Duncan Distortion for VH1 tone ?

I ordered a new 1300 and a 1400 in black to try also, they’re cheap enough, and one of my double creams is separating in the center, need to figure that out. IMO, the sharp spike at 1K is vital for VH1, so the GEQ has to be there and so is the reverb, which seems to have been proven to be a bright reflective room at Sunset Sound, not an EMT plate.

To my ears the 1977 show is all Mighty Mite at least in Franky and the 1979 tour at least in Osaka sounds more like a PAF or slightly overwound PAF because it is warmer and the attack is slightly softer, it still has some nice crunchy raunch to it but it doesn't have as much of that obscene ratty, fuzzy like, crunch that the 1977 recording does. I would say for the Osaka show it could be any PAF type from slightly overwound to the early Duncan JB with the coil mismatch and in the 13-14K resistance range as I think Ed may have been trying to get away from using the MXR or Boss EQ pedals to tighten things up and boost for solos.

Remember the two big Colorsound metal footswitches on Ed's board were looper pedals for the MXR 6 band and the Echoplexes according to Robin L and that makes a hell of alot of sense because at times it's kind of obvious Ed has more gain and punch for the solos even live.
The Osaka show he is most likely using the Bee which had a what appeared to be a Super Distortion. Ed said interviews he put a different magnet in it but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was bs

I dunno, I'm strictly listening to the pickup. Here's another 78 show later in the tour from the Selland Arena September 1978.
It sounnds like the Mighty Mite to me similar to the 1977 album release party.

Here's a 1979 show from the same arena reocrded by the same guy.

the GEQ has to be there

I scored one off Reverb a couple years ago.

Dated 1979 on the power cord.

Looks like NOS.

Yeah, I got one from Japan and changed the taps on the power transformer to the correct ones for US voltage, works great. The MXR 10 band is good too, once you convert to DC only use and re-cap it etc.

I’m leaning towards the Jalen FW in an SG type guitar. I figure it’ll get close to early VH and beyond.

I think the lower output pickups are generally more accurate but that guitar already has one and wanna try something a little hotter.

That sounds great . What rig are you playing that thru ? 500k vol pot ?
Yes. Bourne's low friction.

EchoPlex3 preamp pedal => JCM-800 with two EH-6CA7's pulled, variac'ed down to 105VAC => greenbacks mic'ed w SM57

In DAW : API-550 (set flat), Pultec EQP-1A, Pultec MEQ-5, UA-1176 compressor.

I was sold on the Jalen FW after I heard it in Jim Gaustad's video's .

Excellent…that sounds great

You think the FW is good for bouncy type palm muting too? Seems real reactive in that clip. Probably also cleans up well for single channel amp playing.
It's a real good pickup for the stuff I like to play.

Cleans up good, when you dial it back. (y)

Judging by the grind, I imagine the hotter coil is the screw coil?

Yes.

I have all my asymmetric wind PU's wound that way, because the vibrating string energy is at it's lowest point at the bridge (and nut).

Makes sense to place the hotter coil at the bridge.

When I spoke to Jim Gaustad, he gave me these specs, and using Google search with these specs, I stumbled upon the Darth Phineas site and learned the source was (purportedly) an example of a proto-JB from circa 1974. (I know you and I have discussed this before) (y)
