Just out of sheer curiosity, what would be your favorite 10 games ever?

Hard to pick 10, so here's as close as I can easily get:

EarthBound
Donkey Kong Country 3
Zelda: A Link To The Past
Super Metroid
Starcraft
Unreal Tournament/UT2k4 (sort of cheating, but it depends)
Asheron's Call, at least for the first year or two on the PVP server
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Resident Evil 1 (mostly the GC one, it's actually better)
Maybe Final Fantasy 8, though I haven't played that in years. I want to play it again, but I don't have the time. I remember it took me 80 hours to beat it once lol.

Some other runner ups that I have played the crap out of and still love, but wouldn't be so likely to spend much time with today:

Command & Conquer Generals
all the old Dooms
Tyrian 2000
One Must Fall
Gradius III
random Street Fighter IIs
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Goldeneye 64
Twisted Metal 2
Gran Turismo
Vigilante 8 1 and 2
Final Fantasy Tactics and the GBA one
Castlevania Circle of The Moon

I never had Symphony of The Night. My friend got it for 360, and I started playing it a little, though.

Haha I loved the original Pokemon when it came out, too. Those got lame, though.

Surprised to see FF8 on your list. That's my second favorite game behind FF7. You need to play SOTN, it's ridiculous. :worship:

I've played it, I just didn't get far into it. I guess it's supposed to be farkin huge, and that's why it's good.

I love really long games that keep things moving all the way through, which is why I mentioned FF8. FF7 is great, too, but it's not as long, and people probably spoiled it all for me. I remember I made sure to get FF8 the day it came out, though, 9/9/99 haha, and I did every little thing in it and saw it all for myself before anyone could screw it up for me.

Parasite Eve is another one of those Square PS1 RPGs that can keep you busy for a damn long time. The game itself isn't very long, but it does a cool thing where the game gets harder and unlocks another really long part when you beat it, and you can just keep beating it and making it harder and harder, and you get to keep one weapon and armor item each time, and keep improving them.

They also did Super Mario RPG for SNES, which was a really original and great game. I haven't been able to make it all the way through it in years, though. It starts off too slow, and I always just want to get to the later parts and give up. The Paper Mario and GBA/DS knock offs don't compare at all. That's one place where Nintendo doesn't do so hot with their own franchise.

games are only a small part of it...people can surf the net, check news, forecasts, exercise, play games...its a very ambitious goal that Nintendo has, but IMO it is working and is filling a niche that Sony and Microsoft arent.

People can already do that with the PS3. It has a built-in browser and is Linux-ready if you're really ambitious. You can even exercise with DDR matts if that's your thing.

but Nintendo decided to go with a different niche...older people, women, and casual gamers more than likely are not gonna plop 400-600 on a game system, but 250 for a Wii is just right. THATS where the difference is...not that the PS3 can also do these things, albeit in different ways (WiiFit is strictly exercise...thats going to appeal to a lot of people, where as DDR doesnt).

theres a big difference in the people that the companies are shooting for...Nintendo decided not to compete head-on with Sony and Microsoft, and its paying off for them in a big way.

I got my copy of FF8 on 9/8/99. :D

The place where I had it reserved called me at around 7 at night and said I could come pick it up, so I rushed out to get it and played it all night. Then I stayed home from school the next day because I got the Dreamcast then. :D

That's cheating. :gethim:

I remember that it took me so long to finish it, because I was obsessed with the card game, and tried to get ALL of the cards. But I somehow missed like two of them, and at the end of the game, when you get stuck at the 4th disc and you can barely go anywhere, the only guy that would still play you, who was then supposed to have every card you missed, didn't have any of them. But I still card modded all the good ones and pwned the Omega Weapon.

Has anyone played Star Ocean for PS1? My friends swear it's the best super long RPG, ever. They forced me to play it a little, but I still don't know much about it. Maybe someday, I'll borrow it and get around to it. I was poor and missed out on a lot of PS1 games.

I got Star Ocean 2 for PSX. It's a wonderful game that is quite long. The last dungeon is basically impossible. Dude, just download the ISOs on Demonoid or something. They're all there.

Do you mean Star Ocean: Second Story? I think Star Ocean 2 was for PS2, and it kind of sucked.

Star Ocean 2 = Star Ocean: The Second Story. The original Star Ocean 1 was for SNES.

Haha, I never got too into the card game, but it was pretty fun. It took me about 60 hours to beat it the first time through. The longest game I've played so far is Xenogears or FF12. They both took me around 95 hours, and I still didn't get everything in FF12. Star Ocean 1 is for SNES and was never released in the US. You can download a subtitled version though. But yeah, your friend is very right. Star Ocean 2 for PS1 is amazing. Very long and very awesome. One of my favorite RPG's ever. Star Ocean 3 for PS2 is great as well, although not good as 2. I just picked up Rogue Galaxy for PS2 and I gotta say, it's absolutely incredible. I'm about 25 hours in and it's already one of my favorite games ever. It's around 100 hours long too from what my friend tells me.

OAS: Your top 10 list is very similar to mine. Needs more Mega Man

To all: Yes, the Wii is a console with some potential but Nintendo has stated in the past that they are giving the finger to its loyal fans by making the Wii seem like a far more accessible console to non-gamers. And as an FYI, I consider a gamer not some random fuckwad who just buys an Xbox 360 and Halo 3. We're talking somebody with experience here, dates back to the days of the 16bit era at least. I fucking hate people who claim they're gamers when the games they play is just Counter-Strike and Halo.

Also, many people don't understand but because of the way technology progresses, the PC will always be the cutting edge. The X360 was outdone in fillrate (Games purely rely on fillrate still since all the effects that are being done are texture based) within months of being released. The only thing the R500 based core it has going for itself is the Unified Shader Architecture which they finally incorporated into DX10 which is better than having separate shader pipelines for pixel and vertex shaders. Of course, the underlying issue is cost. Also, in my mind - if you're willing to dump $500CAD on a console, you can build a PC that can run most games quite easily for a little more and also, consider the fact that you do get more out of a new PC than a new console. Consoles are a cheap and petty fix these days. I mean some games play better on consoles and vice versa. Anybody who bought the PS1 port of Red Alert is a tool. I tried playing a recent iteration of Mega Man on the PC (Capcom should have ended the X series at X5) and it was a good game but it plays so much better on a console. I didn't have a PS2 then so yeah. Native binary.

Next thing, I grew up pretty much with NES and SNES controllers in my hand. Yeah, consoles are awesome and all but whoever says PC gaming is dead has to be the most oblivious fuckwad that think he's knowledgeable about this stuff. The most challenging games are on the PC and are played best. Those would be RTSes. There's a reason why Command and Conquer 3 for the X360 doesn't sell as well as its superior PC counterpart. There's also a reason why first person shooters are also insanely better than on the console. I dislike Halo for the fact that it's made to be easy to aim. I remember first picking up the game, grabbing the assault rifle and thinking, "what the fuck - that's a bigass crosshair".

I really should get around to playing some of the PS1 RPGs mentioned. I missed out on the Sony collection of games. I had (and still do) have my SNES and was happy with it. Skipped the PS1 and two. Got the Cube when it came out and Metroid Prime was pretty awesome but the Cube didn't live up to the damn expectations I had. Recently, I just got a hold on a "broken" PS2 but it was fine. OAS and Code, I wouldn't mind hearing some suggestions on some games. I know of the well known stuff but I dig more obscure, in depth games that you can get hooked on. I just got in the mail my Devil May Cry 5th Anniversary collection, the second sucks ass - I know but still. The first is awesome and supposedly the third is too.

I find that the "Americanization" of gaming has caused the games to get blander and I tend to stick towards the Japanese games which focus on more obscure and innovative things. Of course, there are some good North American developers but I find a large portion of the innovation comes from the other side of the globe.

I almost cheated and put the Megaman collection thingy in, because I do like that, but that's like 10 games haha. I cheated enough as it was.

Both, I've nagged Mark a bit on the subject. :D
But yeah, the general price of games on the 'bay for PS1 and PS2 games is quite cheap though.

OAS: You should have done it anyways. It wouldn't matter to me considering the crap job Capcom got porting them.

Aside from things like that, what drives me nuts the most about Halo is how slow it is. It's dumbed down to make it work on a console. When I lived at school and played it with people, I had to crank the sensitivity way, way up on the controller, but you still just move too freaking slow for me to be able to stand it, and I could swear there's even a delay on some of the weapons and actions after you press the button.

You can turn the speed up to like 300% in Halo 3, but it's completely retarded. You literally just run faster. I don't think vehicles even move faster. And it's still pretty much the run speed of Unreal Tournament, but without the rate of fire.

The problem is, we don't get much of that anymore, even though we didn't get it all to begin with. I've never understood that. I could maybe understand back in the day, when games were on cartridges and the industry was nowhere near as developed as it is today. But how much of a risk really is it to print up some DVDs of a great game that did well elsewhere in the world?

Which is why I download and play various Japanese games. However, the market is obviously different. Take the game Lair. That game was considered to be awful here in the US, yet it got rave reviews over in Japan. Also, most people don't know this, but a huge majority of Japanese games are text-based games. Basically, it's like an interactive book reading thing. There are a few options you can choose, and a few scenes you can see, but 90% of the games are just reading with music playing in the background and a still photo in front of you.

The Megaman Legends games were some others I unfortunately missed. They sounded cool, but oh well. Isn't there a newer one that is sort of like those?

Tekken 3 was fun, except if you played against someone using Eddie Gordo, that just pressed every button at once, turning him into an unstoppable human flail of death. All the new ones seem like the same thing. I'm not sure how they can really do that game any better.

I never finished FF9. I liked how it kind of went back to the old school train of thought, but it didn't really have me sucked in.

Breath of Fire 3 seemed really fun, but I only rented it, didn't get far, and then wasn't ever able to buy that one, either. They started releasing those games for GBA, but I don't think they ever made it to 3.

Okami is an interesting and very different game. The hilariously bizarre voices were enough to get my attention, but the game itself seemed pretty cool, although I didn't get to see much of it.

Intramasting. I was not aware of this.

I'm a huge Tekken fan. There are ways around Eddie, trust me. ;) I use Hwoarang as my main character.

Here's an example of the text-based games I was referring to:

Those are the biggest genre of games in Japan. People go crazy over them for some reason. Go to Akihabara (electronics capital of the world), and you'll see shit tons of them lying everywhere for you to buy at outrageous prices. When I mean outrageous, I mean $60+ for some.
