've never heard of almost every time I go to a show there.

There's still great music being pumped out, though. I know Country probably doesn't resonate with too many here, but Sturgill Simpson (as Johnny Blue Skies) released a masterpiece (imo) just a few weeks ago. Sierra Ferrell put out a great album in March. Billy Strings has one releasing next month.

Voivod is still going strong with Mongrain - that dude is a legit wizard of guitar. Anciients from BC released a great album. New Opeth sounds promising.

I'm not a fan of modern production by any means, but that's not a knock on the music behind it.

not a big country fan, but of those still alive and kicking today, HW3, is my country high bar. Few come close for me.

I had to pick a fav genre and band, it would hard rock and Kiss. Fun, good time, party music, not overly complex, and they had long span of years putting out gold and platinum offerings when those levels had real numbers behind them.

I still enjoy more complex music (death, thrash, prog, fusion, classical,...), but it really depends on your goals (virtuoso musician barely making it financially or in a commercially successful band, or somewhere in between) given my current skills (lack of thanks to arthritis and other things to do, and laziness), I'd go toward a successful band playing easier music that's more popular. If I could play like Holdsworth or Petrucci, different story...

We’re in a golden age of gear, not a golden age of music.

I love how we asked for examples of this supposed great timeless art thats being made with these amazing tools

and the examples of IMMORTAL, timeless fucking masterpieces we get are....

Some stupid white bitch plaintively moaning "i wanna fuck you" over freeware tier garage band beats, and some they/them faggot who does tappy arpeggiations of popular midwest emo chords of 2002

WOW DUDE SO INNOVATIVE CAN'T BELIEVE THE TIMELESS CLASSICS BRO

That video was, for me, a perfect example of a generation raised on thinking pornhub is how people are intimate with each other. Don’t get me wrong, I watch porn occasionally (gotta keep the pipes clean, Doctor’s orders) but I certainly don’t take it as a blueprint for real life.

i am kind of surprised that anyone could possibly take that shit seriously as "Art," when it's obviously throwaway garbage for a generation raised on everything being disposable

I guess that's our answer though, this is the paragon of art - some fucking stacy breathlessly intoning "i want sum fuk"

WOW DUDE SO EMOTIONAL MUSIC HAS TRULY EVOLVED, AMAZING WORK

And you're too fucking stupid to read context apparently.

As Skoora said that video was for him, as far as giving examples, I suppose your way of response is a perfect examination of why people don't take forum requests too seriously. You and your pedo clan can go back to raping the sheep!

Yes, judging a generation's work on one song you didn't like is show for intelligence!! 😆

And yeah, nobody believes you don't care for a fuk song at the moment.... everything has it's place.

This thread is a dumpster fire but I'm 55 and really like House of Heroes. :dunno:

But hey, don’t objectify women…..unless you sign up with autopay.

Music has improved?

I'd like to hear a few examples of this contemporary music that's so good that it's better than music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

I don't think it exists.

Or the 1600s
Or the 1700s
Or the 1800s

etc

Actually if anything, music as an art should get worse in the 20th and 21st century because "fuck you" rich people don't exactly commission operas and such for the sake of it anymore. Apprenticeship as a system is also not a thing anymore either.

It's always a panel of businessmen greenlighting the tritest shit in the world just because they need to make good ROI

This thread was always going to be a dumpster fire...And some of us just love to watch the world burn.
When I read that, I just imagined the forum members being a group of Corey Feldman clones but with green hair all shouting in unison "New music sucks! But we secretly enjoy it when our imaginary kids/grandkids blast in upstairs, it ruins our sleep in the basement" then using their imaginary wife's lipstick to spread a red smile on their face 🤣

You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain!

Classically trained musicians have only gotten better through the ages, even without discipline. Again, comes down to the information available, new teaching methods, new devices, new sciences PM music theory. No different than someone here saying "Look at these clowns they have coming out of college and getting jobs as dentists and orthodontists! Like hell I'll let them take the job of MY dentist who has 40 years of experience and has been my dentist for 20 years!!!" And yet, that dentist without any experience is better because of new methods and scientific research into that. It's really no different than music today.

We see more and more younger classical guitarists with more ability, better ear, quicker hands and more precise fretting than has ever been on record before. Like the video that another member posted, they are able to start younger and younger. I'm not saying that a newborn will be able to play out of the womb, but there's no doubt that someday in the far future, there may be some chip implant available for such a baby to recieve all the knowledge of any subject. It's not too farfetched.

I agree with everyone here, the biggest nosedive in the history of music was from 1940's to the 50's, 60's, 70's. We went from having the most complex Jazz pieces to rock and metal.... Less brainpower and education and more drug use "I gotta be high to play this thing". I'm glad we aren't really having that.

I don't know it was the first, but it is almost certainly the most egregious lol. No disagreement here, which makes it all the more surprising 2024 might put 3 Country cd's in my rotation. That's probably a tie for the last 20 years combined.
My favorite era of Country is definitely 90's to early 00's, seems like the purest and most sweetspot years for country and we got to see the rise of country guitar heroes. Pete Anderson, Paisely, Urban, etc.

Late 2000's and 2010's for Christian music and song writing and skill level as well as "feel" hit the height of the genre's history. Nigel Hendroff, Michael Guy Chislett, etc.

You gotta start picking examples that don't make you look like a clown, especially to people who know for a fact otherwise.

Unless that is your goal, which very much appears to be so.

Are you telling me that classical musicians today are worse and that they have the same level of discipline or more discipline of classical musicians of yester centuries? The other member gave you an example of kindergarten children playing classical musicians good enough to carry through and keep up, are you really going to act like an inbred and call me a clown for pointing out the obvious?

You all keep reminding me that this is the internet and this the forum where people can defy logic and pretend it's the other person who's to blame.

Here's a 3 year old who required no discipline playing professionally, yup...

If you're not a father/mother, explains the ignorance. Kids soak thing naturally like a sponge. No discipline required.

If they like, they'll pick it up. And Can use their ears better than someone who's been playing for 60 years.

This is why everybody thinks you're retarded lol

Every single child prodigy has a parent, a family friend or a relative sitting them through and helping them by setting goals and QCing. Every single one. My cousin competed in the maths olympiad back when we were in school and he sure as fuck didn't do that with "no discipline" required.

There's no such thing as getting better with no discipline.
Go to a fucking school, gym, dojo, conservatory, coach, even a fucking esports player if there's such thing as requiring no discipline to compete at the highest levels.

And even if it's so, then how come they don't need discipline now, but back then they did? Is it the fluoride in the water?

Your entire retarded spiel goes in the face of logic and any kind of self improvement. Athletes didn't get better "without discipline", fighters didn't get better "without discipline", strongmen didn't get stronger "without discipline", mathmaticians and linguists sure as fuck didn't get better "without discipline"

But sure, tell us about how music is different from any of those fields.

In fact, you even suggesting it is insulting, and already cues me in that you probably suck at just about everything.

Before you go laugh at me with your inbred clan or return here to call me names, you may want to listen carefully...

Have you ever heard the phrase "IPad baby"? Probably not, toddlers are at a stage that they don't need guidance from a superior when it comes to music and the education of it. They are learning about music by simply listening to it through stories, games, and videos. Even more so are the teachings through YouTube videos on music theory and use of musical instrument. They can hear/watch a video once and not forget. This isn't exactly rocket science, that's why the saying goes "They have minds like sponge".

No, kids don't require goals, in their minds at 3 years old, they are not thinking "Where am I going to be in 30 years?" Or even "I have to get this song down to impress my parents!" I can really tell you don't have kids, kids will see something they like and naturally be drawn to it and they are VERY good at mimicking them without any teachings. You may find that unbelievable but that doesn't mean it's untrue. We do have kids doing and learning things that kids could not years ago and that's due to tools and research available. It's simple. That's why a 3 year old can now match someone who's been playing professionally for decades.

Grown professional athletes who require a gymn trainer and nutritionist who use hundreds of pounds of weights in a home or public gymn vs a toddler playing a near weightless instrument? I'll let people do the math on that comparison and they can figure out who's retarded. You're taking apples and comparing them to oranges. Art cannot be compared to sports.

No, kids don't require goals

See I was about to get mad that you're intentionally equivocating again (if you have done anything close to self improvement, even with kids and especially prodigies, you'll know I meant short term goals. IE. homework)

But I already know you're literally trolling.

Isn't this you, OP?

Yeah, it is.

Are you sure you wanna continue with this retarded "hello fellow old people" skit?

Where are the mods even?

Maybe you should take technical improvement more like a sport, OP. That's what every classical pianist, cellist and violinist I know do. Might help you.

Maybe some practice discipline would actually help you play your favorite songs within weeks would be a better use of your time instead of hitting a blunt and trolling people on forums.

I've posted videos here before so not sure what you're trying to say lol I just posted video on the ESP thread, and have posted many links to great reviews before.

Why don't you just come out and let me know what you're thinking? Yeah, I'm not great at guitar, but doesn't mean I'm joking or trolling. In fact, I am sure you're the one who is trolling, posting my videos as if there's something here to say about them doesn't exactly make you look that great. I'm still confused about why though.

Aside all that, I know you're not going to answer any of my questions, so far I've answered all yours but looks more like you're more interested in insults anyway.
