Two 16’s in parallel to get 8, then those are in series with an 8ohm to get back to 16. The lowest power speakers in parallel, the highest power speaker in series. In series?
Just grab a JCM 800, 900 B cab and grab a pair of 8 ohm JBLs, which aren't cheap, and a pair of 8 ohm M25s, new or old and load em up with the JBLs on bottom, GBs on top. Done.
Or, find a used Marshall BX or B classic cab and get the JBLs and put them on the bottom. Although, I've never seen 16 ohm JBL 120s so you'd still have to find a pair of 8 ohm GBs.
But, if you really want that 1st album tone, get the cab done and put any Marshall through it and you'll instantly hear that tone....easiest and quickest way to get it IMO. Just have to build the cab.
Interesting. I wonder if they're re cones. The ones I have, I pulled from a Fender Twin from 76.There's several 16 Ohm ones on Reverb . I can't seem to find 8 Ohms.
I think the JBLs are 103 but that's going off memory. Work best on the bottom, like a V30/GB combo.I wonder the difference in sensitivity is between the JBL's and the GBs?
And the GBs are 97 or something right?I think the JBLs are 103 but that's going off memory. Work best on the bottom, like a V30/GB combo.
I think so…or 96….And the GBs are 97 or something right?
Not very helpful, but last time I remember going down this rabbit hole I found a Weber speaker that sounded close and an offering from warehouse speakers that sounded close. Don’t remember the models it’s been way too long ago.All this JBL D120 talk has got me curious about them again. Are there any good substitutes or clones that come close to the OG? Last couple times I’ve searched the resounding answer was nay
Are you maybe thinking of the Weber California 12"?Not very helpful, but last time I remember going down this rabbit hole I found a Weber speaker that sounded close and an offering from warehouse speakers that sounded close. Don’t remember the models it’s been way too long ago.
Yep that’s the one.
Actually couldn't find it but that doesn't mean I wasn't just missing it. Some of those Warehouse speakers are upwards of $230.Yep that’s the one.
Warehouse had (has?) something too unless it’s been discontinued.
Yeah there are a lot of speakers and niche markets for fender replacements. The warehouse model will be a lot harder to find because they didn’t advertise it as a direct replacement but their wording and the response chart nailed it. This is so long ago (2007) when I was in 3 bands and considering a 4th cab setup for EVH JBLs and frustrated with $500 recones or bent frame garbage of nearly everything in the market. Back then I played stereo 5150s and a Wolfgang. I wasn’t on rig talk yet. From our forum back and forth it’s probably easier and just as accurate to go with the California Weber. I don’t remember favoring either but also then again YouTube really wasn’t a thing yet so who knows.Actually couldn't find it but that doesn't mean I wasn't just missing it. Some of those Warehouse speakers are upwards of $230.
I've seen a bunch of 16ohm JBL D120F's, but I wonder if they're like the 16 ohm labelled JBL D123's that are actually 8 ohm'sYep, it's a cool tone and you'll instantly hear that 1st album tone using your Marshall or similar. But if your cab is 16 ohm then good luck finding 16 ohm JBLs. I've never seen 1.
CrazyWhat does he mean by the 5153 is really small sounding?
They're expensive, but worth it imo. Nothing else I've tried chugs or punches like JBL D120F's or E120's. No Celestion has that kind of punchy low end or aggressive highs. A whole quad of them with my Recto's, IIC+ or coli is especially epic. They're what Metallica should've used with their c+'s lolGiven how rare and expensive the JBLs are nowadays, I’d run two greenbacks and one JBL
The 20w GB's are louder and very different than the 25 or 30w versions. The 25w versions are softer. This one '60's 20w GB I have is louder than any of my JBL's when comparedI wonder the difference in sensitivity is between the JBL's and the GBs?
The 20w GB's are louder IME compared isolated. Especially this one '60's 20w GB I have is louder and more cutting than any of my JBL's. I wondered if that's why EVH supposedly had the 20's on top/JBL's bottom; maybe to balance better in volume, but not sure. Since the heritage 20's are not as loud, I felt they worked much better on top/JBL's bottomI think the JBLs are 103 but that's going off memory. Work best on the bottom, like a V30/GB combo.
That deserves a smiley halfstackThey're expensive, but worth it imo. Nothing else I've tried chugs or punches like JBL D120F's or E120's.
