Chinese 12ax7b unmarked 8.99 tube is an awesome rock and roll tube, readily available at most tube websites. I have one in mine and its great

Forget tubes odds are that won't be a big enough change for you. You just need the "purple" channel, half way between blue and red and that's done with the gain on blue set to 2 o'clock or so then hit it with an OD pedal (I found the way huge green rhino works best of the ones I tried since you can dial in the bass and mids to taste with it) and you get the "purple" channel which is nearly as mean as red but a bit less compressed with more mids like the blue channel.

Yeppers. Understand. I use a boost on my 100 watt for the blue channel to get me where I want. Had a buddy who did the mod to his and he digs it. I just can't bring myself to do it so I boost it instead.

I modded mine to Stealth and it kills. I get the perfect amount of gain for my music on channel 2 dialed to 12:00. Theres some nice added girth to that channel now too.

I was working on a commercial today and had 2 delays and 2 verbs in the loop noticed 5 volume drops, down and up I flipped it into standby flipped it back out of standby and it seems to be noisier than usual. I usually don't have to run my NS-2 but had to in order to finish. Turned the NS-2 off and it seems really noisy when I turn the effects loop on. Anybody had this issue? I looked at the 50 watt head tube diagram and cant determine witch tube is the effects loop tube.

Unlike the 100w, the 50w does not have a tube driven loop but is solid state.

Your problem does sound like a tube issue though.

Well I was on channel 3 when it happened. By the tube diagram it could be V1 thru V4. But Channel 3 now has feedback like crazy so it has to be a tube. Would a power tube do that or just preamp?

It is more than likely V2 V3 or V4 because channel 1 and 2 have no real issues. I will try the tap test to see if 1 went microphonic. I guess I get a chance to see how my lucky Chinese 12ax7b's do in those slots. judging by most peoples comments it probably wont be a drastic difference. I would like a little less compression I feel there is a Mid compression that I a not digging to much, by that I mean more note clarity when playing chords.

Found it V2! changing V2 to a Tong-Sol cleaned just a bit of lower mids up, So it does change the tone ever so slightly I suspect that changing all 3, V2, V3, V4 will probably make a bit of difference to my ears. Also the 12AX7's in there are unmarked.

Thanks nevusofota I appreciate the help. I went ahead and retubed channel 3 all Tung-Sol and it made quite a bit of difference cleaner sounding for sure.

good you got it resolved.
about a year ago i replaced all my preamp tubes with tung sol. seems to work great

did you ever find out what were the small issues that needed to be changed? i know there was the tracers that need to be snipped, a couple of jumpers, also a 22uf 35v cap on r37. r26 snipped, r25=10k, but h kaplan stated 'almost there but still a couple of small issues?'
just want to know if you got those also.

i just copped a 50 watt from craig's list for 700.00 yesterday.
I am on a serious honeymoon right now and the champagne is flowing!
:D
I have not stopped playing and my fingers are sore!

I am using an old first issue rg550 with an OG Bill Lawrence blade in the bridge and jb in the neck as well as a tricked out mexican strat with a set of SRV's in it.

The strat sounds thicker and fatter/warmer as it always does but is not as easy to play as the wizard neck......

I am running it thru a home made open back 2 x 12 cabinet that i swap speakers in and out of depending on my mood.

Right now I have 2 celestion 75's in it and it sounds amazing
I want to try eminence and scumbacks next,

I will be getting a 4 x 12 of some sort or an EVH 2 x 12 soon

This is the first real tube head I have owned and I am overwhelmed by how much better my playing sounds and translates.

I was using rack preamps [engl.mesa,marshall.ada]for the last 20 years thru mosvalve power amps and I am kicking myself in the ass for not having bought an all tube head sooner.

The difference is waaaaay huge!

The attack and note speed is so fast, the dynamics are incredible when you pick lighter or roll off the volume knob.
The vocal/vowel-ish tone is what I have been looking for.

This amp can cover a lot of ground with proper tweekage,

Curious to throw pedals at it !
And haven't even played effects thru the loop yet.

I am debating an fja or a voodoo mod since i am on the east coast and both guys are a 3 and half hour drive from me.

I would like to get rid of the hiss [which is minor and I am nitpicking]
tighten the bass up a bit and boost the sweep of the mids to a deeper level for holdsworth/chris poland horn/violin legato action

the volume jump is a non issue for me but i am also debating this mod as well if it's going to jerry or trace

i am worried that any mods will fuck with the inherent sound of this amp which I am totally in love with,

I also have to mention that I feel lucky and blessed that I live in a time when such a sick amp is easily available for such a low price.

it makes me wonder how much better a name brand boutique hi gain head [friedman/fuchs/riverea.fryette/henning/cameron etc] is than the mojo this amp has.

I am also wondering how this bad boy will sound with a fractal effects unit in the loop and or an axe efx going thru the green channel.

which then makes me wonder if it can be modded to just be a power section for an axe efx

BALLS DELUXE!

I just ordered the Fractal FX8 yesterday so I'll let you know how it sounds with my EVH's hopefully late next week. I've never run my Axe-Fx through any of my EVH's but my buddy runs his Stealth in 4 cable with his and it sounds great. All the rack gear I've used with the EVH sounds phenomenal. G-Force, G-Major and currently a G-System.
