Here we go again :checkthisout: :checkthisout:
Doesn't get good until people start telling Friedman, Suhr, Thorn that they weren't there and don't know what they are talking about.
Never mind they know the guy and have /had the actual amp in question.
The Vox?

Steve :hys:

Hey I'm not gonna say how I know what I know, but believe me I know those who know and if you actually knew, well you then you just might know too. :D :D

He actually used the first Dumble ever made. HAD kept that amp a secret until he heard about this young Dutchman. EVH was allowed to borrow it to record, but then one day when the recording was done, he accidentally dialled up HAD. Dumble took great insult to this, and had it returned to California immediately where it remains hidden. EVH supposedly tried to buy it back for $13.6 million dollars, but Dumble angrily refused:

"NO! Your punishment will be to play Marshall's and whatever else you can scrape up off the floor!"

Seriously... It's true. I have talked to many close friends of Eddie, and I have brilliant ears too.
Not true. It was a Vox. There is a picture of Ed with the Vox onstage and that proves he recorded VHI and WACF with it.

Steve

That's what Vox wants you to think. They made a deal with HAD, that if he put one of their shells around the famous EVH Dumble, he would receive 97.5% of all future company profits.
He later used that money to buy Peavy, and tease EVH by building him the 5150. Apparently if he plays it until 2015, HAD will dig up that old Dumble and give it back to him.

I notice Eddie never clears any of this toan-chasing stuff up, it just goes on & on.

It's because of HADs secrecy agreement.

Geeeeez you guys live under a rock!

In all seriousness... Has anyone actually successfully cloned that famous brown sound that there seems to be so much hoopla over?

Plain and simple Ed likes gain-distortion,why would he design amps(Peavey 5150,EVH 5150 III)with so much gain.Thats why I have have always doughted the stock plexi thing.......

Well, this went from being cool and interesting to utterly pathetic pretty fast, didn't it?

Well, ok, it devolved for sure, but if by cool and interesting you mean someone coming in spouting hearsay as fact that people might possibly waste their money on, I'm sorry, but I felt compelled to comment...

Steve

Van halen 1(first album)is the brown sound i hear many clips and the majority of the clips are van halen II sounding and the rest of the van halen catalog, which is much easier to achieve then van halen 1.Some people get that mixed up.

On a second thought... EVH is pretty awesome on a piano! Never knew that... But then again I know nothing about him or the band. Great stuff!

Thanks. You probably wouldn't believe how I got that tone, but I'll drop one hint: no Vox or Dumble was involved...

That early sound is a nice cranked Plexi with boosts from GE-10 and/or MXR blue box 6 band EQ (frown) and low output PAF pickups

Maybe but still don't buy the "stock" amp theory alone or "stock" pickup alone. A super hot pickup and cranked plexi also gets similar tone to an EQ + the amp. Either way, stock plexi doesn't get you those lead lines unless you boost it, slave it, or use a hotass PU.

Dude - what do you think the GE-10 and MXR six band are? They were effectively acting as boosts.

Steve

Not that it matters this far into things but what you are saying is what I am saying... no matter WHAT was used to acheive that tone, it wasn't a stock plexi on it's own is all. (in my opinion) I'm saying all the methods we are mulling over all add gain so really, Ed was an early gain whore just like everyone else. His gain whoring just sounded really really good.. (though on live clips it sounds harsh, brittle, and scratchy i find depending on the show and period).

Yeah, we're on the same page, however, here is something interesting. These are Van Haleny style lead clips made with an unboosted, stock plexi style amp. Gainy enough sounding dontcha think?:

Lead Clip I
Lead Clip II
