Most overrated amp?

I LOVE the Killswitch As Daylight Dies tone, which is an SLO. I believe the live album mentioned before was done with the same amp, and was around the same time period.

That said, most of the classic SLO tones people talk about sound pretty bland and unflattering to me, I know some will be getting the pitchforks out but I feel like a lot of them were just kind of unique and new for their time but haven’t aged that well. It’s not really criticising the amp, it’s how they were recorded, but the downside is people still reference that stuff in hyping the amp up.

I can totally understand the overrated part too, it’s such a simple amp and circuit and for the money they command I think I’d prefer a few more bells and whistles. It’s really about the quality of components and, overall construction quality, which let’s face it, don’t have the biggest bearing on the final tone (despite making them nicer to own).

EDIT: I should add, from a historical context, the SLO is probably as important in its own era as a plexi. It really did push amplifiers into new territory from then onwards and so many amps borrow concepts from it. We probably take it for granted today but the influence is huge

The most overrated amplifier..,
-there isn’t one.
Why not?
Two words, USER ERROR.
Endgame.,

On another note,
-This one is for UserError’s runnin’round stickin’
your chest out with your CCV’S,-
(The user error is you never use them,
When’s the last time you put a few hours on it??,
Hmm?,
Prolly’ maybe 10 hours over the course of years you’ve been hoarding those machines).

I understood!

Would there be Nu Metal without SLO?

I dunno. They were using the Rectos and 5150s, which came about from the SLO

they would have used marshalls. this is why the SLO gets the overrated award, you cant honestly believe the existence of nu metal revolves around the slo?

Don’t waste your time Larry , this asshole is already balls deep in some dude right now taking out all his frustrations on the world, it’s written all over his posts.
One thing that is certainly never over rated is someone getting balls deep into a sentence…bravo sir.

1st amp that instantly came to mind from my own experience is definitely the VH4.
2nd is Germino. Everyone raves but I think they sound grainy and ill-defined compared to the amps they supposedly emulate.

i actually have a picture of one of the KSE dudes rigs from i believe ozzfest 05 with a SLO and H&K in there. i think the framus might have been before these then im not sure what they moved onto after but i dont think they did two tours with the same gear lol

killswitch1.jpg
When we opened up for them they had this rig too

the other dude had two H&K's, not sure who was playing each rig. i remember that was the first time i saw fake cabs from the back and i was bummed out lol
Lol that’s awesome. I got to see in flames the same might and they went all 5150II everything . But ya killswitch always as a great tone

You're right, it was still gonna happen. I think some of it wouldn't, and most of it wouldn't have sounded the same if there was never an SLO.
The vast majority of those tones were provided by Rectos and 5150s, rips of the SLO.
Maybe it's fair to say that Nu Metal as we know it wouldn't have been the same without the indirect impact of the SLO?
It's not like Mesa and PV were coming up with those amps without the SLO.

But the Rectos and 515x's don't sound anything like aN SLO. To me. So they def brought something new to the table beyond Soldano. And Mesa and Peavy had a high gain path so nothing to say they could not have gotten there on their own.

Yeah, again not to take anything away from the SLO, but they could have used a Jose/Lee Jackson/Langner amp as a starting point and gone from there. Of course it was the SLO and the rest is history, but I think high gain amps would have evolved one way or another.

Quite amusing how the emergence of grunge made the rectifier pivot away from that 80’s sound so early on in its lifespan.

My SLO 30 sounds pretty damn good, but for sure I prefer the crunch channel to the lead channel, and for sure I prefer my Wizard MC25 to the SLO, but’s a great backup to have

Being an owner of a #600 ish dual rectifier…. Yeah they’re overrated. Cool as a collectible thing and the loop. But I just saw one go for 5gs. Not worth it to me. I’d take a wizard mtl over it all day long.

True! Music changed hardcore. By the early-mid 90s, we had stuff like White Zombie(boosted JCM), Prong (ss Marshall), groovier Pantera (Randall RG), Korn(Recto), Fear Factory, Sevendust, Deftones...leading the way for bands like Staind, Static X, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Limp Bizkit, Machine Head and all the bands from the early 2000s. Nonpoint, Powerman 5000, Disturbed, Godsmack, Drowning Pool, Primer 55, Skinlab, Dope.....
Thankful for the 90s, and the end of the 80s bs.

Agreed, don't sound too similar to me.
I never get it when someone says they get their 5150 to sound like an SLO.
Mesa had the Marks.
Peavey had the Butcher and Ultra?
I suppose yall are right. Screw it. The SLO is overrated.

But it's not. It's badass, classic, legendary even.
