I have my thought and opinions on Eds early tone which i have posted on many others sites,im not going to get into this again, plus im very happy with my amp anyway..........
Anyone (except for Steve) with any real experience using a 100 watt Marshall is aware of this fact. Randy Rhoads used a gain modded Marshall - Ed did not.Kapo_Polenton":2llvs8nj said:That early sound is a nice cranked Plexi with boosts from GE-10 and/or MXR blue box 6 band EQ (frown) and low output PAF pickups
Maybe but still don't buy the "stock" amp theory alone or "stock" pickup alone. A super hot pickup and cranked plexi also gets similar tone to an EQ + the amp. Either way, stock plexi doesn't get you those lead lines unless you boost it, slave it, or use a hotass PU.
Pure conjecture. There is no proof that he ever used a Vox on a VH record and I highly doubt that is the case...echodrive":32wfobln said:[Yes, he used the Vox/Marshall rig on VH I and VH WACF for sure.
Dude - what do you think the GE-10 and MXR six band are? They were effectively acting as boosts.Kapo_Polenton":1af4van0 said:That early sound is a nice cranked Plexi with boosts from GE-10 and/or MXR blue box 6 band EQ (frown) and low output PAF pickups

Actually Ed used a 5 band MXR.sah5150":2383ym73 said:Dude - what do you think the GE-10 and MXR six band are? I'm not gonna get into a battle with you about what Ed did or didn't do and what I know and how, but this is just silly. I said Ed was using the GE-10 and/or MXR 6 band in fronty of the amp. They function essentially as boosts. They work quite well in taking an already cranked NMV Marshall amp into VHI gain territory. And as I said, I get this sound with a hotter pickup (the EVH pickup has a farily high output) and a boost from a Badgerplex pre. I'm quite familiar with what 100 watt NMV Marshalls feel like and sound like without a boost, thanks...echodrive":16t6zuaa said:Anyone (except for Steve) with any real experience using a 100 watt Marshall is aware of this fact.

Really? 5 band MXR, huh? Now you are showing your ignorance of Ed's early rig. I ask you to turn your attention to top right of Ed's '78 pedalboard in this pic:echodrive":20k6qcy8 said:Actually Ed used a 5 band MXR.sah5150":20k6qcy8 said:Dude - what do you think the GE-10 and MXR six band are? Um, ok.echodrive":2vmdin8z said:I only know that when I listen to VH I, that is EL84 power tube distortion!
This has absolutely nothing to do with what I was saying, which was that you have no proof whatsoever that a Vox amp was used on VHI.echodrive":2wqiodhf said:You go dude!sah5150":2wqiodhf said:Pure conjecture. If you can't hear the difference between power-tube distortion, and preamp distortion - then God Bless you! Much easier to find a satisfying sound...
