Jesus! I didn't see this one coming. One of my all time favorites. I was still hoping for him to put something together and get back out there. Man this is a complete gut punch... For some reason all I can think about is that slide intro to In the Still of the Night. Thank you for the incredible music-RIP

For a while after Blue Murder he released a decent chunk of music , more than a lot of the other 80s guitar heroes ended up releasing in their careers . Four solo albums , the awesome Bad Boy Live album and I think he re-formed Thin Lizzy for a bit , but it all dried up around 2004
John put out ton of good stuff. I even loved the second Blue Murder album, it actually has more of a Lizzy vibe whereas the debut was just this big epic masterpiece. Scott and John reformed Lizzy to honor Phil and then they just kept it going for quite a few years to play the tunes, he bailed once they started morphing into Black Star Riders. Really hoping we get an official release of the tunes he was working on several years ago.

Gary, John and Lynott - three of my biggest influences all gone.

RIP hero! I'm crushed...

So sad! John was so important to my early playing. 1987 was released and I was blown away when it was released. I loved Slide it In but when I bought the cassette and listened to the first 30 seconds of Still of the Night I was just surprised. It was like the reigns were removed for this album. So much attitude, fire and swagger in his playing. Blue Murder was released and he upped the ante. Good vibes and mojo sent to his family. RIP John...

Here is a tribute I recorded to him about 8 years ago.

I recall someone somewhat recently selling his Mesa head on here or posting a link to a listing for his Mesa head. He was an OG for sure! RIP

WOW....horrible news.......You could always tell it was Sykes playing... he had a style all his own! RIP

John also played on a tune with Derek Sherinian called God of War off of Mythology; check it out.

Not as familiar with him as most of y’all but he’s the guy I always think of when the term monster player gets thrown around

So many big time industry guys hold him in such high regard

he recorded Tygers/Spellbound in 1981 when he was 21 and that album cemented him into my hall of fame and put the metal scene on notice

this face puncher when he joined Lizzy when he was 23

leveling stadiums with Whitesnake at 25

and this chart topper at 27

Wiki:
“The 1987 Whitesnake album was a critical and commercial success around the world, eventually selling over 8 million copies in the US alone and thus being certified 8× Platinum by Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in February 1995. It peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 for ten non-consecutive weeks, barred from the top spot by three different albums, including Michael Jackson's Bad, and was more weeks in the Top 5 than any other album in 1987. Whitesnake was the band's highest-charting album in the US and peaked at number eight on the UK Albums Chart.”
