The consensus answer is: nothing.
The only amp that I saw being suggested as remotely comparable was a Wizard (and maybe the "NATAS" amp that's coming out in a few weeks).
I owned a Cobra as well as 3 Cameron modded amps. Never had or heard a CCV in person or a Cornford.prplhz":3tahn94m said:You guys need to stop being pussies and just get Cobras.

So does the Cobra even belong in this thread at all or no?

You know when it's all said and done... I bet you and I like a similar tone... I heard you mention "Even Order Harmonics" That is what I love also... Even with my Tube Hi-Fi Amp.
Even Order Harmonics, and Distortion is Warm, and Rich. Odd Order is Harsh and Brittle. This is why I favor my Herbert the least of my Amps... It has some odd order, and is
Slightly Harsh.
I wonder if you would like my Vintage 79' Marshall JMP Jose with Mercury Magnetics Trannies?
What do you think of this?

Yes! Hold-on to that one for sure! I'd use that for playing Michael Schenker - Randy Rhoads numbers especially.![]()
I've cut way back on the amount of gain I'm using these days. At some point I went back to my earlier influences. Why, I don't know? In the 80's I was so into Randy's playing man! It was so over-the-top compared to everything else at the time. After that came an avalanche of copycat players - but none of them "hit the mark" like Randy.![]()
I agree with with you on the Diezel thing. I went to Steve Henderlong's (39 Stripes) place to pick up a guitar. He had a V4 I think it was? He asked me to play out of it, just to see what I though of it? I told him it had a certain harshness to it. I didn't want to "rag" his amp - but I recognized it as odd-order harmonics creeping through. We plugged-in 2 other cabs, but the harshness remained. He goes through a ton of gear man! His two "main-stay" amps are his Carol-Ann 100 watt OD2, and a Cornford MKII. He's also using a VHT preamp I think? I had never heard a Cornford until he let me hear the pre-production release of "Mustard Seed" from their latest album. I said; "Shit! What are you using man? That's a great tone!" He said it was a Cornford MKII.
That's a great sounding Marshall you have there. Anyone who knows how to play would be proud to play out of that amp IMO. George Lynch would love the shit out of that!![]()

Thanks...
Ok I'm starting to figure you out![]()
And I agree you take the Global knob, and tilt it towards a little brighter, and this thing sounds Like MSG for sure, think Armed And Ready!
Thing is... The Cameron is like this but Super Charged with Over the top Gain, Saturation. What I mean by Like is... The HERBERT has Gain out the Wazzoo... But The CCV is ***ORGANIC*** Even Order while the Herbie sounds more ??? I don't want to say Fake... But sounds more Transistor?? Or Electric maybe?
The CCV takes that Organic Vibe, and and Adds... Bottom End tight Punch... With just the right amount of Swirling Grind. A Visceral FEEL IT type of sound that appeals to your Primordial senses...
See I wish you could hear my CCV set up the way I like with my Cab, Speakers, Tubes, And Bias! I think you would have a new favorite! I really do!

Ok--I've heard the Cornford and for me it lacked some "tightness" in the overdrive. Maybe I heard a bad one but the overdrive just sounded very unfocused and grainy. Weird.
I've watched some clips of the CCV and the tone coming out of that thing is something wonderful. However, in doing some research on the 'net there seems to be a LOT of press that says staple your nut sack to your face (thanks--LOVE that one!) before doing business with Cameron. Anybody had any different experiences. It seems to me in listening to clips that with some proper EQ the Splawn Nitro could get Cameron tones.
I have a Boogie Mark V and the tone doesn't even come close to what I've heard of the CCV.
I also have:
Hughes & Kettner TriAmp MK II
Diezel VH4
Hughes & Kettner Trilogy
Hughes & Kettner Switchblade
Marshall JVM410H
Marshall DSL100MLB
The tone that I have that I'd rate #2 compared to the CCV is my Marshall 1974X dimed, but I don't think that can be considered "comparable" -- totally different beast, but just as juicy. BTW--loved the "sonic pussy-juice" comment, whoever made it. Priceless.
Lovin' the forum so far! Lots of experience here and people willing to (heatedly) share.
Cheers,
Race
