Thinking of going low gain

Or you do what I just did and get one of these... 3rd Power Clean Sink V1. This amp is ridiculous and can be blended from American / Fender > to VOX AC30, or dialed to one or the other. I scored a rarity though as this one is 40 watts EL34 vs 20 watts 6V6. this will see gig use soon and no issues keeping up with a loud drummer. I haven't played the MKII version.

I'll second the Top Hat thing though, owned a few different versions, killer amps. There's a good deal on one locally here but after a week or so with the Clean Sink I'm sticking with this. I've also got a 3rd Power Wooly Coats Spanky MKII that I'll probably need to sell soon to cover this one, but won't be disappointed to keep it too, phenom hot rodded Princeton type rig....

Yeah. I know a lot of people poke fun at the owner. I don't really give a shit one way or another about a person's business if it doesn't affect me, but the amps sound fucking awesome. They are doing some badass work

Yes but the pedals give back T, sorta like artificial testosterone replacement therapy for these amps

A loud clean Hiwatt or better yet Alessandro DAZZ 200w is certainly though not a low T sound at all in my book
Makes no sense if his is goal is low T...your man card is gonna take a hit for this Sam. If you would have took a stand for quilting instead it would have been understandable but friends don't let friends on RT go low gain.

Just cause someone mentions going low gain doesn't mean they are taking a stand for Quilters. I am lower gain but I hate those SS hunks of decroded crap. I think we are all toobs and boobs guys here. Well, most of us anyways.

My favorite clean amps I've played have been the Alessandro DAZZ, 1964 Fender Vibroverb, early '60's Vox AC30 Top Boost, Jamison J30, Bogner Caveman and 1969 Marshall Plexi Tremolo 50. Some of these amps though (particularly the Fender) I don't like much as pedal platforms or when it gets overdriven on its own. Actually of those amps none of them are my favorite pedal platforms, but those others do great overdrive on their own

My favorites as pedal platforms have been the 1972 Marshall Superlead 100 (depends partly on what pedals) and Hiwatts, but I don't like their actual clean tones as they lack to me beauty or lushness in tone. They're more about power and punch. For affordable options those '60's Ampeg's are hard to rival, especially the Gemini's, but not imo great pedal platforms. Garnet's are also great for the price. The Garnet Revolution III I had was in a similar ball park to Black faces imo

I always enjoyed the clean of my traditional strat into 6550 loaded RI plexi. The plexi's overdrive always overshadows the cleans. Big, round, tight, 3-D, with a nice 4x12 of greenbacks giving that warmth. It was a good pedal platform and the EQ on the RI was powerful and very sensitive to small changes. You could play anything from rock to blues to jazz and metal with one using the right pedals or no pedals at all if so desired. I used an 808 copy for many years and played classic rock and blues stuff. Compared to a Twin it's a bit richer and thicker when clean but lacks some of the sparkle and crispness of the Fender.

My '69 Plexi has EL34's, but I'd probably love its cleans too with 6550's. I don't love all plexi's I've tried for cleans, but this one has it to the point where I'd typically choose it over my preferred blackfaces. Pre-rola Greenbacks are of course a great classic sound with these amps, but for cleans in particular my favorites would be with it my Altec 417B's for warmth, woodiness or '50's Roger Charles/Cletrons if I wanted more glassiness, sparkle or high end detail

It can be a good pedal platform, maybe it's because it's 50w, but just have had better results using my 100w 1972 Superlead as a pedal platform IME. I haven't found for my taste a truly convincing metal sound with them, but I may be more picky there since it's one of my main styles, but no doubt for classic rock and blues it's one of the very best imo. In general you're absolutely right that the Twin and other blackfaces like my Vibroverb get more crisp, sparkly and glassy, but this one to my surprise can get pretty damn close when compared for that quality while also being richer and thicker like you said. Not the case with the other plexi's I had in the past or tried, but they had their own strengths relative to this current one. I was actually gonna list my '64 Vibroverb for sale since getting this '69, but decided to still hold on to it. Getting almost there isn't enough to evict it for me

This is how it's done Sam. Have a peaceful night quilting. Any more soy gets into your diet and it's game over bro.
There's room for both. Sorta like in Metallica their dainty, "soy" clean sections made the contrast to the high gain sections sound that much heavier. I guess when I play my cleans or classical I'm Samantha

That vibroverb will probably sell for a pretty serious hunk of cash one day. They aren't cheap now. I'd be hanging on to that for another ten or twenty years.

100%. The amps are absolutely fucking ridiculous, built bombproof and look badass in person. My little chocolate brown Wooly Coats MKII is a gem as well. I would highly highly encourage looking into them for the sounds you're going for...

You want a pedal platform, so I think your options are a lot more diverse than you think.

Look into brands like Bad Cat, Cornford and Divided by 13.

Also, don't forget Morgan Amps, with an AC20 or AC30 likely to be good choices for your application.
