Stunned to read that there’s now a major focus on deterring looters. First I heard of this was in a short clip from Bonamassa, but it’s been reported more generally here in the UK. Can’t imagine the level of low life you need to be to want to loot homes that had to be abandoned in a situation like this….

Unfortunately there's always some who do this.
You also have to watch on the back end too. Scummy contractors will swoop in to take advantage and steal people's insurance money when they're trying to rebuild their lives.

There’s an open border to ‘help’ with this.

This... if they're lucky enough to have fire insurance. State farm canceled fire insurance in the same area a few months back. Fucking scumbags.

I live in CA and don't know anyone who has bought a home in the last 5 years (or more) that's been able to get fire insurance. It's not irresponsibility, you can't get it if you want it. Only people that have it have been grandfathered in for years or don't live in high risk fire zones. Try getting earthquake insurance or some kind of coverage for landslides too. Insurance companies only insure you here for shit that will never happen.

Try getting a homeowners policy in Fla. Not happening.

Lots of insurers did that in CA because they realized many regions are a matchbox when programs for controlled forest area burns & removal of foilage/shruberry were stopped &/or defunded because of stupid laws imposed by the CA politicians in power. IIRC. there's not even a logging/lumber industry within CA. Also, Gov Newsom had at least 4 dams destroyed so that the water from rainfall & snow melt just ran off into the ocean rather having a water source & hydroelectric power for communities. Newsom & his lackeys had these laws imposed to "save" some ecosystem obscure species' instead of working for the people of the state.

It's pretty much the same if you live anywhere on the gulf coast.
My current provider pissed me off by saying hail damage was normal wear & tear and wouldn't cover the claim. I started shopping around and got the same response from every company. "We're currently not offering new policies in your area."

Yes, yes, everything's terrible here. Nothing good happening in California. Woe is us. All 39 million of us want to leave or commit hari-kiri.

Please.

The State has its own fire insurance division because of some insurers backing out of insuring some areas due to fire dangers.

A friend of mine owns a logging company here in California. It's hard for the smaller logging firms but that's largely due to big firms trying to underbid the big logging jobs here.

i worked for years at my towns conservation dept here in CT, not exactly a big problem area for wildfires but still can get dry enough every so often in the summer for problems, we spent months one year clearing out all our areas of dead wood because lightning had struck a tree and started some fires that came dangerously close to a bunch of houses. its a little bit shocking to me reading and hearing some of the things im seeing regarding all this

Did you ever unclog beaver dams in culverts?

I live in Vermont, and the lead singer of my bands for over 20 years was a National Crew Chief for the emergency wildfire crews. Every year he headed to Montana, Oregon, California, etc to work these huge fires and train all kinds of people in what to do. He made large amounts of cash each time, and he survived, but I never would've been able to do that. . . I was always stuck with calling the clubowners canceling each time he left!

I hope @Fusionbear is OK.. He hasn't posted since Wednesday and the fire was just a few streets away. He didn't seem too worried by his posts but I would've been!
Yeah that's kinda concerning and have been wondering the same thing since seeing his pic....

It would be interesting to know how banks allowed insurers to cancel policies on homes and properties with current mortgages. I remember there were multiple fires when I was visiting a friend outside San Francisco in 2014 and the state almost seems even less prepared ten years later.

I was watching footage of buildings ablaze everywhere and as the news truck passed one building that was not on fire with multiple firetrucks parked around it spraying it down it became apparent that this was a firestation.

Sucks all around but those with cancelled insurance policies are now double fooked..................

Seems firefighting budgets were cut and unused equipment given to Ukraine in 2022 regardless of water access.

was curious and checked out those links. The first just tells you about private insurance, and says the fair act will pay out substantially less "if" you quality.

The second has been taken down?

The third is fact checking Trump, saying there was no water shortage and no legislation that blocked the supply of water. The entire country watched firefighters unable to fight fires because there was no water in the hydrants. We've all seen the videos of Newsome taking up the fight for "Smelt" at this point. From the outside, it looks like the most beautiful state in the country, has been literally run into the ground by incompetent leadership.
